Eric M.

Villa Park, IL

I love to play the trumpet. I play it in shows almost every day and love the way that Jazz sounds coming through a horn!

About Eric

I am a professional musician who enjoys helping young people reach their musical goals. I perform regularly as a solo act and play with a band at various hotels in Chicago. I went to Millikin University in Decatur for music where I toured the country and played and sang in the top ensembles. I also studied at the Music Industry Workshop in Chicago for music production and engineering. My goal is to help you learn the songs you love and show you how to make the technical side of music more fun than you ever imagined!

*** Lesson Details ***
You can expect a laid back atmosphere that is v
ery productive. I use a custom curriculum that is catered to the needs and desires of the individual. Whether you would like to be a concert pianist, a jazzy horn player, or someone who wants to rock out to your favorite tunes, I have resources and experience to help you reach your goal. After three months you can expect to competently play a couple great songs and have greater fluidity and technique on your instrument.

*** Studio Equipment ***
The In-Studio lessons are taught in a recording studio which includes music stands, keyboards, piano, amps, acoustic guitar, and seating available. Parking on the street.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Students will need the instrument of their study and their purchased study materials. If the student is taking piano, they will need an 88 key weighted keyboard or a piano.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in jazz, but can teach classical, pop, rock, funk, blues, salsa, bossa nova etc.

Eric was just the person we were looking for to help my 13 yr old son to get started again with lessons. He connected with my son. They also connected because my son is an athlete and Eric can relate because of his background.

Caleb M.

Chicago, IL

I've been playing trumpet for 18 years, and I'm anxious to pass along my love for the instrument to others of all ages! I teach a variety of styles with my experience performing many kinds of music from classical to hip-hop. Whatever your interests I can get you playing with a healthy approach to brass playing and solid fundamentals!

About Caleb

Caleb moved from his hometown of Wichita, Kansas, to Chicago in 2008 to attend DePaul University, where he received his Bachelor’s in Trumpet Performance studying under Matt Lee and Tage Larsen. Since then, Caleb has picked up a variety of regular gigs across a wide spectrum of styles, genres, and types of events.

Caleb performs in Chicago with soul-pop band The Right Now, the progressive Pocket Radio, the soulful Bassel and the Supernaturals, the genre-defying Willy Dynomite, the Latin-grooved Contrabanda, and funk outfit Nasty Snacks. He has played in horn sections for Latin, funk, and bi
g-band jazz bands, as well as Afrobeat, indie rock, R&B/soul, and hip-hop/rap groups.

He has also played principal trumpet in symphony orchestras, pit orchestras and in the DePaul Screamin’ Demons Pep Band at Madison Square Garden. Caleb also regularly lends his solo talents to wedding parties and church services, and is one-fourth of the Chicago for-hire horn section Revolution Horns. Other musical endeavors include playing at Chicago Blackhawks games, a performance on the Steve Harvey Show, playing trumpet for the Broadway musical I Love Lucy in downtown Chicago, and a coveted chance to perform in master classes for his idols Adolph “Bud” Herseth and Chris Martin.

Caleb has been teaching privately in the Chicago area for a little over three years and is eager to teach students with any amount of experience, especially those who are eager to approach music from a variety of perspectives.

Caleb is an amazing trumpet specialist and a wonderful wonderful trumpet teacher. My son who is now 12 started taking private lessons with Caleb in Dec 2014 as a complete beginner. He has progressed so much in a little over a year that he is the best trumpetor in his middle school. And he may be performing in a jazz band with high schoolers this fall. This is greatly because of Caleb. He is incredible with children and teens. He is patient, fun, and firm. We are so glad we found him.

Daniel K.

Chicago, IL

Focus on correct technique and myriad method approaches along with professional level achievement for recording and performance.

About Daniel

Daniel, a former faculty member of Columbia College in Chicago, is a studio and live performance singer and musician based in Chicago. His teaching and performing experience spans three decades, and includes expertise in the studies of voice, guitar, piano, bass, drums, and trumpet, along with music theory, arranging, and composing. He is a Lincoln Academy Student Laureate who holds a BA in Music Composition, and has attended graduate courses in education at Roosevelt University and DePaul University in Chicago. He has taught students of all ages at private studios, public school, and college.

Daniel is described by his students as a natural teacher. He prefers to be regarded as an advancing student, and takes the journey along with his students to guide them towards their goals with a friendly, positive, efficient and productive approach. He feels that music is within all of us, and a desire to learn is a sign of talent, so anyone can develop their musical abilities with methodical practice.

