Maria H.

Sacramento, CA

About Maria

With more than 20 years of teaching experience for the cello, I have taught students of all ages, throughout California and overseas. I earned a Bachelor's degree and a Master's degree in Cello Performance and am currently the Principal cellist for the Camellia Symphony, California. In addition, I am teaching all levels of cello and beginner violin lessons to my students in Folsom, Napa and Sacramento.

My professional performing experience began in Medellin, Colombia in 1985 with the Medellin Philharmonic Orchestra where I was their Soloist beginning in 1992 and later on, as First Cel
lo, from 1998-2002.

While in Colombia, I also performed with the Antioquia Symphonic Orchestra and the Antioquia Chamber Orchestra from 1991-1999.

I left my hometown of Medellin to come to the United States where I performed with the Texas Christian University Orchestra in Fort Worth, Texas in 2000. Returning to Medellin, I spent the next year with the Eafit Symphonic Orchestra.

Finally, I settled in Sacramento in 2003, coming here to earn my Master's Degree in Cello Performance while performing throughout the next year with the California State University, Sacramento Symphony.

In Sacramento, I have also performed with the Sacramento Metropolitan Orchestra and with several other chamber groups.

At this time, I am teaching all levels of cello and beginner violin. My students range in age from six to seventy years and enjoy learning in a relaxing environment at their own pace.

I incorporate several different teaching styles to meet each students' individual needs and abilities.

*** Specialties ***
cello, violin
Suzuki for kids and traditional classical style.

Maria was my first private cello instructor and I studied with her for 2 years. She is an extremely kind and warm teacher who made every lesson very enjoyable and immensely educational. She was very open to my ideas as well as my wants and needs as far as playing repertoire and pacing. It is rare to be taught by a professional performer that is quite so active in the area they teach; Maria's experience performing professionally has obviously given her a perspective that is valuable to any of us who want to excel at an instrument. It is a joy to see her perform and learn from her that way as well. I and all of her students had the opportunity to get our own performing experience in her recitals, which were fun and important to my musical growth. I am grateful to have started my education in cello with Maria's instruction; I am much better off because of it.

Maria has been my cello teacher for 6 years. She has made learning the cello so much fun and such a great part of me life. She is very positive and sweet even when I mess up and she helps me feel good about my mistakes. She looks at what I do well and gets me excited about working on the songs. She always helps me stay in perfect pitch and helps me prepare for when songs get harder, by making sure I have good tequnique. She always knows what to work on to make my lesson as successful as possible. After six years of playing with her I am playing this amazing and beautiful music. The Bach Cello concertos and the other songs I play make me feel so happy relaxed and filled with joy. She loves the cello and being a musician. And every time you go to her lesson, you just feel the love she has for the instrament and the music and how she wants to share that feeling with you and help you have the same feeling. Maria is the reason I can play so well and she is also the reason I have continued to play for so long and will continue to play for the rest of my life. I am so happy that I have the most amazing, loveing and fun teacher in the world. I think everyone thinking of playing an instrament should choose cello just so they can take lessons with Maria. My lesson is the highlight of my week.

JoAnn R.

Carmichael, CA

About JoAnn

Your lessons are designed to help you develop the skills and confidence you need to successfully perform in public. I work hard to prepare your lessons and I ask my students to invest daily time working on skills studied at their lessons. Performing music requires the patient integration of multiple skills over time, however, the rewards are BIG.

During your lessons you will receive instruction in skills needed to sing or play the cello as well as musical skills including rhythm, melody, harmony and style. Because there is a lot to learn, I encourage you to consider 45 or 60 minute les
sons, which I offer at substantially reduced rates to make them more affordable for you.

I continually update my teaching methods by attending workshops and master classes and I incorporate my knowledge of human anatomy and function, to help you perform with minimal strain. Also, I incorporate internet resources in your lessons to keep them interesting and up to date.

