Jason R.

Urbandale, IA

About Jason

I started in my teens picking up my favorite songs here and there, similar to most guitarists. I did just enough so I could write songs and play them with my friends.

I played around in a few rock
cover outfits. Eventually, I was getting to the point where just a few chords wasn't enough. I needed to play a lead or melody line and I didn't know what to do. But over time, I noticed a lot of patterns in the music I was playing and in the music I was hearing. I became fascinated with sight reading, music theory, and training my ear.

I'm probably not going to teach an advanced player anything new. Can I help the beginner with their very first chords? All that and more! And can I take someone who's played tabs and help them understand how to read and understand music? Absolutely!

*** Lesson Details ***
Students will determine the pace of the lessons I give. We will set a few goals depending on experience level. My aim is to teach a song of the student's choice in chunks. My ideal student is someone who wants to learn and employ music concepts creatively.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Though I'm not currently teaching in home, everything we need I can carry or stuff in a backpack. I always have a portable recorder on me and can send a copy of the lesson to the student if requested. I also pack a metronome and a tuner.

After his first lesson, my son was very excited. He felt motivated and expressed that Jason would hold him accountable for his practice time. Jason was encouraging and has my son very eager for his next lesson.

Caitlin D.

Ankeny, IA

About Caitlin

My name is Caitlin! I have been teaching students since September 2007, and I started teaching private lessons in April 2014. I went to the University of St. Francis and earned a degree in Music Educa
tion in December 2013. I am a kind and understanding person, and I would consider my teaching style to be flexible, relaxed, yet always progressing. I would love to help you improve your musicality and technicality of your instrument and to help you reach your individual goals as well!

FLUTE LESSONS
My primary instrument is flute! I have been playing flute for 15 years. I received four years of formal university flute instruction from highly regarded flute instructors. I have privately taught flute students ranging from third grade students to adults for a year. With my training and playing experience, I am sure to be able to help you improve throughout our lessons! Students of all levels are welcome for lessons!

PIANO LESSONS
Piano is one of my secondary instruments. I started learning how to play piano while in college. I have been playing piano for 5 years now. I have taught Kindergarten to adult piano students for a year. With my music education and training, I am sure to help you improve each lesson! Beginner to intermediate level students would be preferred for lessons.

VOICE LESSONS
Voice is also one of my secondary instruments. In 2011, I started taking vocal technique, diction, and pedagogy classes for my degree. Since then, I have sung with two university choirs and two church choirs. I have three years of choir directing experience as well. I have taught vocal lessons privately for a year, with students ranging from 4 years old to 13 years old. I would love to help improve your singing!

Caitlyn has done an excellent job instructing my son on the piano. She is very reliable and Ryan really enjoys learning from her. He didn't have any formal training prior to her, and he's learned a lot, and is really enthused about playing the piano.

Wonderful. In two lessons, there was already so much improvement in my daughter's voice. And she loved her. She was compassionate and so helpful. Excellent instructor.

Edward C.

Des Moines, IA

About Edward

Interested in vocal instruction? I have served on the voice faculty at Drake University since 2007. I am an expert in classical voice and musical theatre voice/belt production. I am a professional sin
ger of opera and musical theatre, having performed with opera companies throughout the Midwest, as well as lead roles with the Des Moines Playhouse.

My teaching style? My students adore me. I am laid-back, and my sense of humor puts students at ease and creates a relaxing teaching environment where students feel free to make funny noises. We sometimes make funny sounds when performing vocal exercises. In lessons you'll learn about posture, breath management, how to form proper vowels for both classical and musical theatre repertoire, and how to resonate: using your voice and body as a personal amplification system. We can explore classical and musical theatre repertoire, but we can sing any kind of music you're interested in from pop/rock to jazz to R&B.
