Nancy R.

Irvington, NY

About Nancy

Hi, everyone -- Whether you want to be a professional singer, audition for your school musical, NYSSMA, All-State chorus, college and conservatory, or whether you just want to have fun and hit those high notes in the shower, I would love to teach you. Your voice deserves to be heard!

I'm a classically trained soprano with undergraduate and master's degrees from the Manhattan School of Music, Mannes School of Music and Brown University. I've been teaching privately for seven years. I've sung leading roles with the Caramoor Music Festival, Glimmerglass Opera and the Aspen Music Festival. I st
udied voice with Uta Graf at the Manhattan School of Music and then privately with Amy Zorn of the Westminster Choir College.

My classical background gives me a sound grounding in vocal technique, but I love and teach music of all styles. My students include successful professional opera singers, rock and Broadway-style singers, teenagers singing in their school musicals and All-State chorus, as well as adults up to the age of 76 who are taking voice for the love of singing, the fun of the challenge and so they can sound great on karaoke night.

Whatever your interests and goals, I would love to help you reach them. I'm patient, kind and love to teach. I want to help you find your voice.

*** Lesson Details ***
My ultimate, overarching goal as a teacher is always to help my students express through singing what is inside themselves. I don't care whether your voice is professional quality or whether it's even "good" in the conventional sense. It's your voice. It's special. It has its own sound and characteristics. And it's how you can express yourself in sound. I want to help everyone find their strongest, most honest voice.

I tailor my lessons to each singer's particular interests, goals and challenges. Some students require and thrive with a highly technical, focused approach. Some students need to free up, which requires a more "macro" approach. Some students thrive with a fluid approach: sometimes technical, sometimes artistic, sometimes emotional.

I think the aspect of teaching that I enjoy most of all is working with the student to find repertoire that really suits the singer. I love discovering new music and introducing students to great music that they might not know yet.

*** Specialties ***
Although my training and performance experience is classical, I adore teaching any style of music. For advanced classical singers I have a great depth of experience and wide knowledge of oratorio, opera, German lied and French, English and American art songs. I have a very specialized background in baroque and classical ornamentation.

Nancy is awesome! I'm so happy I have this opportunity to tell everyone what a really great person and teacher she is. She's really demanding (but in a nice way) and knows her stuff technically, but she's also really encouraging and kind and I feel like she "gets" her students.

I'm going into my junior year at Cornell where I'm studying pre-med, and believe it or not I really feel like voice lessons with Nancy helped me get here. I love singing, but never had much confidence. I started taking lessons with Nancy my senior year in high school and she helped me sing so much better than I ever thought i could. She was really supportive of my song-writing too. I ended up getting a good part in the school musical (I went to a super competitive high school too) and performing my own songs at a couple of local venues.

Then as part of my college applications she suggested that I include a recording of me performing some French art songs by Claude Debussy. Not that I was a classical singer or was even going to study music seriously in college, but my family is French and I really like the poetry of Paul Verlaine. Nancy introduced me to some cool Debussy settings of Verlaine poems. I thought the songs would be way too hard for me, but with Nancy's help I actually sang them really well and did a good recording that I think helped set me apart in my college applications.

Now when I come back home I always have a few lessons with Nancy. (I still compose and perform my own songs) And don't tell anyone, but she's a lot better than any of the voice teachers at Cornell! Not naming names of course.

I have been taking singing lessons from Nancy for about 3 months now.
Nancy's approach to teaching is very different. She does not try to fit you in a syllabus. She patiently understands what areas you need to focus on singing and where you are in singing and works with you towards achieving your singing goals.

with Me, I am OK in identifying pitch, but had trouble calming my nerves, and that came in the way of singing my high range notes.

Nancy helped Me on this area. She always spends time in making me relax with breathing exercises before singing. I cant believe how much progress i have made in three months.

would definitely recommend for any body who is at any level of singing and would like to sing better

Excellent Voice Teacher

My teenage daughter has been taking voice lessons with Nancy for over a year. We have seen such great improvement in her technique as well as in her confidence. Nancy is very patient and provides constructive feedback which has enabled my daughter to grow vocally. I am so pleased with Nancy as a voice instructor that I now have my other daughter beginning vocal lessons with her.

Jillian V.

Dobbs Ferry, NY

About Jillian

I am a certified music therapist (MT-BC); vocal instructor (BS in Classical Voice); certified yoga instructor (200+); certified and attuned Reiki master; professional freelance editor; meditation guide. I am a person who finds joy in a variety of places, and I truly love what I do.

Music therapy has afforded me a great deal of experience working with children, teens, and adults with special needs including, autism, Down's syndrome, cerebral palsy, emotional disturbances and developmental delays.

As a voice teacher, I want to help my students settle comfortably into their own musicality
by showing them the building blocks of a solid technique, drawing particularly from the things that helped me grow as a vocalist. I want my students to feel strong in their body, comfortable and relaxed in their breath, and confident in their performance.

I have worked professionally as an editor of scholarly writing on both the college and post-college level, as well as a professional editor of multiple dissertations, and other publications. Being a creative person, I find language to be a wonderful way to express thoughts and emotions as well as communicate deeply with others.

As a certified yoga instructor, I teach in many locations throughout Westchester. I was trained at Yoga Haven in Scarsdale, New York with Betsy Kase, and earned a 200-hour certificate in Asana, Pranayama, and Meditation. I offer private yoga instruction and meditation at my home studio. My studio comes fully equipped with all yoga props, aromatherapy, and music. Hands-on-assists and personalized classes offered to deepen your experience.