The musical journey for Daniel began at an early age with trumpet and piano studies which became a passion for him by the age of 14. He was the drum major of the high school marching band, and successfully completed a paid contract to arrange music for the high school jazz band which performed in a state beauty pageant. He began teaching privately after high school, and continued playing in bands, and composing original music. He formed a professional jazz ensemble under the name of the Chicago Jazz Players by the age of 22, and developed his arranging techniques while having it performed by an eighteen piece orchestra consisting of many great local artists. It was in this environment that he gained experience with brass, woodwinds, and rhythm instruments. He was granted a position at Columbia College as an instructor at age 29 where he taught theory, sight singing, musicianship, ear training, harmony, orchestration, and composition. He scored the music for several plays, and conducted his own pieces with Chicago Symphony and Lyric Opera Players. During those years he found himself playing the guitar and singing more than anything else. It was in 1995 that he focused on singing and playing the guitar with his rock band. He has produced several CD recordings of his original music in his own studio, and has helped produce local bands and artists. He performs regularly in the Chicago area.

*** Lesson Details ***
Daniel exhibits patience and care with each student, and develops an individualized approach based on clear goals with practical procedures. Most beginners can expect to have a working knowledge of music notation and how it applies to their instrument within three months, and should be developing fluency in performing music that they enjoy within six months. Advancing students will enjoy the rewards that will follow by studying with an experienced teaching musician that will recognize strengths and weaknesses, and recommend proven techniques for personal musical development. Studying music should be fun, fulfilling, and in harmony with the needs and desires of the student, and this is key to the philosophy held by Daniel.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Eight track recording gear; grand piano; guitars/bass (acoustic & electric); cables/amps, drum kit and percussion.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide lesson materials, and always have a metronome with me. I expect the student to have an instrument. I prefer that a student has a music stand.

*** Specialties ***
Customized approach to the individual based on needs and goals.

Excellent teacher who is incredibly knowledgeable in all aspects of music. His use of the "pivot system" got me reading music in no time. As with all lessons, practice helps move things along, but even when "life" got in the way, Dan always made great use of our time. I will probably start up with him again once my schedule clears.

Alex F.

Chicago, IL

Many of us who play or have played the trumpet started out in 5th grade band. Myself included! I currently play trumpet for various celebrations at church, and I am part of the Des Plaines Community Band. Whether you are looking to start out on the trumpet, or want some tutoring to polish the skills you already have, I would love to be a part of your journey on the [best] brass instrument!

I will provide a binder and any supplemental lesson materials. Any books will be dependent on the particular student and will be discussed in lessons.

You should have your own instrument - If you need help finding an instrument i will help you locate one that is best for you!

About Alex

Music started like most people do in 5th grade band. I began with trumpet and guitar. My guitar skills quickly led me to playing in weekly church masses. Eventually before leaving elementary school I took up piano and before long was playing it in church. Now I am director of music at St. Helen's Catholic Church in Chicago and accompany various school and church choirs in the Chicago area.

It may be cliche, but music is my life. Music is an important part of everyone's life. We all enjoy different kinds of music, in different ways - whether that means playing, listening, creating - whateve
r! Music surrounds us - the radio, the train, the bus, the birds - the rhythm of life! Learning more about the music around us and how to interpret it and enjoy it I think is a wonderful way to enrich your life.

Alex thank you for teaching me and helping me learn how to play the guitar. You helped me learn hard music notes at the beginning and helped me learn songs right away. Now I'm learning three more songs with your chord packet. Miss taking classes with you. I hope I get to see you again soon!

Alex was a great teacher and believed in me all the time even if I didn't get the chance to practice my songs or play my scales right. He even let me pick songs I wanted to play when I did good at practice. Alex was patient and supportive and taught me many things. He made me like music even more than I used to and made every lesson exciting and interesting. Overall Alex is a great Music Teacher! :)

Kyle M.

Chicago, IL

I help my students improve their basic fundamentals, from playing posture to music reading. I teach a variety of styles of techniques using supplemental materials such as Getchell and Arban's books, as well as my own exercises. I believe that teachers should be strict about getting in the necessary practice time, but I'm also not afraid to crack a goofy joke every once in a while.

About Kyle

Growing up in a family of musicians, Kyle has been playing trumpet since before he was big enough to hold it on his own. Since he started teaching trumpet in 2011, he has taught kids of all ages and skill levels.

In 2014, Kyle received a Bachelor of Arts in Music with a concentration in Jazz Studies from Columbia College Chicago. There, he performed with the Columbia College Jazz Ensemble, as well as a number of other ensembles covering many genres including jazz, pop, hip-hop and R&B. He also had the honor of performing in concert with Christian McBride, Paula Cole, jazz legend Benny Gols
on and many more.

Currently, Kyle teaches trumpet (and beginning guitar) throughout Chicago and the southwest suburbs, and performs with groups of varying styles around town. He believes trumpet is a cool instrument for many reasons, and he is eager to help aspiring players of all ages learn how to play it well.

Kyle is a great instructor that notices my bad habits and fixes them. He is good at using excercises and warmups to build technique, and selecting pieces of music to apply those techniques. He also gives advice on how to practice and cares about whether or not I am improving.

My daughter is very easily distracted during her music lessons and Kyle somehow manages to keep her focused and on target. She is also a perfectionist and gets very upset when she doesn't do everything right the first time through. Kyle is very patient with her and encourages her to persevere. I don't think my daughter would have continued playing trumpet without the encouragement and enthusiasm Kyle has provided.
