Jocelyn H.

Chicago, IL

Whether you want to work on opera or classical music in general, or just gain a better understanding of healthy singing technique, I am a great voice teacher with several years of experience and a masters degree in vocal performance. I am open to working on art songs, arias, scenes, operatic roles or chorus parts in Italian, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese and Latin.

About Jocelyn

I am currently a professional singer as well as a music teacher here in the Chicago area. While I am in Chicago the majority of the time working and performing, I do travel throughout the US and Europe for performances, which recently have included New York, Hawaii, Indiana, Toronto and Salzburg, Austria. I have studied singing privately for over 13 years in styles ranging from classical and opera, to pop, musical theater and jazz. I have also taken advanced classes on vocal pedagogy and the method behind teaching singing properly and healthily. In addition to singing, I have also studied seve
ral languages (Italian, German, French, Spanish), diction, acting/performance, music history, music theory and marketing, which all come together to create the entire package necessary when teaching and performing as a singer. I have also studied piano extensively, having played for over 20 years, and began teaching piano lessons over 10 years ago. I play the piano during the singing lessons that I teach, which is important for warm ups, learning notes and especially the opportunity to sing with live accompaniment.

*** Lesson Details ***
For me, the most important part of any music lesson is you, the student, and helping you grow and learn based one your unique interest in music.

Whether you already love singing or playing, or just want to try something new, I will make sure to find a balance of pieces that will help you grow technically as a musician, and the styles that you really enjoy or that drew you to music in the first place. Because of this, the actual curriculum of the lessons I teach will vary greatly depending on your level and what genre of singing or piano you are interested in learning.

I do expect my students to work on their assigned music over the week and to come prepared to all of their lessons because it takes a sense of curiosity and commitment towards music and practicing if you want to improve. However, if you encounter problems with a certain part of a piece that you can't get past, or something big comes up during the week, all you have to do is let me know and come with questions that we can work through together during your lesson.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Full weighted Keyboard, in the studio room with seating for parents

*** Travel Equipment ***
I expect students to have a piano or full keyboard if I am going to travel to their house.

Abigail loves her lessons; I suggested to her that she let you know she has a personal cordless microphone & amplifier. I thought the usage of microphone would be cool to use. Of course, this was only a suggestion, what do you think?

Eric was just the person we were looking for to help my 13 yr old son to get started again with lessons. He connected with my son. They also connected because my son is an athlete and Eric can relate because of his background.

Jane H.

Chicago, IL

About Jane

I am a graduate of Lawrence University with a BA in Music (Piano) and German. I've played piano for almost 20 years, but in college performed more with voice. In college as a BA candidate I was able to take a variety of lessons, including classical piano (my major), jazz piano, classical voice, and jazz voice. One of my favorite projects in college included a recital comprised of all the types of music I love playing and learning about such as a solo piano piece, a few piano duets, a piece where I sang and accompanied myself, a vocal jazz small group, and a few others.

I'm currently workin
g in a jazz trio with a guitarist and trumpeter playing (and singing) tunes from tons of different genres, such as Erykah Badu's "Window Seat", Thom Yorke's "Eraser", Incubus' "Anti-Gravity Love Song", Ceu's "Cangote", a handful of different jazz standards, and much more. The trio project is a good example of all the types of music I love to sing and teach.

My goal for the next year is to complete a 12 track album with my trio. Just thinking about it is exciting!!

Taking lessons with me I can teach you specifics on classical voice or piano and jazz voice or piano, but we can also work on combining them!

*** Lesson Details ***
Lessons with me will be laid-back but focused. Each student will receive an individualized curriculum based upon their needs/wants from their lessons. Believe me, I've had some bone-dry teachers in the past, and if you're not having fun and liking what you're doing, you're most likely going to forget the lesson you just had. We're going to learn by having fun and doing what I love most!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Music room, full-sized live-action keyboard, two chairs and bench, mirror, room for parents wait

*** Travel Equipment ***
Students need to have a piano or a full-sized keyboard on which to practice or have lessons.

*** Specialties ***
Personally I am interested in many different genres of music (classical voice, jazz voice, classical piano, jazz piano, accompanying), and in college I was able to take many different kinds of lessons to fulfill my needs. As a result, I feel very comfortable teaching others about all sorts of different genres of music.

