Guitar is my main instrument which I have been teaching for 13 years. I like to start beginner students with a basic knowledge of chords and rhythm to get them playing as soon as possible, and then supplement that knowledge with some music theory.

About Aaron
Hello fellow and future musicians, and thanks for checking out my profile!

To tell you a little about myself, I was exposed to music at a very young age since my dad was a musician. I first picked up the drums at the age of 5, and took piano lessons for a year when I was 6. I later played the saxophone in 4th grade, and finally discovered the guitar when I was 9. (Ironic since my dad is a guitarist and the guitar was around the house forever!) He showed me my first chords and really got me started on the instrument, and I played in several local bands in high school playing a range of musical styles from rock, blues, funk, and reggae. I really didn't take music seriously until I was in college, and began studying under Jerry Coelho, a member of the very first graduating class of the Guitar Institute of Technology in Hollywood, CA, and
Dominic Castillo, a graduate of Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA, who was a student of Jerry's as well. After studying under these talented musicians, I went on to pursue my education in music and received my BA in Music from San Jose State University in 2004. I started teaching music privately during my time with Jerry and Dominic and continued to teach during college up until the present, and have taught hundreds of students since. I now live in San Diego where I teach, work as a freelance musician, and play in local funk/jazz/rock group Science Fiction Jazz and gypsy/kickstomp outfit Quel Bordel!

*** Lesson Details ***
I am a very easy going, friendly individual who believes that learning music is built upon a strong relationship between teacher and student. This relationship involves good communication, honesty, open mindedness, and most importantly the desire to LEARN and have FUN. I approach teaching music by knowing and understanding the student's musical goals, and teaching fundamentals, theory, and technique through the style(s) of music that the student wants to learn. For beginners, I tend to teach basic techniques and chords through simple songs to get the student playing music as quickly as possible.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Living Room: couches, table and TV, music stand, student can borrow instrument for first lesson, parents can sit in on lesson

*** Specialties ***
My main musical styles that I perform and teach are rock, blues, jazz, funk, R&B, and reggae. I studied jazz in college so I also have extensive knowledge of jazz theory.

My first lesson with Justin went well. I have social anxiety so meeting new people is always a stressful experience for me. I was much more comfortable than expected and learned a lot. I definitely recommend Justin if you are looking for lessons in any of the areas he offers.

While my background is in classical guitar, I enjoy exploring other genres such as jazz guitar. If you're not sure what genre you want to study, let's first learn the basics and then go from there.

About Phil
I've been playing guitar for over 20 years and teaching since 2008. Along with teaching, I've also been pursuing music recording, an endeavor which has produced two full-length albums and one that is still in progress that should be released sometime in 2018.

*** Lesson Details ***
When teaching guitar or any other instrument, I typically use a method book to guide the lessons. In addition to the lesson book, which will cover music-reading, we'll learn scales, chords and strum patterns, among other things. I try to tailor each lesson according to the student's skill level and individual musical interests.

After learning the basics, we can learn different styles of music, including rock, blues, jazz, classical, etc. I look forward to exploring these genres with you!

*** Travel Equipment ***
I bring my own instrument. I would ex
pect my student to have or to rent his/her own instrument.

Mark is a fantastic teacher. He is very patient and positive at all times. My teenage daughter and I both take lessons and he is very comfortable with our different learning styles and speeds. I particularly appreciate his focus on teaching from real songs. His attention to detail is great and I am always impressed that he is teaching us to listen and decode the chords, the strums and subtle little moments in the music. I highly recommend Mark - even for 50-something beginners like myself.

About Maria
MISSION STATEMENT:

The mission of my studio is to create well-rounded, educated musicians who will always have a lifelong passion for the art no matter their long-term goals. I strive for my students to be:

(1) Lifelong learners who develop successful learning habits.
(2) Creative and critical thinkers who will become effective communicators.
(3) Responsible and respectful members of society who respect other cultures.
(4) Able to set short-term and long-term goals and be able to see them through to their success.

TEACHING PHILOSOPHY:

It is of the utmost importance that my students are well-educated in their chosen instrument; they must know and understand music and music-making. Students who can play are a dime a dozen, but students who understand the music they are playing are often hard to find. I teach students to kno
w music thoroughly, not just to “play.” I desire my students to comprehend elements of the score, to use their bodies effectively to make good sound, and to interpret music creatively and according to historical performance practices across all genres of music. Thus, I give students a purposeful education in technique, quality literature, performance and artistry, music theory, and music history.

Although students differ in ability and development, I maintain high expectations for our students. I expect attention and respect in lessons, faithful and diligent practice, careful adherence to instructions, and an “I’ll-do-my-best” attitude. If students regularly meet these expectations, then they will excel to the level that they are able. It is my joy to help students master their music, to do the best they can, and to strive for and achieve excellence.

