I teach legit musical theatre, with an emphasis on classical technique. I do teach how to belt, but I believe in using it sparingly.
*** Lesson Details *** NOTE: I prefer to teach students ages 11 & up. I will accommodate younger students, but as vocal development is a direct reflection of physical development (the instrument is the body), we will be unable to delve deeply into technique. Instead, the curriculum for younger students will include musicianship and piano skills; they will be more of music lessons that incorporate singing rather than "vocal" lessons. My current studio consists of all sorts of singers including classical, musical theater, R&B, and pop. In classical voice lessons, we will be learning songs n
ot only in English, but also Italian, German, and French. Classical voice lessons may not be for everyone, however, and we will learn repertoire that suits the interests of each student.
I emphasize a basic knowledge of music theory, because it's important for a singer to not only know how to sing, but to also understand the music he or she is singing. I will incorporate music theory into the lessons, starting with basics such as learning how to read notes.
I believe in making sure the singer is comfortable and confident. The environment you will be learning in is open and non-threatening because a singer needs a place to explore his or her voice. I encourage my students to make mistakes and to keep the lines of communication as open as possible. Singers are perfectionists, and we're constantly telling ourselves what we do wrong- we don't need someone else enforcing that negativity.
I concentrate on a classical vocal technique, with proper posture, efficient breathing, lack of facial and body tension, and healthy vocal production. I believe that it is important to have a strong foundation of healthy technique no matter what style of singing. My teaching style and lesson focus will be different for each individual person, and I'm very flexible in adapting to each singer's needs and personality.
I am a very understanding teacher, and very patient, but I will push you to work to your potential! What you put into these lessons and your practicing is what you will get out of it. I am not strict, but I do expect dedication, passion, and respect. I am a very enthusiastic and energetic teacher, and lessons with me will be fun, productive, and encouraging.
If I sound like the right teacher for you, please arrange a trial lesson to see how well we work together!

I have been working with Belinda for a little over 2 years. Every lesson, she challenges me to be better than before. What I love most about her style, is she customizes her style of teaching for the student. I am a very imagery oriented person, and she always helps me to visualize things in ways that makes sense to me. My singing has dramatically improved during my time with Belinda, and I would recommend her to anyone in a heart beat. Every lesson is different, every lesson is challenging in a new way, and every time I walk away feeling like that was the best lesson I've ever had. Thank you Belinda!!

