Jeff F.

Chicago, IL

I have been teaching beginner to professional of all ages for eighteen years. My students all have positive experiences and have given me great feedback!

About Jeff

I have been working as a freelance musician and private instructor in Chicago for fifteen years. During this time I have been hired to perform Jazz, Rock, R/B, and world music. As an instructor I have maintained a studio of five to twenty students on a weekly basis. I hold a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Northern Colorado in Percussion Performance, and a Master of Music degree from De Paul University in Jazz Studies.

*** Lesson Details ***
With committed weekly practice there are no limits to a student's potential. I like to use the term guide to describe my teaching
style. In a relaxed atmosphere, the student and I are working together to advance their musical goals. Sometimes goals are reached quickly, more often we need more time and repetition to advance. The mind learns quicker than the body, so focused practice will help train the body and bring it to the mind's level.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Finished Basement studio: drum set, snare drum, small mallet, xylophone and electric piano, room for parents to sit in on lesson

*** Travel Equipment ***
Student should provide sticks and mallets and purchase a book that we will work out of weekly.

*** Specialties ***
I feel comfortable teaching all levels of percussion. I have experience teaching a variety of styles Jazz, rock, classical, and world.

Jeff has been working with my 16 year old son, who started drum lessons to prepare for jazz band, for about 4 months now. Jeff is a a very skilled teacher and has been a joy to work with in terms of coordinating schedules and other logistics. My son has learned a great deal from Jeff in a very short time and very much enjoys working with him!

No matter what age, or skill level, i will give the student what he/she needs to have a solid foundation. I develop a great rapport with all of my students. Drum(s) include; snare drum work (if you can't wail on one drum more drums won't matter!), this includes reading, rudiments, you know, the good stuff. Drum set work, from beginner to advanced, goes along with snare work, all styles. Mallet percussion, bells, xylophone, marimba. hand percussion, bongos, congas, hand held small percussion.

About john

Not only is John an off-the-charts professional drummer, he's a fantastic human being as well! He loves music and it comes through in the lessons! In 35 years of playing and hanging around wannabees, John is the genuine musician! Anyone really wanting to learn correctly needs John. I recommend him 100%.

Donald S.

Oak Park, IL

On drumset, I emphasize, Rock,
Jazz, and Latin music while including stick
control, soloing, and reading. I love starting
beginners because that is a critical
time in a musician's development. I enjoy
introducing advanced students to new
instruments and preparing kids for college,
and I find it rewarding to work with
other professionals who are trying to
broaden their skills.

About Donald

Don Skoog is an independent musician, teacher, and writer who lives in Oak Park, Illinois. He performs on drumset, Latin percussion, marimba, and Flamenco cajón. His teachers include James Dutton,Vida Chenoweth, Gordon Stout, Karl Husa, Roberto Vizcaino, José Eladio, Rich Gajate Garcia, and Alejandro Carvajal. He has taught percussion at The American Conservatory of Music, Sherwood Music School, and The Contemporary Music Project, which he founded in 1984.

Don goes beyond book learning and emphasizes putting the learning experience into playing. He shows how to overcome obstacles that all of us experience when learning a instrument .He wants learning to be fun .He provides us with opportunities to practice what we've learned in the percussion ensemble or with other teachers from Cuba. What separates Don from other teachers is that he cares about all his students and gives us support .He inspires his students to play better and be happy. He always wants you to be happy and smiling after the lesson session regardless of your day previously .

I have been studying with Don for many years now, primarily bata and conga. Don has had a strong positive impact not only on my playing but on my life. I am a math teacher and I can say with confidence that the most important things a teacher can do are to impart a love of the topic to his or her students, to develop a drive to explore the topic in ever greater depth, and to provide the expertise, patience, and honest evaluation necessary to help each student to push the edge of his or her abilities. Don helped me to overcome some of the fears and frustrations that were thwarting my development as a drummer. Don taught me to listen. I love drumming more than I ever did before. I have more confidence in my ability to meet challenges, to gradually achieve things that are very difficult for me. The greatest joy I have in playing is in interacting with other musicians. That is a lot more fun than just playing drums in my basement. Don creates a community of musicians. I thank Don for opening my ears to a world of amazing music. I teach my students not to fear failure, not to fear making mistakes (although to be aware enough not to make the same mistake repeatedly) I wasn't taking my own lesson to heart. Don made that lesson real for me and I've made more progress in my playing this past year than ever before. I wholeheartedly recommend Don as a teacher. He is what a teacher, any sort of teacher, should be.

Ben W.

Sycamore, IL

Experienced drum teacher of 20 + years available for eager students of all experience levels and ages! I structure my lessons so students learn what they need to know for participation in any musical environment (i.e. school band, community groups, etc.) and help customize lessons for what they want to learn. I specialize in all drum and percussion styles, typically use the Reed, Riley, and Goldenberg books, and use the following equipment during lessons: Gretsch/Tama drums and Adams percussion.

About Ben

Hello! Thank you for taking the time to read through my background as your look for a drum teacher. Simply put: I love all things drums and percussion! By studying with me, you will learn how to read music (rhythm and pitch), learn fundamental stick/mallet techniques for the essential areas of drums/percussion, snare and keyboard mallets, and many important patterns and perfomance techniques necessary for success playing drumset and other percussion instruments.

Briefly, I have over 20 years of professional experience with a Bachelor of Music in Percussion Performance and a Post-Baccalaurat
e degree for my Illinois K-12 Music Teaching Licensure, both from Northern Illinois University. I have taught every age group of students from all diverse backgrounds. I have written many solos for marimba and snare drum and written drum music for many middle school/high school/college drum lines in Tennessee and Illinois, where I played professionally for over 10 years. These age groups cover everything from elementary students up through adult beginners. I have played with every type of band on small club stages to full-size festival stages. My students use a combination of my experienced teaching materials (curriculum) with other popular method books to help better serve each student's needs based on their strengths and weaknesses. I believe ever new student should be able to read music after studying with me and I make sure they are able to do this and learn the skills necessary to play with any school band or other type of band. I also combine modern technology with all drumming techniques, like Ableton Live and Garageband software, for recording/playback and Roland electronics to help with timing and play-alongs. I teach the two most common percussion grips: matched (most common) and traditional (more common in marching and jazz drumming). The word grip refers to how you hold the sticks and is essential for learning more advanced techniques that will help with learning more difficult music, whether for school- band auditions, state contests, or a different band audition. I have two drum sets and a marimba (keyboard mallets) in the lesson room for their lessons, among other percussion items. I'm an easy-going person and always eager to help each student become better skilled in their percussion studies while studying with me! :)

Ben has been able to get more out of my sons (beginner drums) than I ever would have thought possible in such a short period of time. He challenges my son every week and sets realistic expectations and goals. Ben has also been flexible and accommodating to meet the needs of me and my son. Overall, great experience.
