percussion and tempo recognition. techniques and style variation

About Rene
Knowing at the age of 5 that music was my life, by being brought up surrounded by praise music and gospel, my early exposure to music helped me to find every Instrument and style just my thing! I wanted to play everything and learn all aspects of music. I started with singing in the children's choir and then developed into piano and music theory. At the age of 12 I began to learn classical guitar, and at 15 took on various styles like Flamenco, Jazz and Rock. I graduated from High School having played in the school band achieving recognition In national Institutions Like IAJE (International Association for Jazz Education) and state band finals. I was also composing from a very early age, and at 18 released my first album (self-titled) which can still be heard and purchased today through various music outlets, since i have released over 15
albums with various ensembles and bands. In college I already knew from my previous experience that I wanted to teach and pass on the joy that music brought to my life. I studied Music Theory and Jazz and finished my degree in Music Education. I have been teaching all in all for about 14 yrs. And I have enjoyed every minute I have spent with my students learning as much from them, as them from me. I am looking forward to meeting new and eager students who really want to bring their inner music out to share with the rest of us music aficionados! and develop their skills to the peak of their abilities.

*** Lesson Details ***
My teaching method ranges depending on the student. I believe in my experience that everyone learns differently, therefore everyone develops at their own pace. I try to find key strengths in each student and expose this to their advantage, using their abilities to further develop their skills, this method has shown the most promising results and students usually find themselves playing and performing just a couple of months after their first lessons. Part of my method involves a lot of performance and recital opportunities to help break any fears and inhibitions a student may bring with them. Music is about sharing, so an early exposure to this method helps to strengthen and stabilize a core acceptance of a students style and path, giving them and those close to them a very clear picture of their development and achievements.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Has all instruments at both his home and college studio

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide lesson material, song charts and a progression scale. I require student to have an Instrument and recommended technique literature.

*** Specialties ***
My classical training began in High School with Influences in Segovia, and Romero I studied classical for 4 yrs. and trained in Jazz and Improvisation with performances In Big Band and group ensemble. Also sang and played in the school gospel choir.

****Personal Statement*****

If you needed a reason

There is no question that music touches us instantly and activates images, emotions and memories that linger with us throughout our lives. As a casual listener or an obsessive music elitist, there are times in our lives when we get blown away by a sound so unique our entire body vibrates and resonates with the touch of something out of this world. I can honestly say when this happens to me I feel as close to a spiritual connection than anything I have experienced otherwise. I believe it is these exact events that have triggered my need to be completely involved in the making, performing and consuming of music. The creative process, to me, is the single obvious reason we exist in this world. We create and share, learn and interpret, build on previous ideas and inspire others to perfect upon this process. It is no doubt a very humbling experience to realize you are part of it all. During this process you come to realize how important you are as an Individual, how there is no other vessel like you in this world, nor has there ever been or ever will. You are here now and your voice, your talent, your gift is an instrument to the great choir of the human spirit. No one but you can relate this, a reason to be, to create, to give.

I've been teaching drums and percussion for 10 years and my students have gone on to be accepted into top ensembles, record and produce tracks of their own, and have performance careers. Within the first few lessons, you'll be able to play basic rhythms on the drum set, and start recognizing different stylistic patterns. You'll also develop a strong sense of time. As time goes on you'll be able to play along to any song just by listening, and even create your own drum groove to new music! I specialize in rock, pop, and funk styles, typically use Joel Rothman's drum books as well as my own PDFs. I love working with students of all ages and experience levels and I can't wait to meet you!

About Zachary
My name is Zach L. I am a professional musician in the Miami area. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Jazz Guitar Performance from the University of Miami. I am a multiple Downbeat-award-winning guitarist and have been drumming for the past 13 years. I have headlined multiple international tours and received both the Duncan Nelson Scholarship and the Davidson Scholarship at the University of Miami. Furthermore, I am also an accomplished composer and arranger with my works featured by groups such as the Steve Miller Band and the Henry Mancini Orchestra. Lastly, I have held a teaching position as the Professor of Improvised Music at the Narnia Arts Academy International Summer Course in Central Italy.

*** Lesson Details ***
Students' lessons are tailored to their individual needs. I don't teach out of a book (though I do use books to supplement
material when helpful), so students will only be learning what *they* need to be learning next, based on their unique blend of skill, experience, and curiosity. With that in mind, here are some topics on which we tend to focus.

