I am a NYS certified Music teacher who has been teaching in the school system for over 20 years.

I hold both my BM and MA degree in Music Education, and Jazz guitar was my major instrument in college. My focus is to teach techniques, skills and concepts for life-long learning.

I am currently available to teach Guitar, Music Theory and Beginner Piano.

Aside from teaching private guitar and piano lessons and teaching General music and Chorus in school, I perform and accompany singers as a guitarist in churches on Long Island.

For your added security, I've been VIRTUS trained with the Catholic Diocese of Rockville Centre and fingerprinted with the NYS Education department.

My system of guitar training includes:

* Right hand and Left hand technical exercises geared towards developing coordination and confidence;

work in music reading of standard music notation and TAB;

* Fretboard navigation, pick-control and fingerstyle techniques.

* Song repertoire knowledge and memorization

*Solo guitar interpretation of popular songs as well as accompaniment styles appropriate for backing your or another's voice;
*Ear-training and Music theory is incorporated into each lesson.

NYSSMA preparation is available for both Classical and Jazz auditions.

Piano lessons are available with concentration in proper hand mechanics and technique, theory, ear-training and music reading. NYSSMA preparation up through level 4 is available.

*** Lesson Details ***
My guitar lessons follow a structured format. I begin with technical exercises for both the picking/strumming hand and the fretting hand, leading to good sound production. As students learn to achieve well-balanced tones, they learn to apply that to the written page using standard music notation and the TAB system. From single notes, students learn to build harmony, (chords), from 2 notes, to 3, and thereafter, 4. Song repertoire is built from a variety of sources including published method books. Memorization of song repertoire is stressed.

After the student has learned the notes and scales in the first position as well as the associated chords, he/she can learn songs of his/her choosing from the Folk, Pop, Classical and Jazz repertoire that is appropriate to his/her current level.

Piano method books used include the Dozen-A-Day and Hanon technique exercises as well as the Schaum and Michael Aaron method book series'.

NYSSMA training/coaching is available for both piano and guitar with suitable training beginning a least a year before the NYSSMA audition is to take place.

The Guitar student should have a good quality guitar, (steel strings, nylon strings, or steel-string electric) professionally set-up with light-gauged strings (for the beginners), a strap, a music stand, and time and space in the home in order to encourage a daily routine of practice.

The Piano student should have daily access to a piano or keyboard instrument with weighted keys in order to be able to practice lesson material daily.

For young students, a practice chart is given where a student is to mark his/her practice time in order for progress to be made.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have a dedicated room in my home that is set up for private practice and teaching. It has an electronic piano, folding chairs, a music stand and guitar amplifiers and cables.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I bring an acoustic guitar with me to all out-going lessons so that I can play along with the student and demonstrate techniques as necessary. I bring extra blank sheets of music writing paper, fret board diagrams, and study sheets, as well as extra copies of the books I use most frequently. I can purchase books/materials for the student, with the student's or parent/guardian's reimbursement, or the student may purchase materials on their own.

My name is Jennifer. I got my degree in vocal performance and minored in Jazz. I began voice lessons myself when I was eight. I am a mezzo soprano, and can teach both female and male voices. I have performed in several opera productions including but not limited to The Marriage of Figaro, Dido and Aeneus, Tenderland, and Hand of Bridge. I have worked and performed in masterworks by Brahms, Chopin, Mozart to name a few. I studied in French, English, Spanish, Italian, and German. I studied diction, ear training, piano, music history, pedagogy, and music theory. I have also performed with artists such as New York Voices, Bobby Mcferrin and Kurt Elling. I was blessed with many learning opportunities to grow in my passion and I would love to pass that knowledge and passion to anyone who wants to learn.

*** Lesson Details ***
Lessons are de
signed around the needs of each student. The first lessons is always spent testing range, knowledge and abilities already known by the student. Then the student weighs in on what kind of music they would like to learn and what they hope to gain from the lessons. Theory and ear training are incorporated into the lessons. We work on breathing, technique and style. Generally we start with English or Italian. We work on vocal performance from a classical standpoint but Jazz and Broadway can also be taught if desired by the student. Scales and exercises are given each week to be worked on until the next lesson. A recording device is encouraged if the student cannot play the piano. Also, a voice note book to take notes during the lesson to be used during practice during the week.

*** Lesson Details ***
Each lessons builds upon the previous. The first half of the
lesson is a review of material the student has covered; a "warm up"
The second half of the lesson is for learning a new song or guitar solo as well as chord theory (learning and understanding new songs / songwriting) and scale theory (learning and understanding how melodies and solos fit over chord progressions).
I recommend setting a baseline intention of practicing 15 minutes a day. If you stick to that every day you will improve on the guitar and be playing music very soon!

