I have been teaching guitar since 2009. I teach in a therapeutic style, using my music therapy training to be as observant, adaptive and flexible as I need to be for the student's benefit. I teach at the student's pace and to their interests, while building their musicality, music theory, and performance skills. I often incorporate singing into lessons as well. 1-2 times a year, we work towards building a repertoire of 1-4 pieces (depending on the student) to play at a local assisted living facility or skilled nursing facility.

The main focus of the private lessons is music theory and how it applies to the instrument. All the while trying to remain fun. Therefore, the musical style/genre that the student is seeking is irrelevant. At Dennis O Guitar Instruction the goal is for the student to have an understanding of the music that they seek to learn and become an independent musician.

Over the past 12 years, we've given over 3,000,000 lessons to happy customers around the world.

I am 56 years of age and have always loved music. As a freshman in college in 1974, I enrolled in some music theory classes and began playing guitar. Not one to discipline myself, I learned only some basic chords and a few little things throughout the years. One day I finally said to myself that it was time to "finally learn how to play the guitar." The good thing with respect to my disposition was that not once did I ever think I was too old to learn. It was a year ago on Christmas morning when my wife presented me with a card containing a number of lessons with Take Lessons. I was elated, anxious and excited to begin to learn what I had put off for half of my life. When I first called my instructor, Dave Murray, I knew this was going to be very edifying and very special for me. As a fellow instructor, I've come to realize that it takes a special person to really understand the needs of students and to appropriate a lesson plan that meets both the individual's elementary and progressive needs. Dave has done this marvelously. I can't measure the joy of success I've experienced learning to play with Dave, whom I'm here to tell you, is a tremendous asset to your organization. I was embarrassed somewhat when we began my lessons as I was all thumbs and very clumsy. Dave was incredible as he always applied the correct method that not only instilled my confidence, but allowed me to make sounds I never thought possible. I'm playing things on the guitar today that again, I never, ever thought were possible. Dave has a meticulous method to his instruction where he introduces things, simple or complex, during the tenure of lessons that are a future puzzle piece that logically fits somewhere down the road. I find his method of instruction intriguing and challenging. Again, at 56 years of age, I can honestly say, this is the greatest gift I could ever have bestowed upon myself. I'm never going to be on the cover of Guitar Player Magazine, but thanks to Dave, I'll always have one of the greatest gifts anyone can give themselves - the gift of playing music."

Added bonus he has a cute puppy!!!"
