I can help beginners get started or coach advanced students who are preparing for auditions.

About Thomas
Thomas J. W. is an active music teacher, composer, adjudicator, and clinician in the greater Philadelphia area. He has over fifteen years experience as a concert band director, marching band director, jazz improvisation instructor, choral director, private instructor, and marching drill writer. His directing career has included small rural band programs, small metro programs, large high-achieving suburban programs, and non-profit youth bands. In addition to his band compositions, he also has over forty unpublished vocal arrangements to his credit, most written for use with collegiate men's a cappella groups. Thomas taught over 600 online and local private music lessons in 2016.

Thomas has a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education from The Pennsylvania State University. He holds a teaching certificate in the states of Pennsylvania
and New Jersey and has taught at the secondary level in both states. In addition to both instrumental and choral ensembles at Penn State, Thomas was a student leader in the Penn State Blue Band and a member of the brass section of the Cadets of Bergen County Drum and Bugle Corps in 1993 and 1994. He served as an Associate Director of the Warren Junior Military Band of Youngstown, Ohio from 1995 to 2005. He also served as a visual staff member for the renowned North Penn Marching Knights of Lansdale, PA for one season in 2004.

He is a current adjudicator with Drum Corps International and Cavalcade of Bands. He is a member of MENC, PMEA, NJMEA, ASCAP, CASA, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and the National Band Association. He appeared in the Marquis Who's Who Among American Educators in 2004 and 2005, an honor rarely bestowed upon teachers, as students who appear in the Who's Who Among American High School Students must nominate them. He currently is a music teacher at the Center for Performing and Fine Arts of the PA Leadership Charter School in West Chester, PA and resides in Downingtown, PA with his wife and two sons.

Thomas will happily work with students on the autism spectrum or students with ADD.

*** Lesson Details ***
My lessons are tailored to the needs and interests of each student. If a student is involved in school music ensembles, we will work with their lesson books from school in addition to material outside of the books, including SmartMusic, Noteflight, and teacher-created materials. We will focus on building proper tone production and individual technique - something that often is difficult to learn in a large ensemble setting.

I am capable of starting a beginner student on any band instrument including percussion, any classical string instrument (violin, viola, cello, string bass), and piano. I can begin a student on drum set and work with them through their first method book, but I would then recommend they find a specialized drum set teacher after a period of six to twelve months.

For advanced students, I work from selected conservatory etude books on developing advanced skills and can work with students on audition pieces for honors bands/orchestras or college auditions.

My lessons are a half-hour once a week, with the option of working for 45 minutes or 60 minutes.

*** Specialties ***
music, band, orchestra, flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, saxophone, trumpet, french horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba, violin, viola, cello, string bass, piano, Percussion

Playing the horn has been a life long passion of mine and has been both rewarding and demanding. It has kept me on the road and enabled me to meet wonderful people from all walks of life as well as great musicians and artists who have been truly inspiring. They have strengthened my belief in a close knit world wide family of generous and creative human beings striving to change the world for the better. As a performer and a teacher, I am involved in numerous projects with young musicians and artists, and I would love to share the knowledge I've learned from my teachers, and experience as performer with music lovers at any level, from beginner to the advanced student.

About Trevor
Playing the horn and sharing the joy of music is one of my greatest passions in life. As a teacher, I am committed to nurturing my students’ talents and abilities. I aim to help each one recognize and reach their fullest potential, and help them find and discover new opportunities and possibilities for their musical lives.

I love to keep my students motivated and focused in a very positive and creative atmosphere. I am here to instill my students desire to make great music, and develop, grow, and achieve a greater confidence in themselves as performers.

My students can expect to improve week to week in their technique and music making. Every student has different specific needs, and it is my job to develop a custom tailored approach to ensure their needs are met.

My teaching methods are derived from my own experience as a performer, a
nd from my training at Interlochen Arts Academy, The Juilliard School, and in Europe, handed down to me from my teachers including Radovan Vlatković, Frøydis Ree Wekre, and Hermann Baumann.

I teach music students of all different ages and experience levels. My goal for new or beginning students is to apply solid foundational techniques and foster a disciplined daily practice routine to ensure their progress on the horn accelerates. In order to become a great horn player for many years and maintain a beautiful sound, it is essential to have a strong solid foundation and daily routine. Together, we will find a suitable warm up method, as well as daily exercises and etudes in order to develop a strong embouchure, unlock their own individual sound, and play as relaxed as possible.

For the intermediate level or advanced students, I work on higher level etudes and technical exercises, and the building and refinement of the solo horn repertoire.

I am also glad to assist with school/orchestra audition preparation, and any other specific needs or goals the student is interested in or requests.

While my personal passion and musical endeavor is the French Horn, I am open to assisting other musicians and instrumentalists interested in developing their musical skills.

