Ben U.

Columbus, OH

Throughout my studies of theory and harmony, I realized how valuable it is to learn the basics of the guitar. I studied the guitar independently to learn the fingerings of the most useful chords. Students anxious to be able to play a song right off the bat are often pleased to discover that they can play through a whole song using only two or three chords. The guitar provides students with endless possibilities; they can experiment with different rhythms, never having to play a song the same way twice.

I grew up listening to classical music; I remember listening to a Mozart and a Grieg tape over and over again. By high school, I was interested in more recent popular music that carried on in the same tradition of greatness. Andrew Lloyd Webber first caught my attention. From there, I listened to the music of the ‘60s and became quite knowledgeable in the British Invasion. My ear for this type of music allows me to teach the guitar and provide students with an ample repertoire.

In my music studio, I give lessons in piano, violin, guitar, and composition. In my tutoring center, I teach in multiple disciplines, from arts and sciences to SAT prep. My in-studio lessons are given on a grand piano.

Education

BM Music Composition --“ Ohio State University, Autumn 2012
BA Classics (Greek and Latin) --“ Ohio St
ate University, Autumn 2012
Classics Fellowship --“ Indiana University, 2013-2014
Piano Training: Collegiate lessons from Steven Glaser and private lessons from George Haddad

Accomplishments

As a high school senior, under the tutelage of OSU Professor Emeritus and world-renowned pianist George Haddad, I performed the first movement of Shostakovich'™s Second Piano Concerto with the chamber orchestra.

I performed different self-composed pieces at seven OSU Composers'™ Workshops and won the Audience Favorite Award at the Johnstone Woodwinds Composition Competition in 2012. My Senior Composition Recital was performed on October 25, 2012. It showcased several of my three-movement works: string quartet, clarinet solo, set of classical songs for piano and voice, set of pop songs for piano and voice. Interspersed with these were two solo piano pieces and a duet for piano and violin.

My background makes me a knowledgeable and effective tutor. I was valedictorian at Delaware Hayes High School in 2009 and received OSU'™s Maximus Scholarship based on my ACT and SAT scores.

Travis is very talented and also very patient! My daughter loves him because he's kind and he doesn't get angry when she doesn't get it. He laughs with her and they just keep trying. He's the best teacher we've ever had (we've tried three). We'll be sticking with Travis!

Wow, where to begin...I've been taking lessons from Travis for a few years now, and I can't describe how much I appreciate this man. He is an exorbitantly talented musician, composer and producer. His compositions are breath taking. I always tell him that I'm shocked he isn't in Hollywood scoring blockbuster films. His teaching style is fantastic. He always adapts and manipulates his teaching to the student. He never just follows a book - he uses books, internet resources, his own knowledge and a piece of paper and ANYTHING else he thinks will benefit the student. If you are taking lessons on guitar - he helps explain music theory on the piano. If you take lessons on piano, he helps explain things on the guitar. His vast knowledge is just perfect for teaching music lessons. I can't recommend him enough!

Incredible. My kids love him! They are so excited to go to lessons and see him every week. He is so good with kids! In fact, he might be a better teacher than he is a musician! (Okay, at least just AS good!). I love hearing what my kids have learned after having a class with him. Highly recommend!

I have been playing for over 15 years. I have a lot of knowledge in music theory and yes I can read and teach you how to read sheet music. I love jazz and through that I have the ability to teach many different chords, scales as well as advance guitar techniques like counterpoint or sweeping. I can also teach to analyze any piece of music and make your own arrangement. Everyone will love hearing you do solo renditions of their favorite songs

Has been a great teacher for my daughter! He does a great job going at her pace and then stretching/challenging her a little. They have music theory lessons one week and then reviewing and playing the next week! It has been a good experience.

Charley's instruction was awesome! After a series of lessons 3 years back I decided to recommit to the guitar with an emphasis on praise music for use with Children and the Mission Field. Charley's laid back style and modern teaching techniques were just what I needed, he's a real pro!
