I am a professional peer, and fellow guitar instructor. Having known Kayla for the last several years, I have seen how her simple, yet masterfully thorough approach to instruction can excite and entertain students of all ages.

Kayla uses her collegiate level music theory and performance background to educate on a plethora of subjects. However, she clearly communicates beneficial concepts to both children and adults alike.

I highly recommend Kayla both as a peer, and a student. I’ve benefited from her wisdom, and insight throughout the years, and I know you will too.

Ukulele lessons are incorporated into my instruction practice as ukulele is traditionally easier than guitar for inexperienced players. It’s a smaller body, neck, and fretboard, and has nylon strings instead of steel strings. It will help the student develop confidence in their playing to songs that inspire them. My son has a great student–teacher relationship. It takes the right teacher to help enjoy learning while challenging him to improve with each lesson and not to short any song. Steve's online sound experience has really impressed us.

I played an organ years ago ( I am 70 years old) and lost a lot of skills. I now have a digital piano, but I was not satisfied with my progress.

So I signed up for lessons with Steve. I took piano lessons from Steve for about 18 months. I moved about an hour away, so it was not practical to continue with him.

The lessons from Steve were exactly what I was looking for. He figured out my skill level and set up a plan for me. He stressed the fundamentals while teaching a song at the same time. Being able to play a song, even a simple one, was a great reward. Then we progressed to develop more skills and more interesting songs.

Steve is patient, attentive and a good coach. He genuinely loves teaching and finds that “spark” in to build on. I saw this many times as I would listen to him teaching the student before me.

Steve is a great teacher and I strongly recommend him.
Nicole
Steve is a great instructor and took the time to work through any challenges and helped our son grow as a drummer. He has a great virtual setup that makes it sound you are in the studio with him.

Steven has been my good friend and coach for many years. He has a encyclopedic knowledge of music and can find anything you request, no matter how obscure. He has helped me tremendously in preparing for auditions and learning new tunes. His energy, enthusiasm, and sense of humor make the whole experience so enjoyable. I would recommend him to anyone looking for top notch vocal coach!
Oliver
Steven is amazing! He helped me A LOT with my audition. He’s patient, funny, very musically gifted and can play any song on command. 100% recommend!
Pam
Steven is the best vocal coach I've ever gone to. Steven shows you how to sing a song and get it over. He will give you ideas and offer suggestions. He can also transpose a song into a more comfortable key, on the spot---which is enormously helpful, if you have a voice that falls in between the traditional sheet music keys.
I would say, that for auditions, cabarets, or B'way shows, you can't do better than Steven--he knows his stuff, and most importantly, he cares about his students as individuals, and that is rare!

I have a simple, no-nonsense approach to vocal training, helping students build the vocal strength and coordination necessary to sing efficiently, using principles and exercises learned through over a decade of intensive vocal study in NYC.

Please be advised that I expect students to learn their music on their own (although I'll certainly give you some learning strategies, help with tricky passages, etc.). If you are looking for someone to "teach you the notes," I'm probably not who you're looking for. But, if you want to learn how to sing well and are willing to put in the work, I'd love to help you achieve your goals!

About Ted

My name is Ted D. and I have been teaching private lessons in both guitar and voice for over a decade. I began playing guitar at age eleven and continued into college, where I majored in guitar performance. While in college I began studying voice seriously, adding a vocal performance major to my de

Very easy and friendly atmosphere . I am beginner with a very weak voice . I took Few classes with Ted and my voice became strong and pleasant. Now I have confidence when I sing. Great instructor.

Knows his stuff, great teacher.

“If you can sing opera you can sing anything.” This is something I learned while taking vocal lessons with Ted Dougherty. Many voice teachers aim to silo you into one style of singing but that is not the case with Ted. He will help you build your voice to be the strongest it can be while encouraging you to practice and sing the types of music you are passionate about. Ted is an extremely talented musician who not only has the knowledge to teach you new techniques, but also has the ability to demonstrate those techniques. I started voice lessons with him when I was 12 years old and only ended my lessons with him when I went away to college years later. I truly believe, were it not for my lessons with Ted, I would not have the quality voice I have today. If I lived anywhere near Raleigh, NC, nothing would be able to stop me from going for voice lessons with Ted as often as possible.
