I am a professional drummer with experience in all styles of music. I can teach you what you want to learn!
Claudio R. is a recent transplant to SF from NYC/Seattle. He was born in Massachusetts and studied classical violin from the age of 6. He attended Vassar College where he earned a degree in violin performance. During college he started playing the drumset because of his infatuation with Jazz. Claudio went on to attend the prestigious Jazz and Contemporary Music program at the New School In NYC and studied drum set under Chico Hamilton, Joe Chambers, Ari Hoenig and Peter Retzlaff.
During his fifteen years in NYC Claudio was the house drummer for Freestyle Mondays, NYC’s longest running h
ip hop open mic, and performed and toured with variety of artists in many different genres.
-Hip hop legends Slick Rick, Lauren Hill, Praswell (Fugees), Doug-e-fresh, -Adam Duritz (counting Crowes), Jason Mraz -Jazz greats John Hicks, and Gary Bartz
-Afro-pop band Chris Berry and Pangea -Tropical chart-toppers Xtreme, -Southern singer/songwriter Lipbone Redding -Indie rock band Jonny Lives
In Seattle Claudio was the in-house studio drummer at Robert Lang’s recording studios. As a result of his recording work he became a voting member of the GRAMMY board in 2012.
In the Bay Area Claudio currently plays with swing band The Klipptones, and works as a freelance jazz drummer.
Claudio taught basic musicianship and drumline in NYC public schools for nine years, and was a private drum instructor for three years at Donn Bennett Drum Studios, Seattle's premier drum shop.
His teaching goals for drumset include establishing reliable technique that is useful in all styles, understanding differences and similarities between music styles, developing strong time and rhythm (through transcription and metronome games).
Claudio is also adept at incorporating electronic elements in acoustic playing and can coach students on how to use programs such as Ableton Live in their setup for performances and as a practice tool.
*** Lesson Details *** Welcome!
I’m looking forward to helping you learn drum set. I’m an engaged, patient, and enthusiastic teacher. I teach all styles of music and, together, we will get great results.
At the first lesson I ask new students about their goals. It’s important to me to discover why you are interested in lessons, and what type of music you wish to explore. I will ask you for a playlist of songs you’d like to learn and, from that, I’ll create a lesson plan that will teach you fundamental technique and the particular skills you need to play the songs you love.
Later, I’ll introduce new musical styles and you’ll learn more about the role of drum set in music. I think it is important to understand music (and related drumset styles) in context, so I’ll frequently play examples of classic recordings and we’ll have conversations about the history of the instrument and the great drummers who changed the music through the drums.
Nurturing your passion for drums and music is my number one goal for beginning students. I like to do this by finding a simple song for the student to play along with and give the student their first “grooving experience” by having both of us play along to the same song at the same time.
Also covered: beginning technique, basic rudiments, music theory, basic beat playing. I also encourage free improvisation on the drumset and teach the student how to create his/her own musical piece.
Intermediate students will: develop more flexibility in their time keeping by working on independence exercises, solidify reading basics, learn new styles (good for cross training), and examine stick mechanics more closely. Students will update their repertoire playlists to more challenging material as they gain new skill. We’ll set goals together based on the songs they want to learn how to play.
Advanced students will learn advanced stick technique including the moeller stroke, advanced finger technique, and advanced rudiments. We discuss how to improve time and feel by playing a with a displaced metronome as well as how to use the metronome in other non-traditional ways.
Also covered: over-the-barline phrasing, odd groupings in even meters, even groupings in odd meters, latin drum styles, metric modulation, triplet based styles such as jazz and afro-cuban 6/8, and studio recording. Advanced students will also examine some of the modern modern drumset vocabulary (drum and bass, dubstep etc, blast beats etc.) and the drummers responsible for those styles.
I love music and I love sharing my passion for music with students, young and not-so-young. It's thrilling to see students progress in their abilities. In order to make progress, you must practice regularly. Practicing everyday for 20 minutes is much more effective than practicing 3 hours the day before the lesson.
*** Studio Equipment *** 2 drums sets, congas, shakers, bongos
*** Travel Equipment *** practice pads, basic drum set if necessary.
*** Specialties *** When I teach drums I focus on mechanics, time, sound, feel, and coordination. I specialize in jazz, hip hop, funk, pop, electronic and rock music. I try to show my students the similarities between music styles and how mechanics, time, sound, feel, and coordination apply to those styles.
For violin I use the Suzuki repertoire and incorporate music literacy at the same time.

I had the great fortune of studying under Claudio, who has been an excellent teacher and mentor. I started out playing the drum set months ago and went to a Claudio as a beginning student. He did a lot for my drumming techniques and really set me on the path to becoming a discerning learner. I went to his studio each week, and worked at a pace that allowed me to really get a hang on the materials. We worked primarily on stick control, bass drum techniques, and on getting the right tone on the kit. Through that he instilled in me an intuition for what good technique is about, which is proving to be tremendously helpful in my playing. All through he has been a patient, engaged, and nurturing teacher who is serious in helping his students learn.
Claudio has been a wonderful source of motivation, and I consider myself very lucky to have him as a teacher. I'd highly recommend him to students interested in getting better at playing the drum set!

Claudio taught my son drum in the Seattle area. He is a great teacher! He's both very knowledgeable and very patient. He is easy going and friendly. Even after he moved to the Bay area, when he would come back to Seattle, he would contact us to see if we wanted a lesson. He's that dedicated.

