The trumpet is one of the most demanding yet rewarding instruments. A dominant voice in classical and jazz; the trumpet can be a section or solo instrument.

Vince began playing trumpet in 1998. He attended lessons at elementary school. Vince soon won principle chair in school ensembles; later with select county and state wide bands. He competed in annual solo competitions performing classical and jazz trumpet throughout middle and high school.

In 2003, Vince began studying trumpet privately with Mark Klose; later with John Maguda. Vince primarily studied from methods including: Arban's Complete Conservatory Method, Schlossberg's Daily Drills and Technical Studies, Clarke's Technical Studies, and Stamp's Warm-Ups & Studies. Vince also studied solo repertoire by Hindemith, Haydn, and Kennan among others.

While cultivating classical foundation, Vince developed jazz chops by listening, transcribing, and studying many jazz greats including Louis Armstrong, Clifford Brown, Donald

About Vince

Vince privately teaches trumpet, guitar, electric bass guitar, arranging, composition, music theory, ear training, and improvisation to students of all ages and levels.

“Basically he’s the go-to cross-genre horn-blowing utility man of the Philly scene” (John Vettese, The Key). Vince is a professional trumpeter, arranger, composer, and multi-instrumentalist. Though firmly rooted in jazz, he is comfortable with a wide variety of genres including rock, soul, funk, folk, classical, and electronic.

Vince earned the Masters of Music degree in Jazz Performance from the University of the Arts; and earned the Bachelor of Science in Music degree concentrating in Jazz Studies and Theory & Composition from the State University of New York (SUNY) at New Paltz. He studied trumpet through undergraduate and graduate school with Rebecca Coupe Franks

, Dennis Wasko, and John Swana. Vince has also attended master classes held by Randy Brecker, Matt Gallagher, Michael Abene, Craig Morris, Steve Wilson, Claudio Roditi, Pat Martino, Malcolm McNab, Matthew Shipp, Scott Holbert, John Abercrombie, Jeff Curnow, and Alison Balsom.

Vince first began teaching music in 2006 as the trumpet instructor at Silver Creek Central School. He directed trumpet master classes for high school students. Vince later took on various private students teaching trumpet, guitar, electric bass, improvisation, arrangement and composition. While earning his Master of Music at the University of the Arts, he served as the trumpet department intern and was responsible for teaching private trumpet lessons, preparing transcriptions for class materials and live performances, and proctoring music theory exams. Also at UArts, Vince was a teaching assistant for the Freshman Jazz Improvisation class for which he conducted sectionals, administered exams, and offered critiques regarding inventiveness of improvisations. In 2017 he taught a jazz improvisation masterclass at Schenectady County Community College.

Since each student approaches music differently; Vince tailors his teaching to fit students' approaches. He asks each student, "What do you want to accomplish?" Together, they set short and long term goals. Vince believes a strong technical foundation leads to freer ease of artistic expression. His students receive a wholistic approach to music applicable to whatever instrument they choose.

Vince’s original music has been described as “a contemporary instance of fusion done right” (Matthew Aquilin, All About Jazz). His next album, The Nook, is a full length straight-ahead jazz album featuring John Swana. The music harks back to Miles Davis' first great quintet. The Nook was preceded by Sound Plan (2017), Live at PafA (2017), Syzygy (2014), and Syzygy: Remix (2014). Vince is currently self producing four more solo albums. One unreleased composition was recently featured in the Philadelphia Real Book Volume 1.

Vince has appeared as a side man on 40+ albums. He is the trumpeter and arranger with the York Street Hustle, the John Byrne Band, and You Do You. Vince founded the Philly Phatness horn section, which has recorded with regional, national, and international artists, and on film soundtracks. He serves as Musical Director and bassist for Phloyd: a Philadelphia Pink Floyd tribute band. "His horn croons and wahs with touches of funk or blues, bridging the futuristic digital age with a snazzy sense of classic cool" (Geno Thackara, All About Jazz).

Quotes:

"Vince proves himself a very creative composer. I look forward to hearing more from this upcoming composer & instrumentalist." (Fred "Rock Steady Freddie" Reiter)

"Vince plays his horn with creative passion and soul, his tone is very open and full these two combined make him one of the leading up and coming young jazz trumpet players of today." (Rebecca Coupe Franks)

"I've had the great pleasure of working with Vince as an arranger and writer. His music explores many styles and directions, and is always well crafted. He has an original and distinctive voice as a player, an arranger, and a writer. Such dedicated talent deserves to be heard, and I'm sure we'll be hearing a lot from Vince in the future." Playing a brass instrument is a physically demanding, high concentration activity that can lead to immense joy and fulfillment when approached correctly. I offer all my students practical and musical ways to master the trumpet that will lead to life long enjoyment. I will equip you with fundamentals for healthy practicing and can offer lessons in several styles, including jazz, classical, and salsa. Additionally, I have helped students prepare for school, district, and regional auditions.

About Ethan

MUSIC LESSONS: Whether I am playing salsa, solo classical piano, in a jazz ensemble, or a concert band, I am ALWAYS having fun doing what I love, and I want you to have the same experience. After moving to Philadelphia ten years ago to study at Temple University, where I received my Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance, I have had many great opportunities to play all types of music with all types of people. While my passions are in jazz music, composing, and arranging, my varied experience helps me pass on the fundamentals necessary to becoming a great musician while also adapting to your goals, needs, and musical preferences.

*** Lesson Details ***
I aim for students to leave each lesson eager to practice and explore, and to come back with questions and stories of their progress. To that end, I work hard to tailor lessons to every

individuals interests and goals. Sometimes this means arranging, transcribing a recording, or even composing something new for my students. Additionally, in each lesson, I balance technical skills, ear training, and music theory to assure that each student walks away a complete musician, all structured around your musical goals.

