Daniel K.

Chicago, IL

About Daniel

Daniel, a former faculty member of Columbia College in Chicago, is a studio and live performance singer and musician based in Chicago. His teaching and performing experience spans three decades, and includes expertise in the studies of voice, guitar, piano, bass, drums, and trumpet, along with music theory, arranging, and composing. He is a Lincoln Academy Student Laureate who holds a BA in Music Composition, and has attended graduate courses in education at Roosevelt University and DePaul University in Chicago. He has taught students of all ages at private studios, public school, and college.

Daniel is described by his students as a natural teacher. He prefers to be regarded as an advancing student, and takes the journey along with his students to guide them towards their goals with a friendly, positive, efficient and productive approach. He feels that music is within all of us, and a desire to learn is a sign of talent, so anyone can develop their musical abilities with methodical practice.

The musical journey for Daniel began at an early age with trumpet and piano studies which became a passion for him by the age of 14. He was the drum major of the high school marching band, and successfully completed a paid contract to arrange music for the high school jazz band which performed in a state beauty pageant. He began teaching privately after high school, and continued playing in bands, and composing original music. He formed a professional jazz ensemble under the name of the Chicago Jazz Players by the age of 22, and developed his arranging techniques while having it performed by an eighteen piece orchestra consisting of many great local artists. It was in this environment that he gained experience with brass, woodwinds, and rhythm instruments. He was granted a position at Columbia College as an instructor at age 29 where he taught theory, sight singing, musicianship, ear training, harmony, orchestration, and composition. He scored the music for several plays, and conducted his own pieces with Chicago Symphony and Lyric Opera Players. During those years he found himself playing the guitar and singing more than anything else. It was in 1995 that he focused on singing and playing the guitar with his rock band. He has produced several CD recordings of his original music in his own studio, and has helped produce local bands and artists. He performs regularly in the Chicago area.

*** Lesson Details ***
Daniel exhibits patience and care with each student, and develops an individualized approach based on clear goals with practical procedures. Most beginners can expect to have a working knowledge of music notation and how it applies to their instrument within three months, and should be developing fluency in performing music that they enjoy within six months. Advancing students will enjoy the rewards that will follow by studying with an experienced teaching musician that will recognize strengths and weaknesses, and recommend proven techniques for personal musical development. Studying music should be fun, fulfilling, and in harmony with the needs and desires of the student, and this is key to the philosophy held by Daniel.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Eight track recording gear; grand piano; guitars/bass (acoustic & electric); cables/amps, drum kit and percussion.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide lesson materials, and always have a metronome with me. I expect the student to have an instrument. I prefer that a student has a music stand.

*** Specialties ***
Customized approach to the individual based on needs and goals.

Hanna M.

Chicago, IL

What styles of dance are you interested in learning? Hanna has been a dancer since the young age of three and specializes in teaching Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Modern, Contemporary, Dance Fitness and Creative Movement.

About Hanna

A dancer for most of her life, Hanna found the stretching and strengthening aspect of yoga to be an excellent complement to her dance training. It wasn't until she began classes at CorePower Yoga that she was able to find a deeper connection within herself and truly fell in love with the practice. A movement enthusiast, Hanna was immediately drawn to the physical challenges presented through creative Vinyasa flow sequences. Shortly after, she felt an energetic shift begin to impact her life in the most positive of ways. Hanna received her 200-Hour Yoga Teaching Certification in 2014, and now t
eaches yoga, dance, and helps lead yoga teacher trainings. Hanna’s yoga classes incorporate a focus on breath and alignment in order to flow seamlessly through postures, hoping that her students will find the same moving meditation that brings her to her mat every day. Hanna is thrilled that she is able to make a living doing what she loves by helping her students find their bliss.

