I have been very fortunate to have had some incredible teachers over the years - George Garzone, Kenny Werner, Billy Kilson, Ed Tomassi, Shannon LeClaire, and many others - and I know how much of a difference the right teacher can make.

I love to teach, and have been teaching both privately and in a school setting, as a band director, for many years. I have worked with students of all ages and levels, from complete beginners to advanced players. Whether you want to learn how to read music, improve your technique, work on your sound, practice the fundamentals, develop your soloing, or all of the above, I can help take you to the next level.

I hope to work with you!

About Dan

Originally from San Francisco, I have been playing saxophone for nearly 20 years. I have been fortunate to perform all over the world, including recent tours in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Panama, and Costa Rica, and have shared the stage with many great artists, including Danilo Perez, Kenny Werner,

I look forward to my lessons with Dan every week. I’m a beginner alto player and Dan does a great job patiently answering all my questions and giving comprehensive advice. He’s very analytical and gives you the detailed context of why what you’re learning is important and how it fits into the context of playing in a band, different styles etc. He will flex lessons based on what you need to know but also what you’re interested in. Most importantly he’s fun and just an all around great guy. He’s the man, what else can I say.

Dan is kind and caring. He was very patient going over the super basics with a brand-new player! He gave good, clear instruction, and is focused on mastering the fundamentals so players can start with good habits and good sound, and so players can make future advancements more smoothly.

Dan is a fountain of knowledge; an incredibly talented and eclectic artist. I have been struggling with alto sax for years but with Dan’s approach, I finally feel, I am making some progress. Dan tailors the lessons to fit your needs; making it challenging, comprehensive, engaging and fun. He helps me transcribe small parts of licks I like, which has been an invaluable experience for me. He makes sure that you REALLY get the material you are studying. Don’t just shake your head and say “yes”.
He is always there to answer your questions (no matter how dumb they may seem), encourages and motivates you.

I have been training on the saxophone for upwards of eleven years! I have been giving lessons since 2015, and I am qualified to teach beginners to early-intermediate players. I've earned top chairs in my county, district, and state, and students of mine have gone on to do the same in their own ensembles! I have also played in select honors bands, such as the Great American Marching Band in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. I am a skilled teacher, having served as a middle school teacher's assistant and summer camp music instructor. My prices are competitive because I simply want to share the joy of music with you or your student!

Our first lesson was great. Ashley quickly got where I was and what I needed and we were off to a great start. She gave me tips on how to seat and breathe correctly, how to place my mouth and fingers on the keys to get a better sound, and we started practicing a few notes. Within a couple of days she sent me detailed notes on what we had gone through in the first lesson and gave me some exercises for practicing. Great experience all around for a beginner like me and I look forward to keep learning from her!

If I could give Brian 10 stars, I would. He is enthusiastic, present, supportive and highly knowledgeable. Learning instruments has always been a challenge for me , but Brian makes being a banjo beginner an absolute joy. I look forward to practicing every day, and can really hear my progress - which amazes me because it's only been just over a month. I can see myself working with Brian for the long haul. He puts me at ease, and always gives great responsive tips that improve my playing immediately. I feel SO lucky to have stumbled across his profile.

If you choose to take lessons with me, your money is going toward top-notch private music instruction. My curriculum includes goal-setting meetings and check-ups to ensure that my student and myself are both doing our best to realize his or her musical ambitions. I utilize 'before and after' recordings to show my students just how far they've come without even realizing it, stirring up deeper motivation and reinforcing the power of practicing. Although I've been playing for over 15 years and now perform regularly in the NYC area, I don't expect my skills and experience to simply rub off on my students. When you schedule a lesson with me, you are working with an educator, not a performer.

About Alden

I'm a baritone saxophonist and a die-hard jazz enthusiast living in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. I graduated from Bard College with a BA in music, specifically jazz performance and contemporary composition. In addition to saxophone, I also play clarinet, bass clarinet, flute, and piano (I'm also convin

If I were to recommend a saxophone teacher to anyone, it would 100% be Alden! My son has been taking lessons with Alden for about 6 months now and I can notice great strides being made in both his playing and overall confidence. Alden's encouraging nature coupled with his love and knowledge of his instrument and music in general creates an incredibly nourishing learning environment for a student. If you are looking for a new saxophone teacher for yourself or your child, you have found the one!

"I highly recommend Julian as a saxophone teacher. My son started playing saxophone and taking lessons with Julian three years ago, when my son was 9 years old. Julian is patient with my son and has built a good rapport with him. Julian has always encouraged him to try his best and to not be discouraged when he makes mistakes, and that has made my son comfortable with Julian and confident enough to push himself. Also, Julian is reliable and punctual, and is good at communicating through text and email."

"Seth is a good dude. I came across his profile with Take Lessons a month ago, after browsing through other instructors in my area and other schools in my area. He's got the experience and knowledge, so I connected with him for an initial lesson. It was a quick one to get introductions out of the way and a good idea of goals/direction. From there we further honed our plans for my instruction in an hour lesson and are directing our sights on my upcoming auditions. Seth has shown me through simple explanations of theory that his teaching style is very approachable, and additionally, was able to show me good technical skills on working my way around the horn, which is especially useful for someone like me in my twenties who already has a few bad habits (haha). Like I said, he's a good dude, good sense of humor so I feel at ease practicing with him and his knowledge is insane! Not only for saxophone but in so many other areas of music! You'd be doing yourself a favor to take at least an hour lesson from him and see how you go."

"Well worth the time and money

Dave was able to meet me where I was and move me toward the goals I had. As as an adult learner, I went in with zero experience with the saxophone but a clear picture of what I wanted to play and somewhat how I wanted to sound. Dave has a great set-up where we have privacy to make noise (sax's aren't known for being quiet). He's able to pluck things out on the piano quickly or to pull something up on the computer or just play. I went from starting out, to wanting to play a few songs, to improvising. Dave has been very helpful and ultimately keeps me improving and moving forward. I've taken other lessons on other instruments, but I will say this is one of the better teachers I have had. He listens well and is able to articulate what he wants you to do --- not trying to be a guru, but more of a guide that keeps you on track."

Choosing a Neck Strap | How to Play Saxophone Tips

Learning how to play saxophone starts with the right equipment--namely, a quality neck strap! Read on for some helpful advice from Brookings, SD teacher Carl S...    The saxophone is a unique instrument for many reasons. One example is that the saxophone is the only band instrument that uses a neck strap. Unfortunately, the neck strap is often the most overlooked aspect of playing the instrument. One of the first things that I stress to a new student is the importance of the neck str …
