Julian Y.

Boulder, CO

About Julian

I received my Music BA from CU Boulder in 2014. I have played professionally in several bands on a variety of instuments including Bass, Drums, Guitar, Piano, Ukulele and Voice for the past 8 years. My classical training in combination with my experience as a song writer, multi-instrumentalist and band leader gives me a uniquely well-rounded teaching style. I aim to teach and inspire students to use music as a joyful platform for learning important skills such as diligent practice, cognitive flexibilty, and creative expression.

Growing up and playing in Hawaii and Colorado, I have had t
he opportunity to learn from prolific, passionate and talented world music instrumentalists and percussionists from all over the globe. With my students, I love to share my appreciation for eclecticism, nuance and groove while also emphasizing the importance and my passion for a solid music theory and aural skills foundation. With this in mind, I am skilled at creating a curriculum that is based on my students interests.

I particularly enjoy teaching aural skills, sight reading, and music theory while encouraging joyful creative expression, coordination and focus. I always tailor lessons to the goals of the student and parents, but after three months, a beginning student who so desires, can have a grasp of basic theoretical concepts (like sight reading, transposition, transcription and tonal analysis) as well as basic practical skills like playing along to various popular songs/genres, improvising and song writing. I often find that these subject areas are complimentary.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I can teach in my home studio in North Boulder. The studio has keyboard, bass, drums, guitar, ukulele and vocal microphones. Students should bring their own instruments to the studio lessons (drums and piano provided in the studio) Parents may attend the lessons if they choose.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide all necessary materials for lessons, however it is necessary that students have their own instruments on which to play and practice. I may request that students buy some materials such as tuners (for stringed instruments) or lesson books.

*** Specialties ***
Pop, Reggae, West-African Highlife, Funk, Soul, Blues and Jazz

As a beginning bass player with no previous experience, my daughter was relunctant to start online lessons. Julian quickly established a rapport with her. She now looks forward to her weekly lesson and even practices daily (a miracle) after school. Julian has taken the time to build a good relationship with my shy daughter, and she thinks he is wonderful. I am impressed by his willingness to not just teach the mechanics of playing, but to build a relationship with his students. I would recommend this dedicated and patient teacher.

*** Lesson Details ***
My lessons are geared towards a set of goals that are created between the student's wants and my expectations for them to be successful at what the student wants to achieve. For each student, I use a different set of pedagogical tools designed to get them to the goals they want. The main goal I have for all my students is that their fundamentals on their instrument will be at the level that they can complete their goals with ease. Over their time with me, they will have the skills to coach themselves when they practice and tackle any music they come across.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I expect them to provide and music stand and their music. These are both things that they need to have at their home for practice.

*** Specialties ***
I teach and perform both jazz and classical music. Almost any style that uses a trombone or brass instruments, I have performed in and have a strong foundation in.

Aaron has been working with my 11 year old son G since last fall, so my review is sadly overdue. I initially chose him because his musical influences seemed in line with my sons. Since then we have learned much about Aaron, and he has become a wonderful addition to our home. Our first lesson was spent teaching G about his guitar, making sure we had the right tools and listening to music. Aaron took great care to listen to my son and learn about his interests and goals. His patience is endless, and he truly has a passion for opening up students to all types of music. All of the music G has learned is something that they chose together through listening and collaboration.

Over the next several months we enjoyed watching G build on his love of music and he really looks forward to his lessons. Through this process Aaron helped us learn that G was having trouble with hand strength and so he suggested trying the Ukulele until his hands grew a bit and got stronger. Aaron went above and beyond to help us pick the right instrument for him. Since changing over, our home has been filled with the sounds of the Ukulele, and G practices more than ever. Our family is lucky to have found Aaron, and he is the perfect fit for our son.

My daughter and I both think Aaron is great. I hired him to teach my 7 year old daughter. He's patient, kind, and clearly not only knows his instruments, but also loves them. He has a quiet passion for music that really makes her want to do well.

Aaron introduced my 10 year old daughter to guitar and taught her all about the various components of the guitar and some simple chords and notes. He talked about music with her and catered lessons to focus on songs she was interested in. Aaron came to our house, met our whole family and was very professional. As a parent, I couldn't ask for a better teacher!

Calvin G.

Broomfield, CO

About Calvin

As a classical trained violist with orchestral, chamber, and solo performance experience, my teaching style is geared towards performance and expression. I don't adhere to any one book of teaching, adjusting my teaching to the unique needs of each student. My teachers came from different pedagogical backgrounds; as a result, I have a wide array of teaching tools available to pass on to my students. I have taught with the Longy School of Music's El Sistema program and had a Teaching Artist residence with Cambridge Public Schools. I hold a BM in Viola performance from the Lamont School of Music
and a MM in Viola Performance from the Longy School of Music.

I have played viola since I first began my musical studies at age 9. As a result, I have seen teachers hold viola students back, simply because they play the "lesser" instrument in the viola family. I do not hold my students back and I hold them all to the same high level of playing, regardless of which instrument they play.
