Learning to be a songwriter is a combination of music theory and lyrics. We will study popular tracks of all styles to learn the basics about what makes those songs great. Take your songwriting skills to another level by understanding the music theory behind a well written song.

About Eric
Music isn't just a career choice: it is a way of life. I have been playing music since I was a toddler; everything I have learned about life has been through music. I believe that self-expression is important to being confident with yourself. I look forward to sharing my passion for music and teaching with any students who are ready to learn!

I have over a decade of performance experience and have played along the East Coast with several bands. Some venues I have performed at recently include The Plaza Theatre in Orlando; Backbooth in Downtown Orlando; The Crowbar in Tampa; The Bandshell and The Peabody Auditorium in Daytona Beach. Some groups I play with are Run Rhino, The Mighty St. John's, The Children of Stone, and MPG (Mobile Performance Group). I am a versatile musician who primarily performs and instructs on Drums, Bass, a
nd Guitar (acoustic and electric). I teach nearly all styles of music, including classical, jazz, funk, and rock. I have graduated from Stetson University with degrees in Digital Arts, Music, and Business.

I am also an accomplished computer musician and sound engineer. I am fluent in a range of professional software programs which includes Logic, Pro Tools, Ableton Live, Amadeus Pro, Cubase, and MaxMSP. I have done sound for large national touring acts such as Molly Hatchet, Blackfoot, and Matt Costa.

I feel that nothing is impossible. Great results aren't given, they are earned, and I know how to set goals to reach those results. This is a virtue I like to share with students. My dedication to music has helped me accomplish much at a young age.

*** Lesson Details ***
All lessons accommodate the unique needs of the student. My lessons don't merely teach you musical theories: I will teach you how to express yourself through your instrument as you learn those theories. You will gain technical knowledge and the tools to experience your musical potential. Lessons with me are the perfect extra-curricular activity for your child, or a great experience for you. A large part of my curriculum is more than learning how to play a few cover songs. The lessons are also about becoming more confident with yourself as a person and developing character along the way. You will learn about the discipline, patience, and dedication that it takes to stand out among professionals, not just as a musician, but as a strong individual. Music is a part of that. What you play becomes an extension of yourself. Young or old, everyone has something to share with the world through music.

In a given lesson, you can expect half of it to be about the basics of your instrument and the literature for reading music. The other half is about how you can apply these principles in a unique way that relates to yourself. However, the lesson is all about the student. If the student wants to learn in different ways that is never a problem. All I ask is that you're eager to learn! Everybody has different musical tastes and different learning styles. That is what makes every musician unique and every lesson exciting.

I enjoy teaching people of all ages 5 and up and have experience teaching groups or individuals. From beginner or experienced, hobbyist or professional, every person has a place in the wonderful world of music!

Eric is the real deal as a guitar teacher. I personally play the guitar myself, but as any parent knows when it comes to teaching your own child there is going to be some resistance no matter what! Lol. Eric is very well educated in music and has the rapport to teach beginners as well as advanced students. My son looks forward to his time with Eric and considers him a friend as well! In closing, if your looking for an instructor that has a solid music background that can channel that knowledge into your child or self, look no further!

Whether it is composition for yourself or someone else I can show you the way to work that is fast, effective and outlines the stabdard approach used by the best in the business.

About James
I worked for Eddie Van Halen for five years in the 1990's in the Beverly Hills area of Los Angeles and was instrumental in providing help with development of the Peavey Wolfgang and Wolfgang Special Guitar by providing feedback on the prototypes Eddie was designing at the time. I learned a lot from Eddie and his brother Alex about music and the music industry. (All you have to do is pay attention! ) I have played in bands from Hollywood to Toronto and back both as a singer songwriter and guitarist. I bring the Musicians Institute way to the table and get things up and running quickly. I help students get it under their fingers fast and get it right the first time.

I believe in sharing the happiness of making music with anyone who loves music and the guitar in particular. I do my very best to get you playing the songs you love in Pop,
Rock, Jazz and Folk Music of your choice. Today's modern new guitars are easy to play and you will enjoy learning Guitar right away. That is how it should be.
When you study there is a basic understanding of Guitar to be learned that allows an ease of use for anyone for years to come. This will help you reach your goal and improve each week. My students learn to practice in a way that feels comfortable and makes sense. This takes all the stress out of learning and gives everyone something to smile about and look forward to each week.

The good feeling of playing along with friends and taking a solo is within every students grasp. I will show you the way there. And with a solid and straightforward approach to the theory as it applies directly to the guitar you will feel confident and unafraid of any music endeavor. We'll cover harmony and fingerboard theory and give you a road map of the guitar neck that makes it a pleasure to play. You learn the basics and much more than you thought possible retaining 90 percent of what you learn!

Having been a student myself I was deeply involved in music since age 12 and played in bands and duos for over 15 years . I can help you to be a well rounded player and performer with a smile, a laugh and a joy for music whether your in a band or a budding solo artist.

*** Lesson Details ***
Most students want to play the Guitar to play their favorite songs and I'm the same way. Music is something we carry with us in our hearts and minds. Students will learn what they wish to learn and work at a pace that is comfortable to them. Whether you are a student, “weekend warrior” or a parent whose child has expressed an interest in Guitar anyone can learn all there is to know about Harmony and Theory for the Guitar and how to play their favorite songs.