Vir is beyond your typical vocal coach. He was a huge help on things like pitch accuracy and phrasing, but more than anything, his focus on getting me to tap into and harness my inner power has already paid huge dividends in my recordings and performances. Further, Vir is an amazing person to know and his home-studio in Berkeley is magnificent!

Matthew Fisher-Keller has been teaching my 5 & 6 year old to play piano since August.
He is amazing with my children who have completely different temperaments. He is able to keep them focused, motivated, and interested which is no simple task. He approaches each lesson with passion and excitement which is infectious. He is loving and kind but never a push-over or disciplinarian. He is able to communicate with them on their level and still keep them progressing in their lesson plans. My kids actually get on the piano at random times and crank out tunes even when they don't have to practice. I am so thrilled with their growth. He is ALWAYS on time and an excellent communicator. He keeps his schedule and gives ample notification should there be any conflicts so that you can reschedule lessons. This has been an added bonus for a Mom that is juggling so many extracurricular and school activities. I am thankful for Matthew and would recommend him to ANY parent or person seeking a piano teacher.
"I teach all styles of drumming, but I try to match the student with the style that they love. It’s that love of music that will push them to try harder, reach farther and become a true musician. My students have the opportunity to learn how to read, write and transcribe drum charts as well how to maintain and tune their drums. I teach my students how to play along with recordings and encourage them to join a band or ensemble so that they can experience the joy of music from the start."
I have been a teacher and performer in the San Francisco Bay area for over 30 years.
I teach Rock, Blues, Jazz, Funk, Latin, and Classical styles on drum set and percussion instruments.
I provide all of the sheet music as well as the recordings that I utilize for the student's assignments.
I also provide Sibelius drum music, so that the student can play along with the music with their Ipad or other device.

Carmen is top notch! She has been teaching our children for five years, and has been extraordinary all the way. It began when she personally delivered a used drum set to our home that she hand selected for us. Then it continues with her high energy and motivational techniques to make the lessons fun - yet challenging and exciting as well. Technology is engaged to maintain the experience at home.
Carmen's communication is second to none as well. We often work during the lessons and a sitter drives the kids to their lessons. Carmen makes sure to follow up with us (when needed) regarding lesson plans, areas to improve, and even readiness for future tasks. In a word - amazing!
We are so grateful to have Carmen as the person to foster in our children a lifelong love of music and an eagerness to learn about it. Thanks, Carmen!

Carmen has been teaching drums to my now 10-year old son for three years. Her patience, extensive repertoire of teaching methods always adapted to his learning style and progress, her contagious energy and her love of all things drums kept my son's motivation high and let him grow his abilities. I am very proud and impressed when he reads drums scores or figures out the beat of a song. Perhaps the two hardest parts for this young man were learning to play with the metronome and regularly practicing his rudiments. Carmen's many teacher's tricks, including books, posters, recordings, apps and well timed challenges with awesome awards have helped him stay on track.
Carmen keeps detailed notes about each of her students so her attention is always spot on and personalized. She makes herself available for any questions outside the classroom. A great person to be around and a talented musician, Carmen will find a way to make you into the drummer you dream to be.

Alan has been my 15-year-old son's drum instructor for five years now, and in that time, my son has progressed from
being a complete novice to drumming in a very decent teen band. With Alan, you get solid teaching skills, a pleasant personality, and great flexibility in arranging lessons. We love the fact that he provides instruction in our home--one less runaround for us! Alan is a musician who knows how to teach and inspire, and we recommend him without reservation."

"I'd been playing for over 16 years, and I decided to seek lessons for the first time. I studied with another teacher before Evan for over a year, not real
ly feeling like I was getting my money's worth, or that I was making any good progress.
I parted ways with this teacher after seeing Evan and three of his students blow me away at a local jazz event. His students were much younger and much, much better than I, and I knew I had to find out who was responsible for their virtuosity.
I set an appointment with Evan and we got right down to business. I explained that I thought some of my self-taught stick technique was holding me back, and although I was doing well in most of the areas, he agreed that it was holding me back.
Evan IMMEDIATELY noticed issues with my posture and grip, and not only corrected them but gave me clear, simple but challenging exercises to address them. In that one hour-long lesson, I'd already learned more than the $700+ I'd invested with the other teacher (who was similarly accredited, this wasn't just any teacher).
Next lesson, Evan helps me break through and learn 5 and 6 stroke rolls. I'd never been able to do them, and in less than an hour, I was more or less fluid with them. A couple weeks later, I'm completely fluent with them, and I continue to sign his praises every time I throw one into a fill.
I've only had a handful of lessons with Evan, but they've been hands-down the most productive time I've spent drumming.
It may seem like I'm going overboard, but I'm not, and here's why:
Evan not only has great musical taste, flawless technique, and a rich knowledge of drumming history- he has the ability to inspire and instill confidence and knowledge.
Even if someone else were a comparably skilled drummer (which i've yet to see in-person), I wouldn't trust they could be that good AND that good at teaching.
Spend your money and your time with Evan- it's impossible to regret. It's like having Einstein tutor you in math, and there's nothing lost in translation- he can teach you from any skill level to any skill level you want.
If I had an unlimited budget, I would spend all of my time in Evan's studio. Look no further."
