Anna is an excellent and very patient teacher. I am an adult student that has zero experience in music but in the last few weeks I’ve learned how to read music and actually how to use my violin all thanks to Anna.

I have been teaching viola for seven years. Though I am classically trained, my interest in music goes far beyond classical music. I am constantly listening to various genres of music and consider myself a forever learner, loving everything in music from Prokofiev to the Flaming Lips. It is my job to help guide my students through their musical journeys, whether that is helping them get into their regional orchestra or teaching them that one song they've always wanted to learn. I teach out of the Essential Elements and Suzuki Method books. Though my lessons are fun and relaxed I will always give my students that extra push when needed. My goal is to help each student reach their personal success and to instill a love for playing music.

Tools for lessons:

Music Stand
Rosin
Shoulder rest or sponge
Previous method books (if you are not a first time learner)
Metronome
Pencil

My daughter (12) LOVES Miss Phoebe. We were so excited for our daughter to have private lessons even during COVID craziness. Phoebe is very patient and works well with kids. She is very communicative and has even telephoned when one of our lessons couldn't work out due to technical difficulties. My daughter's music teacher has been impressed with her growth, even though there is not in person orchestra at her school.

Viola is the undersung hero of the orchestra, and I love to help violists learn this beautiful instrument! Though much of the technique of the instrument is the same or very similar to the violin, violists enjoy a great repertoire of solo pieces and high demand in ensembles, which I can help you discover for yourself. (Please see my violin profile for more information on experience and lesson style)

About Cieran

I love music, and I love helping other people find and develop their love for music! I teach all styles of violin and piano to ages 4 and up, with a strong emphasis on finding what kind of music each student enjoys and building a life-long love of music with solid technical foundations. I hold a

"My son has been taking viola lessons from Helen for seven years. We have been very happy with her instruction and the wonderful, caring connection she has made with our son and family. Helen encourages each student’s progress while holding them to very high technical and musical standards. She engages students with age-appropriate, entertaining games and prizes to hook their attention and shape important skills and techniques. Helen is focused on molding young musicians into skilled, confident, advanced players while still being understanding and flexible with students’ life changes and schedules.
She encourages students to get involved with chamber music and other orchestra opportunities to expand their ensemble playing, and she connects students with other musicians to collaborate on projects. She has coached our three children with their string trio and has helped them select music appropriate for their level and interests. Helen is happy to help students with their orchestra auditions, seating auditions, and ensemble music.
Helen is an active professional musician as a member of the CSO and Highlands Square Ensemble among other professional musical pursuits and interests. She is involved in bringing musical opportunities to underserved communities through El Sistema and involved in music education in Haiti. This summer our son was able to collaborate with a violinist from Haiti who was visiting Helen. They worked together on several duets on a few occasions.
Throughout the school year, Helen facilitates studio group classes where students can play for each other in a fun, relaxed atmosphere. Helen connects students with excellent professional accompanists who are adept at collaborating with young musicians. In addition, she organizes 1-2 studio recitals per year where students can share their work with family and friends.
Helen is a talented musician, an excellent teacher, and a wonderful human being. She is patient, kind, helpful, and encouraging. I highly recommend her as an outstanding viola instructor."

"I thought I wanted to take viola lessons. Then I read her website and I realized that she might be able to help me get my voice back! I thought there was no hope ever. She has been extremely generous with her time, and I haven't seen her yet, but I'm not buying the viola I was planning on buying. I play cello, and piano still, but I am going to see if she can help me with my voice. She sounds incredible. I never dreamed that I could even have HOPE like this!"

"I have learned a lot from my lessons with Shadwa. She has a knack for explaining technique, for making the connections between the physical movement and the sound produced. (Yes, it really does help to stand up straight!) She takes a personal interest in her students, which makes for a great lesson atmosphere. We established longer term goals that we could work towards; I appreciated her patience and creativity. Even scales became more than just boring drills! I definitely recommend her as a viola teacher for adults!"

"Aleksandre is an incredible violist and dedicated, thoughtful, encouraging teacher! His passion for the instrument is obvious and his dynamic but approachable personality is a great match for our fairly reserved daughter. She has made tremendous progress in 1 year of lessons, and we attribute much of that progress to Aleks' meticulous instruction."

"Aleksandre is a wonderful teacher! I have been working on Mozart's Symphonie Concertante, and he helped me realize certain musical liberties while at the same time maintain my technique. Aleksandre's way of explaining things has made it very easy for me to progress as a violist. When he demonstrates specific ideas on his viola, it is extremely clear to understand, plus it gives me inspiration to be as good as him. His artistry, patience, and enthusiasm is why I chose him as my teacher."