From the very first lesson, my daughter felt that she was learning a great deal from Belinda. Belinda cares about her students and is good with different styles of singing. She's always very professional, but fun at the same time.
I can help you belt and mix. I can help you improve your stage presence. I can help you with monologues. Any aspect of vocal musical theater!
Dear Students and Parents:
My passion for performing and teaching brought me to TakeLessons as a way to enrich the Baltimore community (and beyond through Skype lessons!) and help individual students perform at their best. As an operatic performer, I thoroughly understand the importance of building a strong technical background for any level of singing or professional speaking. My other skills, like instrumental instruction, studying skills, accent reduction, and academic preparation are all offered through TakeLessons as well. As a teacher, I love having fun in lessons and building stro
ng connections with my students at absolutely any level. My personal musical performing experiences span opera, musical theater, jazz, pop, and R&B. I am so excited to share my knowledge and passion for singing with you, as well as any other subject we find to explore! As of February 2013, I am also available through TakeLessons' online instruction program! Please find more information below and I hope to hear from you soon!
A native of Charlotte, NC, Zachary began his musical career as a tuba player and jazz bass guitarist. While attending The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Zachary began singing in various vocal groups on campus and developed his love for the singing voice. With encouragement from the music faculty, Zachary began training as an operatic baritone while at UNC. While attending UNC, Zachary was awarded both the Fischer Scholarship in Voice and the Tony McDowell Voice Scholarship. His singing brought him to Boston in the summer of 2010 to begin study at The Boston Conservatory. While performing various opera roles and attending summer programs, Zachary also opened his private studio and taught at a local music academy. He will sing the role of Marcello in The Boston Conservatory's production of La Boheme in April 2013, as well as a February opera scenes program which will include Cosi fan tutte and The Pearl Fishers. Baritone Zachary B. is quickly establishing himself as an active operatic performer. Equally at home on the recital stage, his versatile lyric baritone voice fits a wide range of repertoire and styles. A graduate of The Boston Conservatory, Zachary has performed roles like the titular role in Don Giovanni (2012), Ramiro in L'Heure Espagnole (2012), L'horloge comtoise in L'Enfant et les sortileges (2012), Pooh-Bah in The Mikado (2011), and Bob in The Old Maid and the Thief (2011). Most recently, Zachary performed Character #7 in the ensemble chamber opera Transformations (Conrad Susa).
Starting in February 2013, Zachary will also be available through TakeLessons for online instruction. Lessons will still focus on energy, breath, and solid technique, so please contact him if you think this venue of instruction will be a good fit!
*** Lesson Details *** Regardless of your background, I believe in making lessons fun, encouraging, and accessible. This means that my work with you will, by nature, be incredibly personal and always formulated for your specific musical goals. I will constantly strive to make sure you are comfortable in our work together as we explore singing, speaking, and music theory.
I believe every singing or speaking voice can benefit from a foundation in classical vocal technique. Whether you prefer to learn through singing songs or through various exercises, I can customize our lesson plan to fit your needs. Therefore, I provide a fun and engaging lesson atmosphere, but you need to bring your best as well! We will both be happier with the process if we are equally invested in your growth. We will start with something you already know (an aria, vocal exercise, or excerpt from a song) and work toward singing in your preferred vocal style. For example, classical singers will build their knowledge of English, German, Italian, and French diction and song styles. Additionally, I will always respect and include my student's musical interests.
Along the way, I am happy to address basic music theory ideas. If you prefer, we can also spend additional time reviewing and learning those principles to enrich your musical experience. I will always provide different exercises and ideas to keep your brain active in the singing process.
I believe in whole body, whole spirit singing. As a performer, I employ a variety of holistic exercises and theories to develop my own voice, such as basic Alexander Technique principles, voice therapy techniques, a variety of pedagogical palates, and energy work. If these sorts of things interest you, I am more than happy to incorporate them into our lessons. My personal results with those practices have been incredible, so I am always eager to share.
My personality is outgoing and energetic, so I bring that sort of atmosphere to a lesson. I expect preparedness and readiness on your part to maximize our work together. My greatest desire in teaching is to see you grow! So, if a challenging, yet comforting, work environment sounds like something you would like to try, consider scheduling a trial lesson with me. I am always happy to hear from new students!
*** Studio Equipment *** Open area between the living room and the dining room, seating available, piano to accompany the voice lesson, garage/driveway/street parking.
*** Travel Equipment *** I prefer for my students to have a keyboard or piano, and if possible, a music stand. We can always make a situation work if the student does not have access to these tools. I provide music, pencils, etc.
*** Specialties *** I am an opera singer, and specialize in classical singing. However, I apply similar vocal technique to all genres of music, and focus on breathing technique, body and energy awareness, and discuss a holistic approach to singing with all students.

This is fun music! Learn how to do it without going losing your voice…or your friends.
Acting – I have taught all kinds of acting, including Audition Skills, Shakespeare, Stage, Film & TV, Dramatic, Comedic, whatever. I also have quite a bit of experience performing in all those arenas.
Voice – Anyone can sing. I you want to and have always thought you couldn't, you will be delighted when I prove you wrong. If you're a serious singer, no matter what kind of singing you want to do, you should train classically. It's just the best way to train those delicate muscles. I am an excellent coach, at any level. I will teach you how to OWN the song. That's what keeps people coming b
ack. However, as an instructor, I am better with beginners.
Speaking – Ever lost your voice because you were talking too much? Every professional speaker I know of has. YOU DON'T HAVE TO. It's simply a matter of knowing the correct way to produce the sound. That's easy for me to teach.
Writing – I have been a professional writer and editor for over eight years; I have books, articles, posts, newsletters, etc. published. The point of grammar is to facilitate communication, NOT to be right. I can teach you practical grammar, not just correct grammar. I can show you how to make your words flow and be easily read. If there are typos in here, please understand you should never proofread your own work.
Nutrition/Alternative Medicine – I have been in this field for over 25 years. I am certified as a Sports Massage Therapist and most of my experience is in that area, but over the years, I have garnered quite a bit of usable knowledge.
Meditation – There is no one right way to meditate. You don't even have to be still to meditate, although it's a good place to start. We'll find a way(s) that's right for you.

As a lifelong singer and University of Maryland music graduate, when I teach a person how to sing, I always start helping them build their "vocal house" by obtaining a firm understanding of the anatomy of their vocal instrument. Soon to follow, I help them establish a strong foundation in breath control. Once solidified, with singing techniques I help the student ensure the walls of their "vocal house," are strong enough to support their singing any genre of music with confidence.

