About Elise
I am a professional, classically trained soprano with a love for theater and the arts! In addition to being a performer, I also love teaching music lessons. My private vocal studio includes a range of students from young children to adults, who vary in musical aspirations and sing in many different styles, including opera, art song, jazz, blues, pop, and musical theater. My students have gone on to sing on Broadway, pursue music and theater degrees, compete and win competitions. I have extensive training and knowledge of proper vocal use, as well as a passion for teaching my students self expression through music. My students are given every opportunity to become well-rounded, performing musicians, and my goal is to give students the tools to become life long, passionate musicians themselves!

After reviewing instructor profiles, we rolled the dice (trusted our gut), and selected Elise to give private instruction to our 10-year-old daughter. I am so glad we took the risk! Elise is kind, patient, and encouraging, yet structured, prepared, and skilled. Our daughter was struggling with confidence and attempting to imitate other singers, rather than learning basic techniques to bring out the best quality of her voice. Time with Elise has been worth the investment as our daughter is maturing in her attitude and diligence about practicing. I would highly recommend Elise as an instructor for any age.

I grew up in Glenside moved to Pittsburgh for school and came back because I love it here...I've been playing for 17 years and have a smorgasbord of influences from Zeppelin to the Beatles to Phish to Radiohead to the dirty projectors to Jay Z to Kurt Rosenwinkel & John Scofield. I have been composing and working with original bands for some 11 years and play regularly in the city and up and down the east coast. I have also been teaching for the past 11 years all over the Philadelphia area. i teach from a method I derived myself from years of learning both in and out of school. I think teaching music is both aural as well as visual and encourage students to listen to music a lot. most of all i feel that music is fun and the students should enjoy learning so i incorporate their favorite artists and favorite songs into our studies. for seri
ous students I love theory and love sharing what I've discovered over the years.

*** Lesson Details ***
I'm a very laid back guy but I take my playing seriously. music is my life and there's nothing I enjoy sharing and expressing more. I learned to love playing guitar when I was 12 from the coolest guitar teacher ever. he had a vibe that i gravitated toward and encouraged me in just the right ways to get me believing in myself. I try to encourage my students the same way. music should be fun above all and sculpt my lessons to each students individual needs so that they are better equipped to succeed.

About Foster
I am a passionate and experienced music educator with over 10 years of teaching experience & over 20 years performing, a degree in classical music theory and an extensive knowledge of rock, pop, and jazz music. My teaching style is always catered to the student. With my love of theory & history, I strive for a practical understanding of what makes a song work and its cultural context. As a song-writer & composer, I also encourage creative exploration and independence. And as an active performing artist, I know that performance is a powerful motivator, so I organize biannual recitals for my students. But most importantly - I do not believe in boring lessons! Music education should always be interesting, engaging, and relevant.

I began my classical training at 7; at 16, I joined the Paul Green School of Rock Music, where I had the opport
unity to tour across the country, play at festivals like Lollapalooza, and perform with guests like Peter Frampton, Bernie Worrell (of Parliament), and Gail Ann Dorsey (bassist for David Bowie & Gwen Stefani). After I graduated, the school gave me my first teaching position.

I studied at Drexel University for 2 years in their Music Industry program, where I learned about recording and sound engineering. I then transferred to Temple University, where I received a bachelor's degree in Music Theory & Piano.

Outside of teaching, I am an active member of Philadelphia's performing arts scene as a pianist, DJ, cabaret performer, and composer. I produce 2 recurring live-music cabarets, run tech for 5 monthly burlesque & drag shows, and compose & record original music and film scores. All of these experiences contribute to my unique perspective as an artist and teacher. Recommendations from current students available upon request.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am a very flexible and patient teacher, and I like to cater my curriculum to each student's goals and taste in music. But regardless of age and skill level, creativity and fun are always my priority!

Understanding a student's personal musical taste is essential to keeping them engaged. Any song, be it classical or top 40, is an opportunity to learn performance technique, theory, and history, so I always keep an open ear to students' interests. I also love using improvisation as a tool to explore musicality, build confidence and develop self-expression without feeling like work.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Living room with piano, keyboards, synthesizers, and various recording equipment

*** Travel Equipment ***
The student must have a keyboard or piano

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in classical, rock, pop, and jazz piano, song writing, improvisation, music theory and history.