Guitar Lessons:
-Proper Technique. (How to hold a pick. Proper ways to apply pressure to the strings with the left hand. Tension-free technique to prevent injury and strain.)
-Chord Formations. (Bar chords, Power chords, Open chords, Triads and inversions, CAGED system chords, Seventh chords, Advanced jazz voicing, Chords in alternate tuning.)
-Scales/Arpeggios. (Proper fingering to build technical skill. Three note per string scale forms. Conventional scale forms. Cross-fretboard patterns. Seeing arpeggios from different scale degrees. Pattern manipulation.)
-Reading Music. (One position reading. Multi-position reading. Sight reading practice. Understanding rhythmic variation. Ledger line studies. Dollahon 10th position method for sight reading.)
-Repertoire. (Songs in genre(s) of preference. Learning to play songs from favorite artists. Learn to accompany yourself if you sing.)
-Ear Training. (Hearing melodic phrases. Identifying chords. Transcription projects. Learning to "play by ear".)
-Rhythm Training. (Differentiate between different rhythms. Metronome work. Keeping solid time. Develop ability to clap/strum/pick a variety of rhythms with good time.)

*** Studio Equipment ***
Two small jazz amplifiers, five guitars ranging from acoustic to electric to archtops, and an 88-key electric piano for music theory lessons.

*** Travel Equipment ***

Zach has been giving guitar lessons to my eleven-year-old daughter in our home for the past few weeks and we have been so pleased with his instruction. He is punctual, professional, and best of all extremely patient. I would recommend Zach to anyone I know looking for music lessons, especially children, his patience and passion is a gift. Not to even mention how talented he is himself as a musician!!!

If you need a guitar teacher, I highly recommend Zack. He has been my teacher for 3 years and we never run out of lessons. Zack is an expert in music theory, critiquing songs, rhythm and melody. From a novice I have improved to a good player under his instruction. Give him a try I am sure you will be pleased.

I've been teaching Music for 5 plus years and my students have gone on to accomplish great things. My goal and challenge for every student is to teach them how to play, read and listen to music. This will enable them the ability to play any song and any style of music. I specialize in Jazz, R&B and Classical. Typically I learn my students leaning habits whether its hands on or visual and their attention span, so I can't effectively teach my students. I Can't wait to meet you!

Experienced drum teacher of 7 years! My lesson plan is simple : 1. we warm up with basic beats + rudiments + paradiddles, 2. we focus on rhythm + proper technique, and 3. we play a song that incorporates the techniques we're working on.

The time devoted to each portion of the lesson is totally adjustable. You will learn what you want to learn at your own pace.

I could not ask for more in a teacher. Ryan is amazing in every way. He has been teaching my 4 year old son the drums for nearly a year. When my son started lessons, he was actually below the minimum age for students, but he shared a passion for music that Ryan was willing to cultivate and be patient with.

Ryan is versatile in his teaching methods, creative, open, patient. Teaching a young student, Ryan adjusted to teaching music reading fundamentals with colors and shapes. He also figured out ways to correct, critique and build all the while building a young child's confidence.

Ryan provides a written evaluation of our son annually and has him prepare for two public recitals a year. Ryan integrates modern technology into the lessons to quickly provide feedback and create customized beats and tempos to practice to.

Above all, Ryan smiles and laughs. He makes every lesson pleasant and we treasure him, truly.

I'm a beginning drums teacher and primary drummer in my home church, as well as in my folk rock band The Fortune Tellers. My teaching style is entirely student-oriented, and I adapt my material based on what you want to learn. I often use my music theory background as a supplement, and occasionally I will give handouts and homework. I am primarily experienced in church music, but I have played drums in rock and punk bands and jazz ensembles, but I'll gladly teach you any style you are interested in. Students will need their own drum set and gear, and a notebook or binder.

About Dillon
Hello and welcome to my teacher profile! My name is Dillon S.

I am a music and art teacher, and I have earned my Associate's degree in Music Education at MDC with a focus on jazz guitar. I have a diverse experience in different genres of music (rock, pop, punk/metal, jazz, praise & worship/gospel, and others). I have also sung and played guitar, drums, and bass in numerous bands throughout the years (currently, drummer/percussionist in folk-rock band The Fortune Tellers in Miami, FL).

I have always had a deep love for art, and am currently working on my Bachelor of Science in K-12 Art Education. I have a particular interest in figure drawing/portraiture (charcoal, graphite, India ink), landscape and still life painting (acrylic and oil paint), and both digital and film photography.

I am hoping to improve my teaching skills throug
h this platform and impart knowledge onto others. I am laid-back and a kid at heart, and I find it important to teach with a sense of humor. For the record, I'm also a huge geek. I enjoy video games, superheroes, sci-fi, fantasy, animals (I have two cats), board games, cartoons/anime, technology/science... I also love traveling! If you're into something, feel free to talk to me about it, I love getting to know what you're passionate about!

