LESSON DETAILS

Whether you are a parent looking for instruction for your child, or for yourself, Rachel can customize the right program that best suits your needs. Her students come from all walks of life and have different goals, but they all have one thing in common. They love performing and have the desire to be the best at their chosen craft (singing/acting).

Some students want to sing/act for themselves, others want to sing/act for a hobby, and others want to be professional performers. That's where Rachel comes in. No matter what your goals are, she can help. Rachel teaches her students how to become true artists without tearing them down and without taking away the part of them that makes them unique. She teaches healthy technique that is based off of the human anatomy; the science of how the body/mind works and how the body/mind can work as efficiently as possible while singing or acting.

Learning how to sing/act is a process and doesn't happen overnight. Rachel's ultimate goal as a teacher is to not only make her students the best performers and singers they can be, but also give them all of the proper tools they need to have a more productive mind frame and become self-sufficient. Of course this can take years to master. It takes time and dedication.

OTHER LESSON INFORMATION

SINGING: Bel Canto singing technique for the modern singer is taught in private and group classes. No one sounds like old opera singers, even if the student wants to sing opera. Students are allowed to choose most of the material they learn in the lesson. There will be times when Rachel will suggest a song to a student but if the student doesn't enjoy the song, they will work as a team to find a song that does work for the student. Gain a better tone quality, complete control of your voice, bigger range, more flexibility, and confidence. Learn healthy voice technique, how to fully take care of your own voice so you can sing for the rest of your life (even after lessons), and become a self sufficient performer for life.

ACTING: Stella Adler, Stanislavsky, Chekhov, and Meisner Acting Technique for Theatre/Camera is taught in private and group classes. All students are exposed to each technique and Rachel sees which technique each student responds to the most. Once the student and Rachel are able to identify the technique, Rachel continues to use the terminology of that technique for the remainder of the time the student is in lessons. Students eventually are able to play roles truthfully and realistically, even if the roles are opposite of the student's own personality.

BY THE TIME STUDENTS GRADUATE FROM LESSONS:

1. Gain a lifelong, solid, consistent, and healthy technique that they can always count on in practice and performance.

2. Gain specific technical and personal notes in a notebook and/or computer file that is organized and always accessible for review.

3. Gain artistry, performance skills, and a strong voice that will look/sound authentic; Singers will sound appropriate to whatever style of music they are singing. (No fake sound or look.) Actors will just be in the moment and truthful whether they are on stage or in front of the camera.

4. Gain the confidence to always put on a great performance.

5. Gain focus and a more productive mind frame.

6. Become self-sufficient by knowing how to assess a problem and then fix it without creating a new issue.

*** Studio Equipment ***
PRIVATE HOME STUDIO: Keyboard, speakers (smartphone, iPod, iPad), CD player, tape recorder/player, digital recorder, music stand, mirror, laptop, sheet music selections, HD video camera, tripod, video editing software, audio editing software, USB microphone, and high speed WiFi internet. **ASK ABOUT ON LOCATION TRAINING (ON SET, THEATER, PERFORMANCE EVENT, OR RECORDING STUDIO)!

**ONLINE LESSONS ALSO AVAILABLE!

*** Specialties ***
We specialize in Bel Canto voice technique for the modern singer. Each student can sing all genres without sounding too classical, "fake", and without losing their voice while singing for long periods of time.

Other Specialties: Teaching acting technique for theatre-TV-Film (Stella Adler, Stanislavsky, Chekhov, & Meisner), performance skills, songwriting, and creating self-sufficient singers-actors-performers (Artist Development).

STUDIO POLICIES-

CANCELLATION: 48 hour lesson cancellation policy and emergencies (determined by me) are handled on a case by case basis. If the student needs to miss a lesson due to an other activity or vacation, they or their parents/guardian if under 18, must contact Rachel Menconi at least a week from their next scheduled lesson in advance to prevent from forfeiting the lesson.

MAKE UPS: Make up lessons will be scheduled when time allows. No make up lesson or class will be given to ‘no shows’ or late cancellation, and no extra time will be given to students who are late to their lesson or class. If there is ever a time Rachel Menconi is running late, extra time will be given to make the lesson a full 60 minutes. If Rachel Menconi needs to reschedule, a make up lesson will be scheduled as close to the same week as possible. Make up lessons are scheduled at Rachel Menconi’s discretion.

