Students can expect a teacher that addresses every single aspect of learning orchestral upright bass: from honing bow technique, to left-hand formation and fingering choices, to reading musical notation, interpreting music and learning rhythm.

My goal is to help students develop a technical foundation on the bass for playing just about any kind of music that they are interested in, and to support students with practicing tips for areas in their playing where they want to improve. My specialty is symphony orchestra training, so I primarily use both the Essential Elements for Strings books and Suzuki Bass School series at the beginning, and then later as students make progress, I begin to introduce standard orchestral repertoire, sonatas, and concertos written for the bass. I have been teaching since August 2016 and so far I have helped students get into All-States, ensembles at the New England Conservatory Preparatory Division and Berklee College of Music, Districts/Regional ...

My daughter worked with a few instructors over the years, but not until she started working with Darren did she truly grow as a bassist and a musician. Darren is a very dedicated and knowledgeable teacher who cares greatly about his students. My daughter always finds him to be kind, patient and motivating. She has been able to move up youth orchestra levels each year while working with Darren. He fully understands the audition process and is able to successfully guide his students. I highly recommend Darren as an instructor for any level!

Darren is a very good teacher. Would recommend him to any bassist beginner or advanced.

My 11 year old has attended an after school music program in our district for a few years playing the double bass. When Covid hit, she was no longer able to continue learning, but her music teacher recommended her to audition for a selective music program at Berklee College of Music. That's when I reached out to Darren via his website to see if he could work with my child for the 8 week period to prepare for the online audition submission.

Darren worked with her every week on a completely new song, introduced great techniques that enabled her to learn quickly and develop new skills. Those 8 weeks were very productive as my she learned the entire song, did the audition and was accepted into the Berklee music program. Darren is a very knowledgeable and dedicated music instructor and I am grateful to him for helping my daughter get into a selective music program. The online lessons from Darren are exceptional. You will not be disappointed with his instructions.

Abbey is the real deal. She is the musician’s musician, the teacher’s teacher. As an instructor, she brings enthusiasm, patience, and thoughtfulness to every lesson. Coming into her tutorage as an intermediate level student, she has pushed and inspired me to be a more thoughtful performer and composer. Abbey draws from her deep well of theory and technique to create very practical exercises to fit one’s individual needs. I highly recommend her instruction for students of any level.
Andrew
Abbey is a great musician and she's everything you could want in a music teacher: inspiring, patient, thorough, and absolutely aware of just who she's teaching and what and how that student needs to learn. She's the best.
John
I highly recommend Abbey to the serious bass player. Highly qualified with a Master's Degree, and with a natural talent for teaching, Abbey is one of the best teachers I've ever seen and motivates me to do my best. Always making sure you understand what's being taught and tailoring the lessons to your individual needs and aspirations. Abbey can find problems even you might not be aware of and helps work out a solution.

My high school daughter has received trumpet lessons from Jonathan for over a year. He is an excellent instructor, very knowledgeable and patient. As a school teacher, he knows how to work with kids in a way that gives him an advantage over a non-teacher performing artist. We've done lessons both in person and online. I'd highly recommend Jonathan to any parent looking to have their middle school/high school student take private lessons.

"José Carrion was my first private teacher as I began to seriously pursue bass in seventh grade. Not only did our work together allow me to reach top positions in Allstate and success in college auditions, but his giving nature and friendship allowed me musical and personal growth beyond what one could ever expect from weekly lessons. To this day, I perform in orchestras in Texas and in the solo field have even performed at Carnegie Hall thanks to starting my bass career with Mr. Carrion. I could not recommend someone higher to teach lessons on the double bass."

"My experience with Cory has been excellent. He is a good teacher who knows how to keep me going and understands my goals. I have temporarily with- drawn from the program as the erratic nature of my life and travel requirements makes it difficult for me to schedule reliably. Also, some problems with the communication software have, at times, made the learning difficult. Please understand that my decision to stop is in no way a reflection on Cory or his teaching ability. I will be glad to re-connect with him when conditions permit."