Drumming is challenging, and rewarding, but It's also supposed to be FUN ... it is for me, and I want my students to have some of that fun, too! I've played drums for 38 years and have taught since 1992. I use a wide variety of professional experiences along with my education background to help students of all ages reach their personal goals, whether it's to just play along with their favorite top-40 tunes, reach for more advanced music, or get ahead in their school's music program. I highly encourage feedback and student input regarding what we will work on together!

About Luc
After drumming for almost 40 years, I feel like I've nearly done it all, having played played Rock, small and big group Jazz, Classic R&B/Soul, Fusion, Funk, Folk, Reggae/World Music, Top-40, Heavy Rock, Classic and Contemporary Country, Blues, Electronic, Theater, and Cinematic/Soundtrack music.

I was self-taught at first by listening and playing along with recordings, and then studied under Maine greats Dick Demers and Steve Grover, and attended the University of Maine-Augusta in the Jazz and Contemporary music program. During the past few years, I've also started to play the Chapman Stick, and I've increased the amount of hand percussion in his bag of tricks.
My reputation in the Maine music scene is as a solid, first-rate musician, and throughout all of this, I've appeared on many recordings. I'm now the drummer in the 80’s part
y/dance band “The GE3KS” and in the original band “Goss”, with an Adult Contemporary/Alt Rock album currently being written and recorded, as well as hard rock originals with Jerry Perron, with an alum completed and slated for mastering at Abbey Road Studios over the summer and fall of 2017.

I've taught drum set in one-on-one settings since 1992, first at Spectrum Music in Lewiston and Brunswick, Maine, then at The Music Centre in Brunswick, and at The Drum Shop in Portland, as well as in my own home. I've also lectured at summer percussion camps, and authored a drum method book, "Beginning Drum Set Coordination," and published the first edition in 2004, with an updated second edition printed in 2016. In mid-2016, I re-joined the teaching staff at The Drum Shop, and shortly after joined the staff at The Midcoast School of Music, also in Portland.

Since November of 2016, I have been an artist endorser for Rich Sticks. Check them out; they make a fantastic quality product and they're a top-notch crew!

His depth of understanding and passion for music go far beyond just his substantial drumming, vocal and Chapman Stick talents. He is able to engage in the technical minutiae and the broad philosophical aspects of all styles. Time spent with Luc in the musical space will move you forward!

I am a patient, enthusiastic teacher. I help my students achieve their musical goals as they build vital skills like focus and persistence. I find teaching incredibly rewarding because I get to help my students grow as musicians and as people. If you want to join a band, play in your local church, or even just learn songs by your favorite artists, I’d love to help! I teach children ages four and up (or younger, if a parent is present) and adults. I welcome complete beginners, advanced players, and everyone in between. You don’t need a drum set to start lessons, and you don’t even need a pair of sticks for your first one! Any student with enthusiasm and commitment can learn.

About Jack
I am a human! Music plays a huge role in my life, but other activities, passions, and relationships are also very important to me. That being said, I’ve devoted a huge portion of my last 14 years to music, so I’d like to share that part of my story with you.
I started playing drums when I was nine. I began playing professionally when I was 16, and I taught my first students shortly after that. When I was in high school, I had the privilege of playing at the Peaks Jazz Festival with some amazing guest performers, including Grammy-winning artists like Eric Marienthal, Dave Weckl, Ed Calle, and Randy Brecker. I’ve studied drums formally nearly since I began playing, and have had several wonderful teachers. I’ve combined what I felt were the most positive aspects of my their teaching to form my own teaching approach. Teaching has given me
a valuable perspective on the drums and on myself. It’s an ever-changing challenge that I enjoy immensely.
I graduated cum laude from the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music after studying drum set performance, composition, and music production. While still in college, I formed a jazz trio and started writing original music for us to play. I still perform with this group on a regular basis. I also perform frequently as a sideman in other people’s groups in various genres. I’ve also been fortunate enough to perform at the Kennedy Center and at the Umbria Jazz Festival. In addition to drumming, I also play the piano, write commercial music, and produce electronic music.
Like I mentioned before, I’m a human first! Outside of music, I enjoy baking, biking, traveling, and improvisatory acting. I love cookies and puns. If you have any questions about me, feel free to email me at ask by clicking "Ask a Question." Now, enough about me, I’m looking forward to learning about you!

What's really unique about the way Jack teaches as opposed to youtube videos for example, is that he shows you how to do things so you can do it your way, not just one way of doing it. Instead of just showing you how to do sidechain compression, he explains how it works so you can understand and use it however you want!
