Alaina C.

Oxford, MA

About Alaina

ABOUT ME

I teach both piano and voice in Oxford, MA. where I co-own Calton Music Studio. My students currently range from 2.5 years old (in KiddyKeys preschool piano classes) to adult, and I love teaching them all! I’ve taught students ranging from novices to professionals and conservatory-bound high school students, and I’m particularly passionate about working with enthusiastic beginners and building musical fluency from the bottom up. I also adore working with older students on the finer details of technique and seeing them light up when everything finally clicks!

One of my main goals
as a teacher is to provide a unique learning experience tailored to each individual student. I incorporate proven classical techniques with modern technology and approaches to make lessons both effective and engaging. I’m extremely passionate about both vocal and piano pedagogy and am always on the lookout for new research and new ways to keep things interesting. My students, whether studying piano or voice, explore a wide variety of repertoire, including classical, folk, jazz, and popular styles.

If you’re curious about the nitty gritty, I have a Bachelor of Music from New England Conservatory and a Master of Music from Longy School of Music of Bard College. When I’m not teaching or practicing, myself, you can usually find me behind a book, at a local farmer’s market, or directing the choir at the First Congregational Church of Oxford.

STUDIO

My home studio has a grand piano and a seating/waiting area for parents and siblings.

STUDENT MATERIALS

I will provide reference books and other teaching materials that will be used in lessons. I expect my students to have a piano (or full-sized keyboard with 88 weighted keys, an attached pedal, and a proper bench) for home practice and to reimburse me for books to be used at home.

Exceptional!

My daughter started piano lessons at age 8 and switched to Alaina when she was 10. The growth has been exponential! Alaina is an incredibly talented musician and has a real skill for teaching. She is very gentle and patient, yet knows how and when to challenge a student. The music is engaging, interesting and makes learning fun. My daughter loves playing and continues to be inspired by Alaina's talents and passion. i would highly recommend Alaina without reservation!

Jean's philosophy of teaching is; 1. Taking on any new task requires time and discipline. Mistakes are a part of the learning process. The biggest challenges reap the greatest rewards.

2. The student and teacher are a team! The teacher and student will work together to learn together. As the student is learning new skills and techniques, the teacher is learning all about the student and their specialized needs.

Jean is a graduate of Bradford College i
n Bradford MA with a Bachelors Degree in Creative Arts. Her major instrument is piano.

Students will have the opportunity to learn to play music by composers such as Mozart and Bach. Steve K.

Ellington, CT

About Steve

I am a Musical Director who has scored original music for many motion pictures and television and was musical arranger for the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. I've scored and arranged original music for several television shows including, Desperate Housewives, MTV's Making the Band, It's Showtime at the Apollo and numerous series on PBS, A & E and Disney, . I have also served as on-set vocal and piano coach for many Disney TV series.

As a piano instructor, I believe in giving every student a foundation in classical music.. I enjoy teaching and playing Jazz and pop as well.

I've worked with
students ages 5-90. I simply love the teaching process and respect every student's journey. Mixing structure and discipline with a positive teaching style, I work to inspire students to be their best within a well structured curriculum that is fun and engaging.

Music must be fun...always!

*** Lesson Details ***
My students see progress. I don't believe in cookie-cutter instruction. I take the time to learn a students individual comprehension of the musical language and their learning style. I also build a practice schedule that is realistic and creates growth. Music instruction should not feel like a burden, but should be joyful. It's a process I have respected. Whether you are 90 or 9, you can learn music, love music and feel its presence by playing an instrument or singing. My job is to communicate that joy and show you how you can do it for yourself.

Learning to master a musical instrument is a two way commitment and I will always give you my full effort as I love the results.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have a digital upright piano for piano and vocal instruction.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I will provide the lesson material and help students with purchasing the right method books.

*** Specialties ***
For beginning Piano-Intermediate, I have embraced the James Bastien series, as I believe it paces the young student and builds a foundation on a musical and pedagogical level.
Vocally, I follow a classical technique, but use that foundation as a basis to meet the goals of the singer for the style they want to achieve.

Beau S.

Attleboro, MA

About Beau

*** Lesson Details ***
I studied music performance at UMass Dartmouth. I have the tools and resources to teach the students what they need to know in order to teach themselves. In lessons, I focus on what the student wants to learn, however for younger students I tend to stick with the methods books for a while.
I am a big fan of applying relevant elements of music theory to the music we're learning: it helps to understand the science behind the music. Noticing patterns and understanding common terminology will make it easier to learn pieces and play with other musicians.

*** Studio Equip
ment ***
Kimball baby grand piano.
I can teach at my house in Attleboro as well as come to you.

*** Specialties ***
Music theory and classical piano. (Classical and pop)

Stan M.

Coventry, RI

About Stan

Hi! I am a private music instructor offering lessons both in-studio and online. I hold a Bachelor of Music degree from Berklee College of Music (Summa cum Laude) and I have over 34 years' full-time experience as an instructor.. I also have nearly decades of experience as a professional jazz, rock, and theater musician. My experience has taken me from nightclubs to concert stages, as well as on television, radio, and recording studios. Finally, I am a published author with several titles dedicated to helping musicians becoming the best they can be.

**** MY TEACHING STYLE ****

My teaching
style is often referred to as laid-back, gentle, informative, and very supportive. My focus is on enrichment, encouragement, and great results. I don't work with “one-size-fits-all” methods. Each lesson is customized to make the most of each student's own unique abilities, limitations, preferences, and interests. Whether students prefer, or do better, with traditional materials, playing/singing along with their favorite recordings, jamming with me, or anything in between, I am more than happy to accommodate and bring out each student’s best!

I teach real music -- students begin playing music they love almost from day-one. For example, many of my piano and guitar students pride themselves on learning to play every song on Beatles One ... playing right along with the CD! Reading, playing by ear, improvisation (jamming), singing while you play ... there are so many ways to play and avenues to explore in music.

**** MY STUDIO ****

My studio is spacious (very spacious – no cubicles here!), well-appointed, and very quiet. Unlike music stores and multi-lesson facilities, there are no other lessons on the premises, no drummer going crazy on the other side of the wall. This means students can concentrate better and learn faster. There is also plenty of room for parents and siblings who may wish to sit in on lessons.

**** STYLES / GENRES ****

I believe that students make the most progress learning music they love and I am very happy to teach every student the style of music he or she loves most.

My most requested genres are: pop, rock, country, blues, film/television, classic rock, jazz, and classical. Some students arrive knowing exactly what they want, but most are happy to explore various styles that interest them in search of the perfect fit. It is not at all uncommon for a student to spend part of their lesson polishing up a Beethoven piece or jazz standard, then finish up playing the chords to “Hotel California” along with the CD. Another student might start off their lesson learning a Taylor Swift hit, then move over to doing some blues improvisation. Variety is a wonderful thing and it is highly encouraged.

**** MY STUDENTS ****

Over the years, I have taught students from four years old to eighty-somethings. I’ve taught absolute beginners (most of my students start from square-one), hobbyists, seasoned professionals, even a Grammy nominee and a Grammy winner! Many of my young students have gone on to perform in school bands / jazz bands and/or professionally. In all cases, they acquire a skill that will last for a lifetime and provide joy, enrichment, and satisfaction.

Do you have a song or two in your heart. Contact me today and I will help you reach your musical goals no matter what they may be!

I look forward to my lesson every week and the time spent there just flies by so fast. Stan is very interesting and gives me a lot of information to help me understand music historically and in practice. He tailors his lesson to me. A great teacher! Thanks Stan!
