Alicia O.

Madison Heights, MI

I've been teaching violin to students of all ages for 7 years and helped students reach various goals, from succeeding in auditions to learning how to read music. Within the first few lessons, we will get acquainted and specify what your goals are. I specialize in classical music but am willing to teach any musical style the student is interested in and I love to experiment with new playing styles! I believe anyone can learn violin and that they should have fun doing it!

About Alicia

I received a bachelor's in Music at Adrian College in May, 2013. I have been playing violin for many years and have performed with several orchestras including the Adrian Symphony Orchestra. I have also performed for several weddings, benefit events and recitals. On top of performing, I have been teaching lessons for five years and really enjoying working with my students. It is really rewarding for me to see my students improve and work to achieve their goals. Sharing my passion for music, especially violin, is my goal as a tutor and I look forward working with new students!

I am really easy-going. I try to work with my students to find out what kind of music they enjoy and want to pursue. I also try to consider the goals of each individual student and tend to adjust my teaching style to their goals and aspirations. For the first lesson, I will ask you to bring music you have been working on, or would like to work on, and we will play through some of it. I will also provide music and different piece options for us to work on in the lesson. I like to let the student choose between a few selections before planning on working on a piece for an extended amount of time. My goals are to improve the students skills, reach students individual goals and most importantly: to have FUN and enjoy making music!

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have plenty of seating (parents are welcome to sit in on lesson), music stand, my own instrument (I cannot provide an instrument for the student, but I can advice where you can find one), keyboard (I will sometimes play along with my students), plenty of music

*** Specialties ***
I mostly train my students classically, but am willing to teach whatever the student is interested in. I use the Suzuki book series as well as the Muller-Rusch series for younger children.

David R.

Oak Park, MI

About David

I am happy to offer piano lessons for beginning to advanced students, and guitar and violin lessons for beginning to upper intermediate students. I teach music in all genres, including pop/rock, classical, ragtime, Broadway, country, jazz, and more - whatever you like best.

I encourage students to learn music they are interested in, and to have fun with lessons, while also making sure that they have strong sight-reading and ear training skills, and a solid classical background.

I am a former K-12 Orchestra, Band, Piano, and Choir Teacher. I taught at the Winans Academy of Performing Art
s (Detroit) and Madison Academy (Flint). I hold the equivalent of a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education from the University of Michigan - Flint with piano as primary instrument. I played piano in the MSU Jazz Band and UM-Flint Jazz Band. I was also a guitar singer-songleader at Tamarack Camps (Ortonville, MI) for seven summers, and I've played in and taught many string orchestras.

Let me know your musical goals and I will work to help you achieve them.

*** Lesson Details ***
My standard curriculum books are Alfred for Piano, Hal Leonard for Guitar, and Belwin for violin. However, if your preference is to use a different method book or teaching style, I'm happy to adjust to what you would like.

After three to six months, students on piano, violin, or guitar will know proper playing positions, the notes on the musical clefs, most types of notes and rests, and most importantly, they will be able to play at least a few real songs of progressing difficulty. After you've learned the basics, we can find sheet music at the correct difficulty level for some of your favorite songs.

I won't be strict or mad if you are not working to your potential. However, I will let you know one of the most important things about learning an instrument: "no one can practice your instrument for you." You can't even pay someone to do it, because it is impossible to transfer the knowledge. Therefore, it is very important that you work hard and practice in the ways that I will show you in the lessons. Don't worry - you'll be really proud of yourself for working hard and improving your skills.

*** Studio Equipment ***
The In-Studio lessons are taught in the living room with an upright piano, acoustic guitars, violin, and seating available. No pets. Parking on the street.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can bring method books if necessary, and provide written instructions for practice each week if they would like. The student is expected to provide the instrument.

*** Specialties ***
I am able to teach all styles of piano from classical to pop, beginner to advanced. I am familiar with many methods and can teach according to the students' preference.

I am also able to teach guitar, violin and music recording and music theory in all styles, with many different methods. I own a home studio and use Pro Tools, and I am familiar with Logic Pro and Garageband software.

Kathy B.

Detroit, MI

I have been teaching violin boht in the schools and privately for over ten years. I take both beginners and intermediate students. I ask that they are able to read well as reading music can be very difficult to a new student.
I use the books String Builder Book 1 for Violin and Strictly Strings Book 1 for Violin, and Music Ace Deluxe which is a fun way to learn their music theory on the computer.
The students will learn their lines and spaces for both the Treble Clef and Bass Clef as well as the note values in their first few lessons as well as the fingering for ope n and closed strings.
I ask that the students practice everyday except the day of their lesson for only 15 minutes as their fingers are not use to it yet. Once they have been playing for awhile then I ask that they start practicing a little longer each day.