ONLINE LESSONS FOR IN-PERSON LESSON CLIENTS: In the event that the student is sick but still would like their lesson, an online lesson can be scheduled instead. Students can NOT come to their in person lesson sick, coughing, sneezing, with a runny nose, cold, flu, “allergies”, fever, etc. (This is to make sure no germs will be spread).

An online lesson can also be scheduled if there is bad weather, if a student is having car trouble, or any other reason for the student not being able to physically get to Rachel during their normallly scheduled lesson time. Online lessons are conducted through FaceTime, Google, Hangouts, or Skype.

SCHEDULE:
Lessons are weekly, on the same time/day of the week unless we have rescheduled or we have discussed in writing another lesson plan. If the student’s lesson falls on a holiday, we will either reschedule or if no other day is available, resume the following week.

LATENESS:
If a student is going to be late they need to contact Rachel Menconi as soon as possible, to let her know they will be late. Lessons will end on time unless she is able to extend the lesson due to a late student or her schedule allows for it though please understand, Rachel Menconi would be extending a courtesy and would not be obligated to do so. If on the rare occasion Rachel Menconi is running late, she will always make up the time.

SITTING IN:
Parents/Guardians are ONLY permitted to stay for the first lesson and are NOT permitted to sit in for any other lesson/class unless invited. This is to promote good/strong teacher-student relationship quickly and easily. Also, many times students feel more comfortable when their parents/guardians leave.
Of course there will be times when the parent will be invited back in at the end of some of the lesson to showcase progress.

"I try to be as fair as possible to both parties when it comes to cancellations, rescheduling, lateness, and make ups. Have a concern or question? Just talk with me. I'm all about communication!" - Rachel Menconi

My 9 yr. old daughter received singing lessons with Rachel. Rachel was SO wonderful, patient, and creative with every session with her. She was constantly coming up with different ways to keep her engaged and was always reassuring her to increase her confidence. She gave great constructive feedback on how my daughter was doing and what she can work on to improve. I give her 5 stars! Thanks so much, Rachel!

Overall, very impressed. She is direct and doesn't tell you something you want to hear. Her evaluation process is well rounded and planned. She puts together a great curriculum to know what to expect in the coming lessons. Very easy going person and makes you feel completely comfortable at the initial lessons.

Taking lessons with Rachel has been one the best decisions I've ever made. She not only has helped me with acting but has helped me become a better person. I've grown to understand myself and I've learned and done things I would never have done. And would never have been able to do. Her lessons will not only help you perform, they will help you in your everyday life.

I have a Master's Degree in Education, and teach all levels of acting and directing for the stage and/or screen. Whether you need a video presentation for your boss or you want to try your hand at live theatre, from the community stage all the way to that professional audition, I can help.

About Larry

My name is Larry, and I was born and raised in Chicago and now call the Phoenix, AZ metro area home. I have a Master's Degree in Education (Higher Ed. and Curriculum Development). I have a Tutoring and Educational Consulting business of my own, working with excellent education partners like Takelessons.

My tutoring business is geared towards middle, high school, and college students, and my specialization is geared in four areas:

1) The Humanities: History (U.S., European, and World), English, Literature (with a special passion for all things Shakespeare), and Social Studies (including American Government and Political Science).

2) Papers: Research papers (and how to do the
research for them), essays, creative writing - including citation & formatting.

3) Drama (the Theatre kind of drama, not life drama): Acting, directing, staging, analysis, including Shakespeare.

4) Test Prep: ACT, SAT, PSAT, ISEE, TACHS

***My Promise to You***

I will treat you like an individual - that means that we'll find out how YOU learn best, and we'll work that way. I don't teach memorization. I teach by asking and answering questions, as well as providing information.

***My Expectation of You***

That you will come with an open mind, come with questions, and a willingness to learn and have fun.

***Lesson Details***

*The Humanities*
The reason so many people go screaming into the night when confronted with lessons in things like history, or government, or English for that matter, are all the names and dates to memorize. I don't teach that way. We begin with things you want (or need) to know. From there, we cover how those things affected other things, It's a huge world out there, and how we got here from where we started is a wonderful and complicated trip. History doesn't happen in a vacuum, and we learn who we are by knowing where we come from.

