I teach old-time clawhammer banjo in the festival style, with an emphasis on backing up fiddle tunes.

I founded and played banjo for the first two records by Ragged Mountain String Band, and was awarded 5th place in the banjo competition at the Highland County Fiddler's Convention in Monterrey, Virginia. My approach to the instrument is an attempt at synthesizing Round Peak, African-American, and Festival styles.

About Dan

I've been playing music since I was five years old (so, over 35 years now), beginning my 'stage career' as a saxophonist in school bands, then playing guitars, keyboards, accordions, mandolins, banjo, and bass in a variety of live acts throughout my adult life. I've made (as of January 2020) 16

I have been playing banjo for about four years now as a supplement to my guitar playing. It has a been a real joy learning the different styles and techniques.

About Joe

I absolutely love teaching music! After over 20 years of teaching, performing, writing, and recording in all styles/genres, it continues to be a great adventure. It is a joy to pass this on to others...especially seeing my students that never touched the instrument going on to be very proficient

My first lesson with Zach was great! 5 stars. He asked the right questions as to what aI am looking to do. And we quickly came up with a lesson plan that with the right amount of work in my part will get me headed in the right direction. Zach does a great job of making his students feel comfortable and good about their abilities.

I have been playing and teaching banjo since 2006, and I'm always very excited to introduce new students to this unique instrument. I focus on the "Scruggs-style" method of playing 5-string banjo, and we'll work on techniques used in common bluegrass and folk tunes. As you advance, I'll help you in creating your own banjo solo breaks.

So far so good. Very patient as mistakes after mistake was made. Corrected quite a few mistakes I was making so that my habits would be good habits from the start. Let me talk to myself as I messed up and complimented me when I was on the right track.

Great lesson! Thanks!
Robert C.
complete novice; adult student. First lesson very relaxed. Excellent blend through-out lesson of questions and information my goals and background as well as instructor's goals for me and his background. First "technical" part of lesson was manageable and care taken by Lyle to make sure I understood what was being presented. I left the first lesson feeling this would be a good fit between instructor and student

"Mike is a super musician himself, but he has met me at my true-beginning level. Mike has a way of making you feel very comfortable while imparting proper techniques and advice. He is very patient with my beginning fumbles, while challenging me to make some progress each week. I really recommend him as a teacher. In three weeks, I have three songs I am working on and four finger rolls, with advice on how to learn to be more smooth when chording. This pace was adjusted for myself, as he will adjust to your own current level. You get some funny stories too (always helps)."

"This produst was a great way to find a banjo teacher, when we had no idea where to even start looking.

Mrs. Fegan is a great instructor, who can explain things on all levels to make sure your child is truly learning. She has a fun disposition and you can tell she really enjoys teaching. My son loves her, learns more than just the banjo at lessons. She is very patient, yet expects my son to do his part too. We have been with her for a year, and now my son has added Baritone lessons as well, because of the encouragement and support, and respect she gives my son. Best teacher we have ever had! I truly believe Mrs. Fegan could teach my son anything, because she teaches the way a person seems to learn at their own ability."

Are Heavy Metal Banjos The Next Big Thing?

Loud, jangly, and twangy, the banjo is an instrument with a distinctive voice that immediately evokes the spirit of the American South. Long a mainstay of bluegrass music, banjos have recently been incorporated into pop music as well by bands like Mumford and Sons. And, if YouTube trends are any indication, it looks like the banjo is making another genre shift! A pack of viral videos featuring banjo covers of hard rock classics are making the rounds and proving that banjos can shred just a …
