Kathy B.

Detroit, MI

I have been teaching violin boht in the schools and privately for over ten years. I take both beginners and intermediate students. I ask that they are able to read well as reading music can be very difficult to a new student.
I use the books String Builder Book 1 for Violin and Strictly Strings Book 1 for Violin, and Music Ace Deluxe which is a fun way to learn their music theory on the computer.
The students will learn their lines and spaces for both the Treble Clef and Bass Clef as well as the note values in their first few lessons as well as the fingering for ope n and closed strings.
I ask that the students practice everyday except the day of their lesson for only 15 minutes as their fingers are not use to it yet. Once they have been playing for awhile then I ask that they start practicing a little longer each day.

About Kathy

I am a patient, enthusiastic teacher in the following areas: piano, violin, cello, drums, music history, and music theory. I have taught vocal and instrumental music in both Catholic and Public schools, and in after-school programs, for 20 years, and have been giving private lessons for 9 years. I enjoy teaching music to all age students, and especially enjoy watching my students grow in their music ability.

I received my Bachelor of Arts from Marygrove College in Detroit in Language Arts with minors in Music Education and History, and my Masters Degree from Wayne State University in Educati
on with emphasis on English as a Second Language and Sign Language for the Deaf. I have studied Music Education for K-5 at Madonna University in Livonia, Michigan.

*** Lesson Details ***
Piano: All students start out learning both Treble and Bass Clefs, and their lines and spaces. Each student then starts to learn their major scales with both right and left hand for piano. They also learn the note values, and are able to put them together in a song. I use Michael Aaron curriculum, which takes in all of the above and their technique lessons. I use all the Michael Aaron Book One, Lessons, Theory, Technic, and Performance Books for any student that is age 6 and above and I would ask that parents would buy them from Anderson Music in Dearborn, Michigan as well as any other lesson books listed below before they come to my home for lessons.

Cello: Using String Builder and Strictly Strings, the students learn the bass clef, lines and spaces, scales, and songs. Students will learn how to hold their bow correctly.I have played cello in the Waterford New Horizons Concert Band for over six years. I have also been the only cellist they have as a member of the band.

Violin: Using String Builder and Strictly Strings, students will learn lines and spaces of the treble clef, note values, major scales, and songs. Students will learn how to hold their bow correctly.

Drums: Using Rockin’ Rhythm Raps, and using drum pads instead of drums, students will learn the correct way to hold drum sticks and the rhythms of all the notes in the treble and bass clefs. They will also learn songs to play.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Upright piano w/ seating for parents

*** Specialties ***
I enjoy teaching beginners in any area, because then you can see how far they have come at the end of the year.

Kathy is a patient and creative teacher who has provided me with continuous improvement in my piano playing through the application of music theory and basic piano exercises such as scales and arpeggios plus piano pieces which challenge and improve my ability. She has produced a marked improvement in my piano playing over the course of my lessons and I look forward to continuing that with her for the future.

I really enjoy my lessons with Kathy. She is extremely patient with me and times the time to explain the lesson plan in detail and is very specific. Kathy is very knowledgeable of music in general and would highly recommend her to others who have the desire to learn the piano and I enjoy working with her!

Kathy is a patient and considerate teacher. She applies classical piano exercises with specific music pieces and theory work to convey a complete music curriculum in a measured style combined with both praise and critique for a valuable teaching experience. Highly recommended.

Charlene G.

Macomb, MI

Experienced Violin teacher of 30 years available for eager students aged 2 through adult! I teach using the Suzuki Violin Method through book five and am certified in books one and two. I structure the lessons around each student so that they are taught at their level and speed while encouraging and challenging them to excel further.

About Charlene

Over 25 years violin teaching experience. I have successfully taught students ages 3 to adult. Anyone can learn to play the violin. Lessons in a comfortable setting, either my house or yours.

*** Lesson Details ***
Lessons are taught in my home in a comfortable setting. Parents are encouraged to sit in on lessons and are expected to help their child practice. I teach the Suzuki Method and the Suzuki book and recording are required. I will change details to suit a student, for instance I teach note reading long before a traditional Suzuki teacher would and I will add non-Suzuki materi
als into lessons if needed.