*Papers*
Obviously I won't write your paper for you, but I will show you how and where to start your research (and how to sort it as well). I will also proof-read for grammar and/or organizational errors and show you how to structure it in general terms.

*Drama*
I have acted, I have directed. From the community to professional levels. We will talk about character creation, about staging, about working with your director as well as your fellow actors. We will mostly brainstorm, and you will be able to experiment in vision as well as technique.

As an actor who has been featured on various international commercials for brands such as Old Spice, Southern Comfort and Anthem Blue Cross, as well as professional theatre and operatic experience I am well versed in various approaches to film and stage acting for your particular project or audition.

About Fernando
I am a professional vocalist who regularly performs with orchestras, rock bands, jazz bands and as a singer/songwriter. I teach beginners to professional touring artists and can break down the seemingly complex vocal techniques in simple to understand concepts and exercises. My focus areas are breath, placement and freedom from tension in order to increase your efficiency, stamina and flexibility between registers and musicality. (See my online tutorials for a quick idea of what it might be like to work with me)

I have a degree in Vocal Performance from the University of Michigan and have worked professionally from Opera to Pop. I started my professional music career at the age of 10, traveling the world with the American Boychoir School in Princeton, NJ. I moved to the San Francisco Bay Area where I worked as an instructor and vocal
coach for the Grammy Award Winning Pacific Boychoir. I also sang professionally for ensembles such as the San Francisco Symphony Chorus, Clerestory, American Bach Soloists and San Francisco Pocket Opera.

I am currently a vocal instructor for Sweetwater Music Academy, music director for the Jesters (a theatre ensemble for people with developmental disabilities) and I sing for hospital patients as a Parkview Healing Artist. I have taught grade levels K-8 in private schools so I am accustomed to all age levels.

As a songwriter I have composed and performed music for MTV, VHI, E! and the Oxygen Network, and have acted on commercials for Southern Comfort, Old Spice, & Anthem Blue Cross.

I am also the songwriter and front man for the original regional RootsRock band, Fernando T. & The Wickersham Bros and have established myself as a teaching artist for young audiences through the Carnegie Hall Link Up Concert Series.

I look forward any questions you may have and hope to help you or your child find creative fulfillment from the most unique instrument in the world- your voice!

[PLEASE NOTE: I will be teaching exclusively online from June-December 2017 period and am happy to squeeze in as many in in location lessons you would like before then]

Elizabeth Hood was my voice student for two years as she pursued her Master of Music in Vocal Performance at BGSU from 2013 - 2015. She is very musically astute, loves to be challenged, very skilled with foreign languages, and possesses a wonderful voice! Her voice is stunningly beautiful and easy, especially in the coloratura repertoire. She sang the role of The Queen of the Night from Mozart's Die Zauberflote in Germany last summer and literally brought down the house. She has wonderful command of her instrument and I know her to be an experienced and devoted voice teacher. It's my pleasure to recommend her teaching skills in voice. An AEA actress in NYC, I love helping high school students with their college auditions! A graduate of Boston University's BFA Acting program, I have a deep understanding of various acting techniques that I bring to our classes. I can help you find the right contemporary and classical monologues for your audition, so that you feel comfortable and confident!

About Lauren
I'm an actor/musician in NYC, and have taught kids all over the world! I'm available for in-home, online, and in-studio lessons, where I can teach violin, flute, singing, acting, and English (ESL). In addition to teaching, this summer you can see me play the title role in The Fiddler on the Roof off-Broadway at NYTF, directed by Tony and Oscar winner, Joel Grey!

I received my BFA in Acting from Boston University's school of theater, but I have been making music since I could walk. As a classically trained singer, violinist and flautist, I've been able to incorporate my musical talents with my career as an actress. I play a range of professional gigs, from churches to rock concerts to pit orchestras. I had the chance to travel around the US, performing in theaters around the country for the Broadway national tour of the tony-award winni
ng actor/musician musical, Once! My range of experience helps me cater lessons to you and your specific needs.