About Kathy

I am a patient, enthusiastic teacher in the following areas: piano, violin, cello, drums, music history, and music theory. I have taught vocal and instrumental music in both Catholic and Public schools, and in after-school programs, for 20 years, and have been giving private lessons for 9 years. I enjoy teaching music to all age students, and especially enjoy watching my students grow in their music ability.

I received my Bachelor of Arts from Marygrove College in Detroit in Language Arts with minors in Music Education and History, and my Masters Degree from Wayne State University in Educati
on with emphasis on English as a Second Language and Sign Language for the Deaf. I have studied Music Education for K-5 at Madonna University in Livonia, Michigan.

*** Lesson Details ***
Piano: All students start out learning both Treble and Bass Clefs, and their lines and spaces. Each student then starts to learn their major scales with both right and left hand for piano. They also learn the note values, and are able to put them together in a song. I use Michael Aaron curriculum, which takes in all of the above and their technique lessons. I use all the Michael Aaron Book One, Lessons, Theory, Technic, and Performance Books for any student that is age 6 and above and I would asked that parents would buy them from Anderson Music in Dearborn, Michigan as well as any other lesson books listed below before they come to my home for lessons.

Cello: Using String Builder and Strictly Strings, the students learn the bass clef, lines and spaces, scales, and songs. Students will learn how to hold their bow correctly.

Violin: Using String Builder and Strictly Strings, students will learn lines and spaces of the treble clef, note values, major scales, and songs. Students will learn how to hold their bow correctly.

Drums: Using Rockin’ Rhythm Raps, and using drum pads instead of drums, students will learn the correct way to hold drum sticks and the rhythms of all the notes in the treble and bass clefs. They will also learn songs to play.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Upright piano w/ seating for parents

*** Specialties ***
I enjoy teaching beginners in any area, because then you can see how far they have come at the end of the year.

Mrs. Beckley has taught my daughter how to play the violin for several months learning notes, chords, and beginners' techniques. She is always patient as she directs my daughter's lessons. Every week she gives assignments to be practiced before the next lesson. Mrs. Beckley always says, "You are welcome to suggest music that you would like to learn instead of the assigned music piece that I assign for practice."

She said that if we have trouble finding sheet music, she will write it out for my daughter to learn. Mrs. Beckley is a very skilled instructor, and my daughter agrees that she gives great direction with skilled consistency.

I would personally recommend Kathy because i have taken piano lessons for almost 2 years and felt very comfortable with her teaching techniques for the beginner like me. And the best part is goes according to your pace of learning and gives time to catch up, which helped me a lot.

Charlene G.

Macomb, MI

Experienced Violin teacher of 30 years available for eager students aged 2 through adult! I teach using the Suzuki Violin Method through book five and am certified in books one and two. I structure the lessons around each student so that they are taught at their level and speed while encouraging and challenging them to excel further.

About Charlene

Over 25 years violin teaching experience. I have successfully taught students ages 3 to adult. Anyone can learn to play the violin. Lessons in a comfortable setting, either my house or yours.

*** Lesson Details ***
Lessons are taught in my home in a comfortable setting. Parents are encouraged to sit in on lessons and are expected to help their child practice. I teach the Suzuki Method and the Suzuki book and recording are required. I will change details to suit a student, for instance I teach note reading long before a traditional Suzuki teacher would and I will add non-Suzuki materi
als into lessons if needed.

Elements of the Suzuki Philosophy
- every child (or adult) can learn
- listening and encouragement are essential
- parents are the real teachers, I am the director
- Love. I love each student and teach through my love
- accept where your child is, but challenge them to be better
- constant review and repetition of materials is essential to learning
- compete only with yourself, not your peers or parents
- character is developed as the child gains knowledge and ability

When learning music, your child is taught true self-confidence. They know they truly have achieved a great thing when they learn to play an instrument. The things they learn, such as patience and perseverance, will pour over into all areas of their lives

*** Studio Equipment ***
Young students are started out on a play violin so they can learn the proper positions before they graduate to their real violin. I will assist parents in finding the right instrument for their child.

*** Specialties ***
I have never found a child who couldn't learn music. Obviously, some will learn faster than others, but with the right encouragement and help from their parents, any child can learn to play the violin.

What a wonderful, encouraging, patient teacher! This is our first experience with violin and the Suzuki method. My almost 6 year old came home today from her lesson smiling from ear to ear and said, "I had so much fun!" I am amazed at the sound that I'm hearing from her violin already. Charlene is one of those special teachers that all parents hope to find.

My son took violin lessons with Charlene as a preschooler through 3rd grade before we moved away from Michigan in the early 1990s. I only have the best to say about Charlene's abilities as a thoughtful, attentive, proactive, discerning, creative teacher. She loves what she does, which showed in my son's attitude about attending lessons and his continued passion for music and string instruments 20 years later.