Elements of the Suzuki Philosophy
- every child (or adult) can learn
- listening and encouragement are essential
- parents are the real teachers, I am the director
- Love. I love each student and teach through my love
- accept where your child is, but challenge them to be better
- constant review and repetition of materials is essential to learning
- compete only with yourself, not your peers or parents
- character is developed as the child gains knowledge and ability

When learning music, your child is taught true self-confidence. They know they truly have achieved a great thing when they learn to play an instrument. The things they learn, such as patience and perseverance, will pour over into all areas of their lives

*** Studio Equipment ***
Young students are started out on a play violin so they can learn the proper positions before they graduate to their real violin. I will assist parents in finding the right instrument for their child.

*** Specialties ***
I have never found a child who couldn't learn music. Obviously, some will learn faster than others, but with the right encouragement and help from their parents, any child can learn to play the violin.

Bethany D.

Southgate, MI

I have taught violin for a total of 4+ years. I like teaching the string builder method, however I also have taught Suzuki as well. I believe that the students needs to enjoy what they are doing so I will let them pick songs they like to play as well.

About Bethany

I enjoy teaching and helping my students achieve their goals. I have taught for several years and like to make it an environment where students like to learn. I have a bachelors in science and graduated in 2006. Violin has been the main course of my teaching. However I have also taught piano and ESL. I love helping others discover and retain new things.

Chenyu Z.

Madison Heights, MI

-I usually use the Suzuki or Essential Elements violin books to teach but can alter the curriculum to fit your learning needs.

-I was a Texas All-State violinist during high school (state-wide competition).

-I have many years of experience playing in high school, university, and community orchestras.

About Chenyu

Hi there! Thanks for visiting my profile :)

During May 2016, nine of the children I teach performed in a recital at Evola Music Center. Parents and families really enjoyed this event so I will host another recital during the winter holidays.
If adults are also interested in performing, I will get together a group of musicians to play together. Music is too good not to be shared!

I have a Master's degree in Social Work and love building relationships with clients and empowering people. I am currently still taking piano & violin lessons from accomplished music teachers to continue learni
ng techniques to pass on to my students...I believe a great teacher never stops being a student.

Look forward to hearing from you,
Chenyu

Olivia W.

Royal Oak, MI

I have taught multiple students violin from the beginning stages. They have advanced through the Suzuki books and have been able to audition and attend Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp or audition for orchestral groups.

About Olivia

Young female professional that has a passion for teaching music. I grew up in South Korea where piano was my primary instrument. I started at the age of 5 and shortly after I learned how to play the violin. I have maintained my piano and violin skills throughout the years by participating in my college orchestra, playing for events, and teaching kids in my community. My teaching style is flexible, it all depends on the student's learning style and what they are most receptive to. I recommend parents to utilize piano/violin books that not include just performance, but theory and technique as we
ll to build a solid foundation.

Why Are There Different Violin Sizes, and Why Does it Matter?
One of the main concerns that violin students and their parents typically have is purchasing the right-sized violin. Obviously you can't give a five-year-old a full-size violin and expect him or her to be able to handle the instrument. And once kids are in their teenage years, trying to keep up with growth spurts can be extremely difficult, especially considering how much violins cost. Even adults can run into problems when selecting the right size. Fortunately, after a little research, selectin
How Can I Make Practicing Violin Scales More Effective?
No matter how much students may groan when it comes to scales, they are very important for all beginners to know, particularly for the violin. Almost all of your knowledge about playing the violin starts with learning how to play scales, from reading sheet music to better understanding the fingerings. Of course, it is not nearly as exciting as playing one of the songs you love, but practicing scales will give you a strong foundation that will help you progress and improve. Violin scales are typ
How to Play the Violin Like Lindsey Stirling
The inimitable Lindsey Stirling has shaken the world’s concept of classical music. From sold-out shows around the globe to her top-ranked YouTube video for "Crystallize," she’s come a long way since being eliminated in the quarter-finals of “America’s Got Talent” in 2010. While Lindsey has experienced a meteoric rise in the music world, her success is rooted in the same principles that have guided countless artists to virtuoso status: training with a classical instructor merged with contemporary
Beginner Basics: Steps for Buying a Violin
Your first violin purchase might seem rather daunting. If you haven't purchased a string instrument before, you may not be familiar with the different makers or size ranges. A good violin is an investment, which means that a bit of research may be required beforehand. Buying a violin will be a purchase that will bring you joy for many years to come. Knowing what makes for a good-quality student instrument before you walk into a musical instrument store will keep you from being swayed by fancy-l