Wendy P.

Chicago, IL

Bel canto instruction and technique with a clear outline of warm up techniques using Kristin Linklater techniques. I am a classically trained singer, familiar with the repertoire, as well as diction in Italian, French, German and Latin. The goal is utter freedom and beauty of the voice, enabling you to express the scope of contemporary and classical composers.

About Wendy

I am a professional singer, songwriter and actor working in the Chicago area for many years. I have a B.F.A. in Theater/Voice from The University of Kansas and an M.A. in Interdisciplinary Arts from Columbia College Chicago. I've been teaching private vocal instruction since 2003: I host the Singer's Salon in Chicago, a unique and supportive venue for singer's to become more comfortable performing before an audience. I also instruct workshops for vocal technique and performance. For the past 10 years I was the lead singer for The Red Apples, an acoustic roots band that performs an eclectic mix
of rock, swing, blues, country and jazz. I also have a cabaret/art song project consisting or original material with composer Jaroslaw Golembiowski. As a singer and actress I have performed with many major theaters in the Chicago area, including Court Theater, Victory Gardens, National Jewish Theater, Bailiwick Theater, and Prop Theater.

*** Lesson Details ***
As a classically trained singer I will instruct you in all aspects of singing technique, from breath control and support to improving your tone, range, flexibility and resonance. My familiarity with a variety of musical styles from pop/rock, R&B, and country, to musical theater, lounge and jazz makes me an ideal teacher for those interested in contemporary styles.

I have spent many years developing my own style of singing and instruction. I draw on my experiences and training not only in music, but theater and movement, (Linklater, Alexander Technique, Grotowski) to create a well rounded approach to singing and performing. As an instructor, I am most interested in helping students find their true voice and artistic style. I teach students to find expression through and with a foundation of technique, rather then in spite of it. I also am very interested in helping students deal with the mental/emotional aspects of performance, an all important area so frequently ignored by music teachers. My style is nurturing, yet disciplined, and sprinkled liberally with good-natured humor."

*** Studio Equipment ***
My studio space is fully equipped with a piano, P.A. system with microphones, CD, MP3 player for tracks, and ability to record lessons if the student desires.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Please have a piano (in tune!) or keyboard for use in your in home lessons.

*** Specialties ***
I am classically trained, but I am very adept at teaching music in a wide variety of styles, including most contemporary styles of music including pop/rock, roots, swing, jazz and blues, country, r&b, and of course musical theater and cabaret. My band performs an eclectic mix of originals and covers in the roots rock genre, and I write music as well. I have many years of experience in the theater as an actress, and I coach acting technique and performance. I coach singer/songwriters, and all types of singers, of all ages. I have a workshop that specializes in helping people learn to perform better in front of an audience, and I host the Singer's Salon in Chicago, which is a supportive opportunity to perform regularly! I also coach bands, to improve their vocals, harmonies, etc.

I met Wendy Parman when she was the lead in a musical comedy, and I had a small supporting role. I began taking lessons with Wendy at the end of the play's run. I greatly appreciate how Wendy individualizes lessons to meet my needs. She is able to hone in on my specific vocal challenges, and has given me strategies and exercises to work on at home. In addition she has helped me choose audition songs and prepare me for those auditions. Her Singer's Salon provides a safe and nurturing space in which to perform in front of an audience comprised of aspiring singers of all ages and experience levels. In addition to being an excellent teacher, Wendy is a talented performer who understands what it takes to audition, play a role, and entertain a live audience or in front of the camera.