While most of my life has been spent performing, I discovered a love for teaching after college. I have been teaching music and theater for 5 years, and two years ago I began teaching ESL to elementary students in Turkey. I fell in love with teaching English, and feel my training in theater and music helps me use different, exciting teaching techniques in our lessons. I am conversational in both Turkish and Spanish as well!

No matter if we're working on music, acting, or English, I'm incredibly committed to my students and want each lesson to be fun and motivational. I'm a patient, supportive teacher, and know that each student is unique and moves at his/her own pace! Please reach out to me, and I will be happy to answer your questions!

We love Lauren. She is making violin a great experience for our daughter (11 yrs old). She is very thorough and encouraging, and introduces interesting music that is fun and challenging for a beginner student. Our daughter says she can truly feel her own improvement, and is really happy to have additional lessons with Lauren, beyond what she receives in school. Lauren is flexible with scheduling and very reliable, and we intend to stick with her - and with the violin- for the duration!

Lauren Thomas is an excellent musician with a tremendous amount of patience and a seemingly boundless supply of talents. As a fellow musician who has played professionally alongside Lauren, I have witnessed first hand her skilled mastery of both the flute and the violin -- as intuitive as she is technically proficient. Apart from her musical abilities, she's kind, fun and sensitive and would make for either a great beginner violin teacher or as an instructor for someone with intermediate skills looking to expand their abilities. Cannot recommend her highly enough! Whether you're seeking instruction in the flute or the violin, Lauren's the woman for the job.

My goal is for students to develop a solid acting technique that can be used in various types of acting. I work on a variety of areas including, multi-camera, single-camera, improv, theatre, cold reading, and film using sense memory, objectives, repetition, and more.

With years of experience in film, television, and theatre, and a burning desire to share what I've learned over the past 20 years, I strive for my clients to receive quality and professional service.

About Jazz
Jazz has trained with The Lee Strasberg Institute in Los Angeles and New York, Stella Adler in New York, Janet Alhanti, Lesly Kahn, and John Rosenfeld Studios in Los Angeles just to name a few.

Born in Stockton, California, Jazz R. started performing at the age of 22 months. It was at her mother’s dance studio where Jazz developed her onstage skills, studying an array of dance styles from salsa to ballroom and modern to African. Jazz started acting at the age of four, when her mother took her to a workshop in Beverly Hills, and quickly progressed from there. By five years old, R. had booked her first commercial and at the age of 6, she booked both her first pilot and her first movie role, appearing as Angela Basset’s daughter in the cult classic “Waiting to Exhale.”

With Jazz’s career quickly taking off, her family opted to reloca
te in order to accommodate it; her mother giving up her dance studio and her father having his job transferred to Los Angeles. Her big break came at the age of 13, when she won the role of ‘Claire Kyle’ on ABC’s hit sitcom “My Wife and Kids” opposite Damon Wayans and Tisha Campbell.

After departing the show, Jazz returned to her first love: dance. She went from the Boston Ballet, to the school of American Ballet, to a full scholarship at Alvin Ailey, where she danced with the first company. During her stay at Ailey, Jazz won a spot at a ballet company in South Carolina where at 16 years old, she was its youngest soloist. In these years, Jazz kept busy with multiple guest appearances on series, including “Law & Order: SVU” and hosting for Nickelodeon and with her education, graduating two years early in the top 5% of the country’s high school students.

Shortly thereafter, Jazz returned to acting full-force and in addition to making guest appearances on the TNT drama “Perception,” “Secret Life of the American Teenager,” “Monk,” and “Without A Trace,” “iZombie,” “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.” She has held memorable recurring roles on “The Office” (as Stanley’s daughter), “Everybody Hates Chris,” “Jericho,” TV Land’s “The Soul Man” alongside Cedric the Entertainer and Niecy Nash. And most recently as a series regular playing the rebellious daughter of Tony winner, Anika Noni Rose, on BET’s “The Quad.”

Angela is a real pro who knows her craft and has the patience and kindness to share it! She can quickly help you break down a scene, character, script and her comedic timing is impeccable. If you just need someone to bounce ideas off of and read lines, she's a great scene partner. We first met online but have since worked together in person, she also happens to be the sweetest person, truly honest and I now consider her a friend. Trust her and you'll be a better actor for it.