I started playing music around the Kansas City area twenty five years ago. I graduated from The University of Southern California with a degree in studio/jazz guitar (cum laude). While at USC, I received a merit scholarship and an award for professional leadership and service within her department. I also graduated with honors from Musicians Institute (GIT), of Hollywood, CA.

I have toured the U.S. and Canada playing venues such as The Portland Rose Festival, The Playboy Jazz Festival, The Santa Monica Twilight Concert Series, Irvine Lake Blues Festival,The Burnaby British Columbia Blues Festival and the Long Beach Blues Festival. I incorporate a tailored curriculum to help people achieve their personal goals. Learning music is not a "one-size fits all" proposition. I can show you the songs that you want to play. I can also teach you music theory, technique, improvisation, reading and more. I adjust your course of study according to your areas of interest. If you are dying to learn a Led Zeppelin tune, or are planning on auditioning for a college level jazz guitar program, I can help you achieve these goals. I have taught hundreds of beginners along side more advanced students. My students have gone one to study music at GIT, Fullerton College, Pasadena City College, Berklee, Cal State LA, and USC.

Most of all, I am extremely patient. The ability to playing a musical instrument is measure on a calendar, not on a watch. I often work at a slow, systematic pace. I am generally very laid-back. On the other hand, if you learn very quickly, I can readily show you the skills you need to meet your goal. I have fast-tracked many individuals that were seeking admittance to an academic program.

My teaching studio is computer equipped. This allows me to incorporate computer software that enhances learning. One such program, Band in a Box, generates accompaniment for students so that they can work on their soloing skills. Another program can slow recorded music down so that the student can practice slowly with it. Also, I often give out play-along practice CDs for improved learning.

The aspect of performance is often not addressed by many. I am able to work with my guitar students while accompanying by performing live bass or drum parts, or work with bass students while playing the guitar or drum parts. This allows the student to understand his or her roll in an live band.

After a few classes with Kimberly I wrote review which went like this “I have been taking lessons from Kimberly for the last few weeks. As a comparison, I have taken lessons a number of times in the distant past. Kimberly is by far the very best guitar instructor I have had. Kimberly is extremely knowledgeable, highly skilled and very personable”.
In the end I took about 2+ years of classes with Kimberly, one class per week. Further, that was about three years ago. Whereas the only reason I stopped was I moved from the area. I know I could have continued with Skype or some other remote technology. I keep thinking I will. As the complications of life continue to get in the way.
The real story is with Kimberly skill, attention and personable nature, my guitar playing advanced more under her ‘wings’ then at any other time. Thank you Kimberly!

She has placed in several Australian competitions and is a two-time winner of Sydney "Theme and Variations" Outstanding Pianist Award and a three-time finalist for the ABC Symphony Australia Young Performer's Award. Nate has a very good ear, and is quickly able to identify problems, and thoroughly explain how to fix them. Whether a technique thing, or subtle nuances in timing, or tone, Nate always finds the clear path to expressing the goal, and how to get there.

I am finishing a minor in theory as part of my Doctorate.

Tyler is an international award winning composer from the state of Iowa, USA. Tyler has written for many mediums including film, opera, choir, orchestra, chamber and solo instruments, and electronics.

As a teacher, Tyler has taught voice, music theory, sight reading, and composition lessons to students of all ages. He has a degree in music education, a degree in composition, and is currently finishing his final degree.

Mr. S was a great teacher. He was always professional and fair about his tests and
grading. Aside from the basic music theory 1 curriculum itself, he gave the class additional input that gave some of the concepts more context. I learned alot. Most of all, I appreciated his willingness to help me on an individual basis. I don't think I grasped some of the concepts as fast as other students, but Mr. S was always there to lend a helping hand. At times, I'd run into him just as he was leaving the building, but he'd still help me with a homework problem or two. He didn't have to do this, but I'm thankful that he did. I'd recommend Mr. S to anyone wanting to take Music Theory.

Mr. S is an absolutely fantastic teacher. I doubt I would have learned as much as I did throughout the Aural skills sequence at UGA if he wasn't my instructor. He just has a way with teaching and getting concepts across that is very effective. He goes above and beyond to make sure no one in the class ever falls behind, and is very understanding and willing to give extra help. He's so great!.

I love Mr. S, he was very helpful and took time out of his schedule to help me when ever possible! The only thing I would say is try to include more dictations in class, don't focus as much on theory behind it, deffinetly still go over it but just not as much. For example it really did help though when, you would go over the functions of each chord and note. Thank you for a great year!

Tyler is teaching my daughter, who has Down Syndrome, to sing! He is kind, patient, and creative with his teaching style. His voice is amazing and his enthusiasm is contagious. He is passionate and does a wonderful job sharing his gift of music.