A Classical Voice, Opera Voice, or Opera Singing student must be at least 12 years old. Singing lessons are appropriate for ages 8 and older. Opera Voice lessons are the same as Classical Voice lessons, but with an emphasis on building power and endurance.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Your First Singing Lesson______________________________

Singing is good for you. Healthy reasons to take singing lessons include deep breathing, balanced posture, relaxation, and abdominal strength. Additional benefits are confidence enhancement, cultural awareness, emotional expression, memory support, and stress relief. Some people sing to share spiritual joy.

A singing lesson is like a private exercise class. Be prepared to move around, making weird sounds and stupid faces. Dress for physical activity, including appropriate shoes. Keep makeup light enough to touch your face and lips. Don't wear anything that covers your neck. Jewelry should ...

About Melodie

Thank you for your interest! My approach to all instruction is based on blending student aspirations with traditional, yet flexible methods. I will always try to work with the paper music and workbooks the student already owns, and to tailor the lessons toward the most practical value. On the other hand, I believe the teacher has an ethical responsibility to provide at least a minimum of classical instruction.

Thank you for being the kind of prospective student that reads carefully through my entire profile. If you think reading it is too much work, you should probably choose a different teacher.

An adult voice or singing lesson has a minimum duration of 45min. All other lessons may be 30min or longer.

Singing and Voice students should read Your First Singing Lesson, found on the subject page.

I might be able to travel within Wicker Park / Noble Square / East Village / Ukrainian Village. Travel fee is an additional $10 per lesson.

I accept Schedule-As-You-Go lessons, which means each lesson is scheduled on an individual, floating basis, with no standing appointment. I also accept a weekly "recurring" schedule, but not every other week. Repeating lessons must happen every week.

If the student is younger than 18, I must meet a parent/guardian before or at the first lesson. If the child's lesson is in my studio, the parent/guardian must see my studio before or at the first lesson. In my "studio" there is room for one student and one parent/guardian/friend. There is no room for any additional people. There is no waiting area, and the office is small.
-----------------------------------------------
I have decades of experience teaching private music lessons and performing professionally. I teach beginning to advanced singing, and beginning to intermediate piano. I also teach beginning to intermediate music theory, but online only, adults only. My teaching studio is a small office in my small apartment near the intersection of Chicago & Ashland.

The teacher and the student (and the parents) share the responsibility to maintain and magnify the student's enthusiasm. I am excellent at helping adult singers discover the voices they have. I am very good at listening to children, to learn how best to motivate them toward their parents' goals and their own musical interests. I am also very good at breaking down complicated concepts into easier steps.

I honor the opportunity to share the joy of music with you.
----------------------------------------------
Lesson Details
REPEAT: Singing and voice students should read Your First Singing Lesson, found on the subject page.

Please keep all fragrances to a strict minimum. If you wear too much, I'll refuse to teach you.

Be aware there will be one cat nearby in my "studio."

Bring to the first lesson an inquisitive mind and any paper music you'd like to work with. If you don't have any paper music we can work with pencil, paper, and staff paper until we decide upon an approach.

Piano students should have clipped nails, and regular access to a keyboard with a minimum of 61 TRADITIONAL SIZE keys, preferably with touch sensitivity, 10-note polyphony, a sustain pedal, and a music stand.

------------------
Music Theory is the only online subject offered, and is only offered online. Since it's online, I accept only adult students for this subject. If you'd like Music Theory lessons in my studio or at your home (limited travel options), sign up for Piano, and tell me you want piano lessons for music theory purposes.

Music Theory · In home
Melodie is a life-long musician whose deep knowledge and experience I enjoyed the benefit of while I was studying music theory in college. She had a knack for picking the perfect example and explanation to help understand concepts. She also made music come to LIFE when she would sing! Quite honestly, her talent and skills intimidated me - but she always was willing to share her JOY OF MUSIC without judgement. She always encouraged me to not just play music, but to FEEL the music, and pass that feeling to the audience. She doesn't just do this for a living. It is her passion - and it shows in the ongoing quality of her work.