Lastly, I want students to enjoy and appreciate their instrument, music, and music-making; and I know as as a teacher, I am very influential in making this happen. Students develop enjoyment of music by understanding music, experiencing success in music, being exposed to good and varied genres of music, and receiving instruction from a teacher who is enthusiastic and encouraging. It is my goal to provide all of these opportunities for students, and as a result their lives will be enriched as they enjoy their instrument.

If you don't have a great foundation on your instrument, you're going to struggle later on when you attempt more difficult songs/pieces. I think it is imperative to solidify proper technique early on, and that thought will reflect in my teaching. I'm self taught for the most part, but I have had a few lessons which have helped immensely, and I will continue to learn as I guide you through the wonderful experience that is playing and understanding the guitar.

About Michael
Hello! My name is Michael and I've been playing guitar for 8 years in groups and solo. I hold a Music B.A. from University of California, San Diego with an emphasis in Music Theory & Composition. As a student and teacher, I've learned that the most important things that go into learning an instrument at any proficiency level are clear communication, dedication, and most importantly, having fun! Everyone plays their instrument for fun, so why should lessons be any different? I look forward to seeing you and helping you improve your guitar skill.

My lessons are very adaptive and cater to your styles. While I specialize in rock, blues, and jazz, I can also help develop skills in classical and world music.

About Julian
Hi! I'm Julian. While I specialize in guitar, I also know my way around keys, bass, and a drumkit. I've been teaching guitar for about 11 years, and have spent a few years teaching out of music shops. My style is adaptive and fluid to suit a wide range of desires and skill levels, but in addition to guitar technique you can expect to learn a good deal about music theory. I love teaching music more than anything and would rather do nothing else. I come from a blues/rock background and studied jazz guitar and music production at Shenandoah University. If you think we'd be suitable for one another, don't hesitate to contact me!

About Johanna
Hello! My name is Johanna Millin.
I'm from New York City where I grew up listening to jazz, rock and R&B. I began music performance studies at Syracuse University then returned to NYC to continue private lessons in piano and guitar. Once back in NYC, I pursued a professional career in music which led to performing in numerous rock bands, soul bands and sitting in the pit of an off Broadway show.
I've been playing for over 20 years, and have performed 10+ of those years. I am currently a guitar/piano/ukulele/bass instructor for an after-school program in Decatur. I also perform with local bands here in Atlanta.

****Travel Equipment****
Students must have their own equipment. Lessons are held at my studio. I teach on both electric and acoustic guitar.

My strengths are patience, enthusiasm and fun. I design lessons based on your
learning style, and for older students I ask "who are your influences". I look forward to meeting you and furthering your musical interest.

Mrs. Millin is an impressively gifted instructor. Not only she has a command of the subject she teaches, but she also has terrific teaching skills. Indeed, in addition to teaching with ease, she makes it easier for her students to enjoy learning and to mastering with ease the subject she teaches. Mrs. Millin is my personal music instructor. I have never studied music before. Mrs. Millin, who is my very first music instructor, has led me to have a command of the musical language in a very short period of time. Additionally, she has made me capable of already playing the piano. I will definitely recommend Mrs. Millin to whoever would like to learn, in a very fast pace, music or a musical instrument. Personally, I will forever remain grateful and thankful to her. I really enjoy being her student!
Many thanks and congratulations to you, great instructor!
Your student, Bruno Valentin ABIA.

I have been playing guitar and bass for over 15 years. It has been a fantastic and rewarding musical journey that has given me many experiences performing, composing, recording, teaching, and producing music. I began primarily self-taught for the first seven years and then proceeded to attend and graduate from the Atlanta Institute of Music, where I achieved a performance-based scholarship. I think that my learning approach ultimately helps me teach students through both classical training and more colloquially-based methods so that I can easily relate to most students and adapt a teaching method that suits them best. My method also teaches students in general how to set their own goals and ultimately achieve the goals they set, which is a very practical life skill.

About Bryan
I have been playing guitar and bass for over 15 years, which has been a remarkable and rewarding musical journey. After teaching myself for seven years, I decided to attend the Atlanta Institute of Music from which I graduated with a performance-based scholarship. My own approach to learning has helped me to teach students from all various backgrounds as I am able to adapt my lesson plans to accommodate either a more classical or more colloquial approach to effectively relate the material to each student effectively. My lesson plans are structured around the goals that students set for themselves, which I then show them how to achieve in a practical manner. This is a great life skill that will extend even beyond music. The only goals that cannot be reached are the ones you tell yourself repeatedly "I can't", which is the only real ba