It is a joy to offer Reiki to curious, open clients in need of energy healing. Reiki is a noninvasive energy healing technique totally separate of any religious affiliation and available to anyone. It is a difficult to describe the relaxing, soothing, and deep-healing effects of Reiki to someone who has never experienced. I recommend a trial for those curious with, as you know, a money-back guarantee!

*Note: If you don't see a time slot that is suitable to your needs but would like to try a session or lesson with me, feel free to register for the Flex Plan, and we will work out week-to-week times!!**

Jillian's really smart and nice

I started taking lessons with Jillian around when i started high school a couple years ago. I play french horn in school, and I'm considering studying music in college, so I definitely needed to know more music theory. I play guitar too, so we started studying songwriting, too, so that I can write some songs with my band. Jillian's so nice, and really smart, so she makes it really easy to learn! I really like classes with her.

One of the best teachers I have ever had

I am a 15 years old and have been taking lessons with Jillian for about a year and a half. I started out as a beginner and she was so patient with me and encouraged me continuously so that I can feel confident in myself. She also made the experience so much fun, while other teachers I've had made it stressful. She is also so knowledgable and talented but never made me feel bad that i wasnt at her level. Jillian is also cares about all her students and their progress. I cant recommend her enough to everyone who wants to learn!!

John L.

Hastings on Hudson, NY

About John

Hello,

Thanks so much for taking the time to inquire about studying music with me.

Music and studying music has always been a passionate experience for me. I have been so blessed with the teachers and fellow musicians in my life. You should realize that your study of music may start with me, but it will last your entire lifetime. I hope that all of your life you will have a rewarding relationship to music and the spirit of great sounds!

I have performed in great jazz clubs in New York, on Broadway, and performing arts centers across the country. I'm currently playing in many great p
erforming ensembles. I have put out two CD's as a leader and played on multiple CD's for other artists.

It has been my pleasure to teach privately, as well as in the classroom for 15 years. I enjoy performing many different types of music. I pride myself on being very open minded in terms of musical taste. Never apologize for liking what you like! I bet there is something in that music which is great. I can't wait to learn something from the music you introduce to me.

I be glad to provide a full resume to anyone who requests it.

*** Lesson Details ***

My most important goal for each student is that they get to where they want to be musically.

I want the student to be able to play the way he or she wants to play. If you want to learn to play one song, that is great! If you want to learn to play one classical etude that is just as great! If you want to learn how to play in a salsa band, bravo! I treat the desires of my students as my curriculum. Each student will receive special prep time from me each week. I pride myself in taking the time and energy to prepare for each meeting. Every time you complete a lesson, it is my hope that you are walking away as a better musician.

In the beginning I hope to find what will musically interests you the most. Usually, you might have a goal that requires you to play on a higher level than you do presently. If that is true, we might take some time to figure out a road map to get you to that place. Along the way, I'm sure you and I will learn many new concepts and techniques that aid you in becoming the bassist/musician you want to be.

And rest assured, the teacher always learns from the student...this is the best part of teaching: learning from the student.

*** Studio Equipment ***

Studio: 3 electric basses, plenty of amps and chords, one acoustic bass, piano, ukulele, guitar, computer playback and recording.

*** Travel Equipment ***
As requested

*** Specialties ***
I have been lucky to play tons of different types of music. I believe I can give musicians and aspiring musicians a deep understanding of what is most important in many different styles of music. Music I have been lucky enough to study and play professionally: Jazz, Rock, Funk, Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, Blues, Classical, Pop.
I'm also a very good transcriber, so if there is a song you heard on the radio we can definitely play it! Ear training could be an area in which I could be of service to you as well.
I have many arranging and composing credits and I would be glad to help students in this area whenever requested.

Love my lessons

John is an amazing teacher all around. Very professional and good at getting me to understand things which may be a bit confusing. I am currently reading and playing between four books and I never thought it would be possible especially just after taking lessons for a year. Sometimes I feel a bit frustraited when I am not able to play certain pieces or when I dont understand a concept but John is great at breaking everything down and making it easier. I am now realizing how my piano skills can be utilizied in my other music projects. When I attend my lessons I am reminded why I love having them so much. With him as my instructor I can see my skills improving and I know I will only get better. I recommend piano lessons to everyone and if you are looking to have a great teacher John is your go to person !

1st Lesson

My 1st lesson with Jason was very relaxed & professional. I learned more in 45 minutes than the last 5 months on my own in regards to reading music, rhythm, timing and playing the notes on the staff. He is very patient and knowledgeable. His diversity in music provides an understanding of where you are at and where you want to go with music. I look forward to my next lesson with Jason.

Dr. Regina is an inspiration! I began studying with her in Georgia at Shorter College and eventually transferred to Minnesota to finish my undergraduate degree with her. She is truly passionate about music, and the energy creates an incredible atmosphere for learning! She challenged me as a singer and performer and helped me learn to breathe life into the music--while also transforming my voice. She is a wonderful teacher and I would highly recommend her to anyone. Even a Skype lesson if you can't make it to her in NY. They are quiet helpful! I only wish I lived in the NY area so I could take from her in person. She is wonderful and I hope to continue studying with her for years to come.

I have been studying Voice (mostly emphasized on Broadway Singing) with Regina for a few months now and I am loving the lessons! She has really helped me identify the strong parts of my voice and showcase them while also strengthening those that are not as strong. What sets Regina apart from other teachers I've had in the past is that she does a really excellent job catering to each student's individual needs instead of having a set teaching structure that you have to try to fit yourself into. I also especially like that she will take the time to talk through the technique in a way that makes total sense and even if it doesn't at first, she'll always find a way to explain it differently until you really grasp the concept. Regina is an amazing teacher and I would recommend her to anyone who wants to push their voice to the next level!