Hanna is a recent graduate from Columbia College Chicago where she received her Bachelor of Arts degrees in Dance and Arts Management. Hanna's focus has shifted to teaching yoga primarily, but she continues to train and perform throughout the Chicago dance community. Hanna loves teaching dance and fitness class to students of all ages and experience levels. Hanna believes that if you’re not moving, you’re not growing and everyone can reap the benefits of a happy and healthy body, mind, and spirit.

Hanna caters her private lessons to the individual goals and needs of her students. What are your goals? Let's work together to achieve them!

I had my second lesson with Hanna this week and she has been great so far. As someone new to yoga, I would highly recommend Hanna. She took the time before we started the lessons to answer all of my questions. She is very patient and friendly. I like the way she has explained yoga so far; the styles, poses, flows and the mental and spiritual aspects. She has a calm demeanor.

She has also been mindful of my existing shoulder injury to make sure that what we're doing isn't aggravating it. The other nice thing is she's been good about responding to my questions quickly and throughly and she's been on-time for both lessons.

Darcy C.

Chicago, IL

I teach ballet, jazz, tap and hip hop at Dance Center in Evanston, and ballet and tap to adults at Dance Studio in Rogers Park. I previously created the curricula and taught ballet at the Robert Crown Center in Evanston, and before that I taught at the Batavia Academy of Dance.

I have been dancing for 20 years and teaching dance for several. I love to teach beginners--whether age 2, 6, or 66. I also teach and choreograph for intermediate and advanced dancers.

I grew up training seriously in ballet, pointe, tap, jazz, modern, and lyrical primarily at the School of Performing Arts in Naperville, IL, where I danced with their performing and competing ensemble for seven years, and Ballet Legere in River Forest, IL, where I performed in the Nutcracker for five years.

About Darcy

Hi, there! My name is Darcy and I am a teaching artist in Chicago. I've been teaching and tutoring for nine years and I'm a graduate of Northwestern University. I love to get to know people, and I pride myself in being personable, adaptable to different learning styles, and an upbeat, positive person.

I teach in the city of Chicago and at some Evanston schools; unfortunately I am not able to travel beyond the reach of the CTA for lessons. Note: my listed availability begins September 1, 2015. Want to start sooner? Just let me know, we can figure out scheduling until then!

I teach a vari
ety of ages, levels, and subjects: I currently teach drama to kindergarteners and high school English classes, clarinet to middle school students, ballet and jazz to teenagers, and tap to adults older than I am. I consistently teach large classes and several one- or two- person private lessons. I invest a lot in my students and want to get to know each of them personally, whether they are five or 55.

A little about my background in the subjects I teach:

My life-long love of reading, writing and language prepared me to succeed academically and on standardized tests. I became a National Merit Scholar and then a cum laude graduate of Northwestern University. I've had several writing jobs and internships, and have published numerous articles and a long-term column. Experience matters when it comes to knowing how to draft creative content while maintaining impeccable grammar, style, and structure.

I grew up training seriously in dance, especially ballet and tap. I studied ballet, pointe, tap, modern and jazz on a scholarship at the School of Performing Arts in Naperville, IL, and performed with their award-winning performing and competing dance ensemble for seven years. I then completed the choreography program at Northwestern University, and served as Artistic Director of Tonik Tap ensemble.

I come from a musical family, and I played as the first chair clarinetist in my high school's band and orchestra as well as the solo clarinetist with the DuPage Youth Symphony. By studying privately and attending summer programs I was able to refine my technical abilities and musicianship, winning awards at solo competitions and performing in recitals. When I began performing professionally in Chicago musical theatre productions at age eleven, my musical background served me well as I began vocal training.

I'm lucky to now get to do what I love for a living and I hope to work with you in one of the subjects listed here!

With each of my students, we begin with a discussion about goals and expectations on both sides. I want to know what your goals are with lessons. Do you want to score in a certain range on a standardized test? Refine your technique in music or dance? Learn something new just for fun? I am happy to help you work toward whatever goals you have (and really, it should always be fun).

From me, you can expect commitment, flexibility, clear communication, and positivity. Feel free to ask for references if you'd like!