As a Professional Stand Up Comedienne and Off-Broadway Award Winning Solo Performer, I rely heavily on my vocal health for optimal performance. Allan Van Johnson has instructed, educated and trained me vocally for the last 17 years, affording the practical, applicable techniques and strategies I need to be successful. My creativity and voice allow me to consistently work in an industry that can be undoubtedly competitive and unrelenting. Allan's expertise and personal care has given me the staying power I need to continue in all of my comedic and musical theatre endeavors. Under his tutelage, I have won 3 awards and one Off-Broadway award. I am certain that without his instruction, I would have faired differently.
Lastly, his training and consistent personal and professional development keeps him on the cutting edge of vocal health, performance and instruction. I highly recommend Allan Van Johnson for all of your vocal needs.

"LeAnna is definitely a good teacher to start with!
I have taken singing class with LeAnna for about two months and it was definitely a positive experienc
e. LeAnna is a good teacher to start with and I've learnt lot from her.
LeAnna is a very easy-going and encouraging instructor. She would try to find something good in me every time and appreaciate it. She would also find something I was doing wrong and point it out directly instead of like it vanish in the appreaciation. So I feel energetic and know what to improve at the same time. Moreover, LeAnna's teaching environment is quite comfortable. It is a clean, tidy, and quiet room. I wouldn't feel nervous there. And, there is plenty space where I could move within and sing quite comfortable.
An an instructor, LeAnna has good exercises which would build my technique little by little. She would offer a group of exercises for a specific training area and they are not difficult and seem easy to do. I would not feel practicing those exercises sucking too much of my energy. But, when I came back to sing, I would feel that without noticing, I could done what I couldn't done before, which was pretty amazing.
LeAnna is also reliable and knowledgeable of the industry. She is not only an instructor but also the singer/dancer/actor who do shows. She would tell me how this industry is like, what and how to prepare for the audition, and what details I should focus on (i.e. Don't change schedule after you have been confirmed with the stage manager) and what aspect I don't have to worry (i.e. I could go to another audition if you are wating for another result; just tell them you are waiting.) This helped me a lot to know what the custom is like in this area."

"My 12 year old daughter had the ability to sing but lacked everything else - technique, acting, strength, and stamina - That's where Pierce came in. He ta
ught her how to emote when singing, how to control her expressions and how to sing with confidence. His care and commitment meant the world to my daughter - she had someone in her court that had a vested interest in her success. As a mother, that meant the world to me. Pierce is wonderful - he is upbeat, hugely talented, and a joy to work with. I would recommend him any and everyday."

"Fawn is a refreshing change and one of the best instructors we have ever known
After going through a barrage of music instructors, Fawn was a refreshing
change. Our family has been taking piano, voice, performance and songwriting lessons from Fawn for 3 years now. My husband, myself and our son and daughter are her students and we all adore her. She has a lovely spirit and kind heart. She pushes us each in our own individual ways to be the best we can each be, and she always checks in to see how we are doing on a personal level too. She is such a positive person, her energy could light up an entire city. I donât know any one that works harder. I think hearing her songs on the radio, seeing her perform and work hard at her own successful music career, as well as work hard at helping her students achieve their best is one of the things that motivates me to work harder. Fawnâs attitude is, âanything is possible if you believeâ. Not only do we believe, but we believe in her. She is the best candidate for the job and this household deeply appreciates her."

"My lessons with Denise have been great. I took lessons under the intention of performance in musical theater, and in under five lessons she was able to ge
t it professional-ready. By no means does that mean that I'm done with lessons though.
She teaches classical technique as the foundation and tells you specifically how your body function in order to produce sound, primarily using imagery to help you control functions that most people are not actively aware of. Lessons consist of exercises, explanations, and application to songs. She also answers questions and concerns over Skype, even responding to a practice video I sent to her.
Denise will help you reach your goals. If you are looking into singing seriously (and even if you're not), daily practice and preparation for the next lesson is essential to making progress and Denise wants to see you progress. If you are a newer singer, she works with you to build confidence in your voice as well as the technique. Like any good teacher, she can also tell when you haven't put in the work, but will still be patient and invested in the lesson.
Because my goal is musical theater, she helps me to expand my repertoire and work on songs that I bring in for auditions. She also reminds me to take into consideration other aspects of the performance such as dancing while singing and the long-term nature of performance, which makes certain aspects of technique especially important.
I am in my second month of lessons with her. I took 30 minute lessons, which go by very fast. Good for beginners just trying it out, but serious students should look into longer sessions. Skype is hardly an issue and is actually helpful because what she hears is closer to what you might sound like on a microphone. Denise is the kind of person who would go over the lesson time in order to finish an explanation so you leave with a good understanding of the content. Highly recommended for beginners (and advanced students I'm sure) and I look forward to our future lessons!"

"I have a strong music background through instrumental music and choral singing. Tina has taught me to be a soloist singer, and my auditions and performan

I highly recommend Tina for singers at any level because she clearly communicates her feedback and her commitment to her students' success."