I look forward to meeting you and helping you to become a better musician!

Make the french horn sing as we work on your all-region material, your college audition work, or your festival music. We will also work on tone development, range, and finger technique.

About Matthew
Hi, I am Matt Shewmaker. I am a band director in the Fort Smith, AR area. I am in my 7th year teaching band and love every minute of it. I have recently decided to return to teaching private lessons, and would love to help you with your auditions, festival music, AP music theory exams, or just learn some skills on becoming a better musician. Outside of the audition music, we continually work tone production, range, and confidence on any brass instrument. In college I had a small guitar studio as well. Some of those guitar students have gone on to study at the collegiate level and gig around town today! I am comfortable teaching at all levels, but my expertise is centered around student development at the middle school to high school level.

June 2012 - June 2015 I was the head band director of Waldron High School. We won several awards
through our marching and concert band program. I also ran after school lessons in which many students made our region honor band.

June 2015 - Present
I am currently the head director at Trinity Junior High in Fort Smith. I run a 7-9 band program that includes both marching and concert band seasons. Our student involvement is quite high as our band program serves about 50% of our total student population.

I have been teaching horn for 8 years at the beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels. And I have studied with some of the best orchestral horn players around. Jim Smelser, second horn of the Chicago Symphony, was my primary teacher and I have performed along side him in that orchestra. I specialize in technical issues, but I always put emphasis on the music. Regardless of your skill level I feel that we can work together to get you to any level of musicianship you desire!

About payton
I am a freelance horn player and I have been the horn for 15 years. However, I have been involved in music for my entire life. I earned my Bachelor's degree from East Carolina University and I just recently received my Master's degree from Depaul University where I studied with Jim Smelser, second horn of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. While I was still in North Carolina, I was on the substitute horn list for the North Carolina Symphony as well as assistant/utility horn in the Chamber Orchestra of the Triangle. I performed in various other freelance groups in the Raleigh area and played regularly as second horn in the NC Ballet Academy's production of "The Nutcracker." While in School I was a finalist in multiple solo and concerto competitions, including the NC Symphony's young artist competition. Since moving to Chicago and studying wit
h Jim Smelser, I have had the opportunity to perform with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra which was an absolute dream come true.

Besides performing, I have been teaching for 6 years at various skill levels. I enjoy teaching and working with students to figure out the best ways for them to learn new skills. I have my own tricks that I like to use to fix technical issues, but I like to think of lessons as a more collaborative process. I am dedicated to my students and will do everything I can to help fix any problems, whether it be technical, musical, or even personal, I want to help.

Music is such a passion for me and few things make me happier than playing my horn. More than anything, I want to be able to share this passion with anyone who is interested in learning!

I am an avid brass performer and teacher in the greater Baltimore area, having played for over a decade. In lessons, we will work out of some of the most trusted method books, discuss fundamental playing techniques in an accessible and easy-to-understand way, and search for unique solutions to individual problems as I tailor my teaching method to your learning style. All ages are welcome.

About Zachary
Hello! My name is Zachary (or Zac for short) and I am a Baltimore-based brass performer and teacher. I have been playing euphonium and other brass instruments for 14 years. Currently, I am in my final year as a music education student at Towson University, where I study euphonium with US Navy musician James Hicks. In addition to euphonium, I am quite proficient on both trombone and tuba, and have taught trumpet and horn as well.

Currently, I play euphonium in the Towson University Symphonic Band and Towson University Tuba Euphonium Ensemble, trombone in a folk-rock style band, and am an avid solo artist. I also have two years of experience as a nationally touring member of the Troopers Drum & Bugle Corps. In addition to these experiences, I have performed with the Cadets2 Drum & Bugle Corps, the Baltimore Ravens Marching Band, and th
e Bushwackers Drum & Bugle Corps. In 2013, I was a recipient of the United States Marine Corps Semper Fidelis Award for Musical Excellence.

Outside of performing, I am an avid teacher in the Baltimore area and beyond. I have worked as an instructor with various high school bands, including Perry Hall High School, Rockville High School, and Urbana High School.

Zac taught me how to properly perform an aria in front of a whole lot of important people that I was stressed about. He gave me some excellent pointers on how to work with a pianist. His knowledge of music and his experience in performance has certainly shaped the way I perceive my own performances ever since that lesson.

As a musician, Zac is above and beyond talented. Because of his proficiency and excellence, he offers great insight and helpful hints on how to play properly and with support, two extremely important parts of being a musician. Lastly, it is quite obvious what music means to him. His passion is inspiring, and makes me want to continue to pursue and practice my instrument. His lessons helped me develop from a second part to a first part, enabling me to play higher and more challenging parts for my band. Knowing that I was able to leave better than I started makes myself feel lucky and appreciative that I was able to take lessons with a person like Zac. Overall, one of the best music instructors I have had the pleasure of working with.