Learn to play your favorite songs, sing while playing, and write your own songs, too!

I have been passionate about music all of my life. I have been teaching guitar and piano for 10 years. I'm a doctoral student at Chestnut Hill College pursuing a degree in clinical psychology with plans to become a music therapist. I learned guitar and classical piano under 2 private teachers while pursuing my Psychology degree and music minor at Rutgers University in NJ.

Music was a way for me to find peace, structure, confidence, and an outlet for personal expression and creativity outside of my everyday life. I've grown as a person and a musician through music. I get excited when I see my students learn enjoy playing something new. I love music more than anything else and that love is something I try to bring out in my students. Once there is
love for music, everything grows naturally. I teach to help my students find those strengths in themselves to live a fulfilling life through their instrument.

***Lesson Details***

To achieve these results, you must be willing to practice 20-30 minutes a day most days each week.

***Specialties***

I specialize in teaching students to learn to play by ear and improvise songs based on their tastes, style, and ability level. I also walk students through how to write and record semi-professional quality songs with drums, vocals, guitar, and piano. Music genres I cover are mainly Pop, Pop/Rock, Folk, Blues Rock, Classic Rock, Alternative, and Classical (piano only)

*** Studio Equipment ***

I provide a comfortable, quiet room with live instruments, and playback and recording equipment. I expect students to bring a guitar, books, sheet music, picks, and a tuner.

I’m an adult viola student which is kind of different for me. I started playing again after a couple years and I’m trying to learn ways to play with other musicians. Emily has been really good with helping me focus on what I want to learn. She is patient with me and also plays with me and makes me feel comfortable in my lesson. afterwards I feel good and positive and I want to play more! I suggest her for anyone trying to be creative and wants to improve on tempo, rythm, tone etc. she’s good.

About Erik
Pianist, music director, and vocal coach, Erik was born and raised in Eastern Washington state. As a solo pianist, he has been heard all across the northwest and beyond, in cities including Seattle, Portland, Tacoma, NYC, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Philadelphia, and internationally in Prague and Salzburg. Erik has been a guest artist at Whitman College, Portland State University, The Kairos Chamber Music Lyceum, California State University Summer Arts, the West Seattle Symphony, and the Gig-Harbor Peninsula Symphony Orchestra. In addition to performing, Erik’s passion for teaching has led him to be an adjudicator for various festivals including the Washington Sonata-Sonatina Festival and the Washington Regional Solo and Ensemble Festival.

Erik most recently served as the Music Director for the National Tour of Kander and Ebb's tim
eless musical Cabaret. This production was on tour from December 2017 through May 2018 all across North America. Broadway.com's review praised the musicianship of the show, "Musical director Erik Flaten's musicians are impressive in their dexterity: At one moment, they are providing rich interpretations of the memorable John Kander score, while perhaps at the next they are playing denizens of the Kit Kat Klub or neighborhood thugs, wastrels and other folks of questionable repute. Flaten and his band are given their own richly deserved moments in the spotlight at the top of Act Two and the music director himself is given the well-earned final bow at the end of the curtain call."

Erik currently resides in Philadelphia, where he coaches and plays for a diverse range of singers. In addition to coaching and playing, Erik works as Music Director for musical theater, manages a private studio, and serves as Artistic Director of the Media Performing Arts Series. Previous successes include performances with mezzo-soprano, Angela Niederloh and baritone, Matthew Hayward in Portland, and a performance of the Grieg piano concerto with the West Seattle Symphony. Upcoming engagements on the East Coast include collaborative work with with soprano, Leah Golub.

Students of Erik have the opportunities to perform in studio recitals and workshops.

Both of my daughters love to sing. We signed up for lessons so they could learn their favorite pop songs; one of my daughters also took piano. They've learned how to hit notes easier and how to properly warm up; Lia is great at finding fun ways to keep them engaged while also still learning. The combination of piano and voice for my youngest has been really valuable. I highly recommend Lia for your lessons!

For intermediate players, I aim to build on existing skills and expand knowledge of music theory, sight reading, and advanced playing/practicing techniques. For advanced players, I work diligently to refine a pure, warm tone & help you master standard repertoire pieces and have expert playing technique.

Whether your/your child's goals are learning to play for the first time, creating a richer, darker, more beautiful clarinet tone, earning a spot in your All-District or All-State bands, or preparing college audition pieces, I am here to help!