We cover theory in an easy and straightforward no nonsense way in the first half of each lesson and then apply it to the song you wish to learn. This creates an atmosphere where you understand and feel at home with the Guitar. You get an understanding right away and because it is immediately fun it allows you to feel comfortable at any level. Music is fun, and songs are the creative expression of what we feel. Combining theory and the freedom to play and sing songs allows us to express ourselves through music.
After 6 months students will have a solid foundation in theory, and a road map of the guitar fretboard enabling them to advance to an intermediate level if they are ready to do so. Students will know enough that music as it relates to the Guitar, which is the world’s most popular instrument in contemporary music, is not a mystery but is a welcome friend. And they will be able to play songs by popular artists and advance at a pace that is satisfying and enjoyable.

Song writing is about personal expression, but sometimes we need to know a bit more to turn words into music. It needn't be difficult to understand the basics; let me help! I am currently Director of Jazz Ensembles and Instructor of Saxophone at South Dakota State University. For booking, please sign up with TakeLessons today, and then we'll arrange a mutually agreeable meeting time.

About Carl
Dr. Carl S. will be teaching at Oklahoma State University as a Lecturer of Saxophone and Music Theory during Dr. Jeffrey Loeffert's sabbatical beginning August 2017. There are some restrictions based on the maturity of the child and the goals of the lessons. Kids under 13-14 years of age are not very focused on practicing or conceptual musical ideas. If we are just teaching and reinforcing basic things and exposing the child to music, it's a great time to teach them. Otherwise I could be wasting your money.

With a Bachelor's of Science in Music from Temple University, I have been songwriting since 2002, and writing spoken word poetry since 1994. I've also studied songwriting under Berklee University's Pat Pattison, one of John Mayer's songwriting teachers. My songs have been licensed for use in shows on major TV networks, and they've also been featured in Broadjam's Top 10 lists. Studying the music theory and lyrical skills necessary for professional level songs has been a passion of mine for years now, and I'd love to put all of that experience and info in one place for you!

About Kepa
Hi! I'm Kepa Freeman and I'm a musician/educator/composer/tutor/songwriter based in Waldorf, MD who's offering a few different services on this site, but one thing is consistent: I work my hardest to give fun/engaging lessons that guide my students to success.

In terms of credentials I have a Master's of Arts in Teaching in Special Education (Trinity Washington University) and a Bachelor's of Science in Music (Temple University). I'm also a licensed Special Education Teacher for grades K-12 in Washington, DC. On the musical side, my musical credentials can be heard here: www.broadjam.com/kepafreeman.

A little about my experience as a teacher. I've spent the last 5 years working as an elementary Special Education Teacher. Before that I was a Music Production Teacher. Before that, I was a teacher's aide for a Special Education
High School. a Substitute Teacher, and a Tutor. Overcoming challenges to show my students success is what I do!

I hope to work with you soon!

I have been writing songs since 14. I have recorded my songs with the Dharma Bums and Thunderbug Collective. During my time at Oberlin, I sought to improve my songwriting through courses in the creative writing department and workshops with the Oberlin Songwriters Association. I was an active member of this organization and was a featured performer at the annual showcase from 2014-2016.

About Lenny
Studying music has tremendous benefits including: discipline, self confidence, problem solving, and stronger connections in the brain! Understanding music can give you new perspectives on how to look at the world. If you have felt the power of music then you owe it to yourself to understand and harness what is already a part of you. OWN IT!

While studying with me we will work on many facets of music including technique, sight reading, critical listening, music theory, improvisation, and how to apply these skills to a piece of music to truly express yourself. My goal is to instill a deep understanding of music to my students while letting their individual sensibilities show.

STYLES: I can teach all styles of American music (i.e Rock, Blues, Country, Jazz, R&B etc.) as well as classical and fingerstyle.
I have a degree in classical
guitar and have performed with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra as well as done concerts in the USA, Italy, and the UK.
I have experience playing in many different bands in many styles including: Rock, Reggae, African, Blues, and Jazz groups.

SUZUKI METHOD: I am trained and certified in the Suzuki Guitar Method and spent 3 years teaching Suzuki in studio with children as young as 5. This involves a significant parent-teacher-student commitment and regularly yields impressive results.

ON TALENT: I agree with Shin-ichi Suzuki that talent is irrelevant and a myth. I believe that the potential of all my students are the same but they come to me with various starting skills levels and all learn at a very different pace. I believe that the myth of “talent” really just means that the individual has had a long exposure to music. This is why I emphasize critical listening in my lessons. If you have a large knowledge of music and sounds in your head it makes it easier to make connections and better assess your ideas.

Lenny is a great instructor. He's both personable and patient, brings extensive theory knowledge as well as technical guitar playing abilities to the table. His rates are reasonable and he's flexible with scheduling. I highly recommend lessons with Lenny, regardless of your level of experience.

Lenny was my daughter's first instructor for guitar, she had two years of piano - she was not as motivated with the piano instructor as with Lenny. He took his time with any questions she had, he was totally patient with her, he really has a understanding of music and is able to explain it in a way with minimal if no confusion. No matter what kind of day he may have had at school he remained absolutely consistent from week to week with how he taught during the lesson. His focus was where it should be, even when other family members needed to take my daughter he was undaunted yet caring. I would highly recommend this young man hands down. I told him personally through emails how thankful and blessed we were with him as a teacher. I have other children, older, and I have had them through various teachers with various instruments and Lenny is definitely a 5-Star.