What will your lessons be like?
At your first lesson we will explore and name the parts of your instrument (voice or cello). We'll talk about what you would like to learn, set attainable goals and select songs that you will be successful learning.

In subsequent lessons you will warm up with scales and exercises, using common intervals with basic rhythms to improve your technical abilities and gain musical skills and knowledge, such as hearing pitches and intervals and keeping with the beat. This will also help you learn to read music.

Singers will learn to use breathing to coordinate with your vocal folds to make a beautiful tone and sing on pitch, relax your throat and tongue to create resonant chambers, shape your mouth and tongue to color the tone, and use your tongue and lips to form the words.

Cellists will learn to transfer your body weight into your cello to produce a mellow tone, placing your hands and arms on the cello and bow in a relaxed and balanced manner to allow you to play smoothly and in tune and to prepare you to produce a lovely vibrato. Since cellos don't have frets, you will also learn to locate each note on the cello but just a few notes at a time - until you know them all.

You will learn to use your technical skills and knowledge to create musical phrases that sound beautiful and authentic and are fun to perform and listen to. You will need to practice simple skills and phrases repeatedly until they become habit. I will lend you my kind and patient support to help you through the bumps in the road.

Not sure how to practice at home?
To support your practice at home you will: Receive a recording of each lesson to practice with; Learn simple exercises you can do at home; Learn to create and use simple backup tracks of your songs to learn to hear rhythm and harmony; Learn how to use your computer at home to get feedback for pitch, and tone quality.

Nervous about performing?
When you are comfortable I will provide opportunities to perform in student programs performing for friends and families.

You will have opportunities to participate and perform in workshops which include performance opportunities, lectures, demonstrations and Master Classes with nationally recognized teachers and performers. And students can earn Certificate of Merit which are recognized by universities.

s well. One of my sisters is special needs with autism and mild CP. I understand the difficulties children with special needs can face in school especially in math and language arts. I am currently studying at Sierra college with a major in computer science. I love teaching and learning and helping people succeed. There is no greater accomplishment than helping someone go from staring blankly at the task in front of them, to them suddenly grasping it, sharing in their success and sense of accomplishment is magical.

Sunnie W.

Rocklin, CA

About Sunnie

Sunnie had a humble start growing up in the small town of Grass Valley, CA northeast of Sacramento where throughout grade school she was a dedicated member of the choir. She went on to enroll in the Bachelor of Arts degree program for music at California State University, Sacramento. During her higher education, Sunnie supported herself by working at Starbucks Coffee Company where she's held a position for six years. At the same time, she worked hard to engrain herself into the vibrant music scene throughout the Greater Sacramento area.

After graduating in December 2013 at the age of 23,
she immediately enrolled in the Commercial Recording program at American River College in Sacramento. At the same time, Sunnie embarked on a six-month long internship at Sacramento's J Street Recorders under the supervision of owner/operator Brian Wheat, bassist for the internationally acclaimed rock band Tesla. She assisted in the recording of Tesla's latest album, Simplicity, and earned an assistant engineer album credit.

Additionally in early 2014, Sunnie was hired as a lead vocalist in Sacramento's most well-known and active entertainment band, the award winning Hip Service. With the group, Sunnie has performed for thousands of people throughout the country. She has performed along-side renowned artists such as Juan Escovedo and Naughty by Nature. Her past audiences include Condeleezza Rice, Google and the City of Sacramento. Never one to be complacent, Sunnie is also an avid songwriter and has worked with several local and regional producers to record and release her original work.

Currently, Sunnie is gigging with Hip Service, teaching voice to her own roster of private students, and finishing the last semester for her degree in Commercial Recording. She is looking forward to seeing where her music will take her this year through her work as a performer, engineer, songwriter, and vocal instructor.

Sunnie truly understands the importance of healthy, accurate singing when it comes to live performance and uses this as an underlying theme in every lesson she gives. She also emphasizes artistry and expression so that her students are not only singing in a healthy way but they are making art at the same time!