*** Travel Equipment ***
The student must provide their own instrument and assigned method books. I will provide a music stand if necessary, and other useful instructional tools (metronome, tuner, etc.)

*** Home Studio ***
I offer lessons in my home located within walking distance of Broad Street in South Philadelphia, near the Tasker-Morris subway stop. I am equipped with a well-playing upright piano and plenty of space for musical activities. There is ample street parking in the area during the afternoon and early evening, and our living room is available to parents while students take their lesson. Students who travel to me for lessons gain all the benefits of performing on a piano, rather than an electric keyboard, and have access to many more resources that I am able to offer from my home, such as recordings and method books.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize teaching "late starters" (teens and adults new to piano) fundamentals in music in a fun and exciting way that will have you playing the music you love quickly.

For brass instruments, I am able to help brand new beginners build up their sound and facility through simple exercises that will have them astounded by their progress.

MATH: I use my years of classroom teaching and Master's degree in math education as experience to help guide you to the success you are seeking. I am able to tailor sessions to your specific needs with a few key points in mind:

- helping you catch-up, while also preparing you for what is ahead
- balancing practice with conceptual knowledge and application
- using research-based techniques to maximize your learning

I am a patient teacher, and well-equipped to explain tough topics in multiple ways. I like to use visuals and objects with simple examples to help my students really understand a concept before we try harder material. Total understanding and confidence is my goal for you.

My personal interests in mathematics are problem solving, puzzles, and combinatorics (think "How many different outfits can I make with all the clothes in my closet?"). If you're looking for an addicting puzzle to try, I suggest KenKen to all my students.

I believe that it is very important to have a good musical foundation in addition to playing the trumpet. We will go over aspects of music theory such as scales and key signatures. We will go over the fundamentals of playing trumpet and use exercises from various different method books. We will also go in depth into any styles that you are interested in. I will ask you to listen to recordings of great trumpet players so you can model their sound. Lessons will be rewarding and fun!

About Matt

I attended West Chester University from 2011-2015 and graduated with my bachleor's in music education. I performed in the marching band, symphonic band, wind ensemble, jazz ensembles, various trumpet ensembles, and a brass quintet. One of my trumpet ensembles made it to the semifinals in the National Trumpet Competition. I backed up various world famous trumpet artists during the International Trumpet Guild Conference at Valley Forge in 2014 such as Bobby Shew, Randy Brecker, Tine Thing Helseth, Canadian Brass, and many others. I took lessons from Robert Skoniczin and Jean Christophe Dobrzelewski during my time at WCU.

I can teach any style that you are interested in and can take students of all ages. I believe it is important to have a good musical foundation so we will go over music theory as well in lessons. I have extensive experie

nce teaching trumpet, guitar, piano, bass, ukulele, and saxophone. We will play whichever style of music you prefer. Lessons will be fun!

I've played trumpet since I've been 10 years old. I've grown up playing with and without braces, for weddings, church services, formal marching bands, college tours, and local put orchestras.

I focus on having fun while also aiming to refine technique and tone quality of this amazing instrument.

About Shelley

Teaching for the past 10 years has brought joy fun and experience. I love sharing my passion for reading and literacy with students through a variety of techniques. I love to apply things from now (today's song hits, current events, trends, etc) in to what I'm teaching.

I am a mom of four small boys all under 2nd grade. I love theater, movies, running outdoors, reading, and teaching. I am a positive person who aims to find the GOOD in ALL.

Everyone CAN learn. It's not about being the best... It's about doing your best. You may not know something NOW but you will if you keep your mind to it. The work you put in to something, always pays off.

Private Trumpet Teacher

Relatable and experienced Trombone and Brass teacher looking for beginner/intermediate level students! All ages welcome, no one is too young or too old to learn as long as you like music and want to learn your instrument. We will set goals together based on how YOU want to sound and what music YOU want to play. I will do my best to offer you the knowledge and experience I have while relating it to other concepts/experiences you already possess. In lessons, you can expect to work on tone, embouchure, breathing, rhythms, lip slurs, etc.

Once we have a handle on the basics, I'll arrange music hand tailored for my student based on what music they like to listen to! I've done music for students all ages and many genres. A few examples of favorites are The Polar Express movie soundtrack music, Back to the Future soundtrack, Bad guy by Billie Ellish, We Are Number One from Lazy Town, and many others.

I hope you're excited about these lessons as much as I am because nothing makes me smile ...

About Steven

Hello, I'm Steven! I've been a band geek since 6th grade, and am currently 21 years old. I started playing trombone back then and have since picked up and learned every brass instrument I could get my hands on. I've played with bands of all shapes and sizes, including Symphonic, Marching, Jazz, Rock, New Orleans parade, and more. I've played in school settings with Osborne Middle School, GACS High School and Kennesaw State University and in public performances with bands like The Black Sheep Ensemble (New Orleans style parade music), The Windy City (Chicago cover band), and Trombone Choirs. My favorite genre since middle school has been jazz but I have many close seconds in Funk, Rock, Pop, Chamber music, etc.

I started teaching after class in High School with younger students that wanted help with their playing tests. Over time I realiz

ed that I could relate musical concepts with other interests and experiences to help students understand them more quickly and with a better grasp. Around the same time, I also realized that students like to play the music they are interested in. This is fine if a student likes the music the band is playing, but sometimes I find that the music being played in typical Band class might not quite match the music the student is interested in.

I pride myself in offering personalized music to my students that gives them something THEY want to play, rather than what the band wants them to play. I have found that this encourages individuality not only as a player but also as a person. At the end of the day, my main goal is to get my students to the place where they can play the music they want to play with the sound they are looking for. It's always a pleasure for me to meet musicians and I look forward to meeting you and helping you play your favorite music!
