I specialize in helping absolute beginners and intermediate students in learning both classical music and pop songs. Age 3 - 93!

Having studied piano performance at Westminster Choir College after teaching myself as a teenager, and having taught piano for over a decade has prepared me to teach any beginner and intermediate piano student, no matter her background. My students learn how to read music well, while playing with great style and proper technique.
In my home studio, we'll use a pro-level Yamaha keyboard with weighted keys.

Maya joined the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra in 2007. After receiving her Master of Music degree from the Juilliard School in 2001, she became a member of the Honolulu Symphony. In Hawaii, she recorded with the prestigious Hawaiian singer Keali’i Reichel on his album Ke’alaokamaile, which was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2005.

A native of Japan, Maya received Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from Tokyo University of the Arts. She attended seminars in Japan and England with the Amadeus Quartet and performed in both countries as a member of the Sunrise String Quartet.

In the United States, Maya studied with Masao Kawasaki on scholarships at the Juilliard School, where she received a master’s degree in 2001. She has also studied with Garrett Fischbach from the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and Yoko Takebe from the New York Philharmonic. She has given solo and chamber music recitals at Lincoln Center in New York and at the Spoleto Music Festival in Italy. She joined Orpheus

After teaching elementary music in the public schools and operating a private music studio for 47 years, I retired from public school teaching in June. Since March, because of the coronavirus, I have been teaching lessons entirely online. I strive to personalize lessons to suit each student's learning style, ability and personal goals. My master's thesis was Developing an Approach for Beginning Group Piano Instruction. As a composer myself, I strongly encourage my students to understand music theory and to explore writing music of their own. I believe in strong sight-reading skills while supporting their natural abilities to learn by ear. The ultimate goal with all students is to develop a life-long love for music in order to make it a permanent part of their lives!

Heather has been teaching piano since 2012 and is currently available to teach in-home and online lessons. Heather’s main focus is classical piano, but she has also helped students learn how to compose and play by ear. Her students have won college scholarships and participated in the National Auditions hosted by the American College of Musicians, National Guild of Piano Teachers (NGPT). Heather teaches beginner, intermediate, and advanced students. She loves learning about the individualities of each of her students and tailoring lessons to them.
