My Ableton students should expect to work on developing their technical skills in the software to the point where the software does not get in the way of their expression. This is akin to developing your technique on an acoustic instrument. We will work on creating as many finished tracks as possible to make those skills happen quickly. All of this will include furthering the student's knowledge of music theory and compositional form, whether the student is a skilled acoustic musician just starting with Ableton, or a skilled Ableton user looking to develop their compositional technique.

All of my students will work on these foundations. From there, I work with my students to create a tangible system to organize their practice and goals so that we can work on more specific areas relevant to what they want out of their musical life. This system is extremely flexible and effective. I also encourage and assist my students to use this system in other areas of their lives, such as ...

I teach according to the needs of the student. While every singer desires to sing with a voice that is well-supported and beautiful simultaneously, the basics of voice anatomy will need to be understood when learning to sing. Knowledge of this will increase improvement in breathing, vocal placement, and development for a free, open sound. It is crucial that the student sings with the right technique, like activating the thyroarytenoid muscles, to sing with support. Similar to an instrumentalist developing a solid physical relationship with their musical instrument, the singer must do the same with their voice by practicing carefully and correctly. Furthermore, the finding of the “natural voice” is how any singing is possible. To find your natural voice, one must remember that singing is significantly different from speaking. There are some similarities to keep in mind but singing requires conscious breathing, good posture, proper breath support, and an open throat.

Jean-Pierre is a phenomenal piano teacher who really has a true passion for music. He is endlessly patient and persistent - If you want to learn something, he’ll find a way to teach it to you. It's rare to find such a skilled music teacher who can adapt from teaching the smallest fundamental details to the highest philosophical aspects of music. With Jean-Pierre, you are no longer just learning and playing the pieces, you are fully experiencing the music. My lessons with him, and his great sense of humour, were always a highlight. I cannot recommend him enough.

the Impact that Dr C. has had on me as both a musician and a person has been immeasurable. His patience and kindness coupled with his incredible skill have made him an incredible teacher and wonderful person to play alongside whenever he has accompanied me. His drive and desire to always better my playing have made him incredible to learn from and his calming presence has meant that performances with him have always been a pleasure. His personal and caring nature has also made him a wonderful mentor as well as a teacher and he has instilled both confidence within me whenever I play and above all, a deep love for the music that I am playing. I can honestly say that I wouldn’t be half the musician I am today if not for Dr C. incredible input!

Jean-Pierre is truly a unique teacher. His highly personal, practical approach to the teaching of music makes the process of learning both enjoyable and fascinating. His passion for music is evident in his teaching, prioritizing the talents and interests of his students rather than imposing a conventional, one-dimensional syllabus. His skills as a pianist are unparalleled, and my experience playing the cello together with Jean-Pierre (as my accompanist) have been beneficial to my own sound and personality as a musician. Furthermore, as I myself have learnt to play an instrument largely through the use of Skype lessons, I can say with utmost confidence that working with Jean-Pierre through an online medium will both be a worthwhile and enriching experience. Jean-Pierre is by no means a traditional music teacher; rather he is a dedicated and passionate embodiment of what modern music teaching should be!

"On the day of our first lesson, my son decided he did not want to take any singing or piano lessons after all. Since it was too late to cancel, and with the hopes he might change his mind, we went ahead with the lesson. Julia stayed professional, calm, and warm through the whole session, despite my son's lack of enthusiasm, and she tried everything to make him comfortable. She told him that the fear of singing in front of people is very normal, explained how lessons would work were he to continue, and gave a bunch of very helpful tips on singing AND piano in terms a 12 year old understands. Hopefully he will decide this is something he wants to do after all. Julia was obviously very knowledgeable, talented, and great with kids, and I hope we can continue lessons with her."

"I remember being blown away after my very first lesson with Fawn. I learned more in that one lesson than I ever did in 6 months with my other vocal teacher here in NY. ONE LESSON! I thought it would slow down from there, but it hasn't! Every lesson I leave a bit better, a bit stronger, more knowledgable and it is exciting now to be a vocalist! I realize before all those years with other teachers I was a novelist. NOW I AM A BONAFIDE VOCALIST! I was also skeptical of online vs in person lessons, but Fawn doesn't skip a beat! I can't wait to continue growing on this journey with Fawn."

She looks forward to her lessons every week and when I come home from work, I find her practicing on her own. I'm so grateful to Mr. Sal for not only teaching Sophia music and piano, but also for teaching her at an early age hard work and perseverance. I highly recommend him!"

Five Movies that Will Change the Way You Look at the Piano

Settling in for movie night? Here, St. Augustine, FL teacher Heather L. shares her recommendations for five piano films every musician should watch...   Movies have an amazing way of changing how we look at the world. Every once in a while, some studio will release one that has a tremendous impact on so many of us. After the Cold War fighter jet film "Top Gun" came out in the 1980s, for example, the United States Navy saw a huge increase in recruitments to their aviation program. When a …
