I've been playing with classical ensembles and rock bands since 2001. Even though I started on classical trombone and rock guitar, I have come to expand my repertoire to a variety of instruments and genres. During my time in college I performed with the University choir, orchestra, and band. I also have organized, wrote/arranged for, and performed with a variety of bands in my home state of New Mexico, as well as Japan, and the San Francisco Bay Area.
Since 2006 I have been an active teacher. This profession has taken me everywhere from working with classical guitar cla
sses in New Mexico high schools to Elementary students in Japan to a variety of private students of various musical instruments and genres everywhere I've been. Since relocating to the Bay Area in 2010, I've had the pleasure of working with lots of great students from kids to adults with a wide range of ambitions. Since 2012 I've been running my own full time studio.
Philosophy of Learning
Lessons are generally designed to work towards giving students the tools to accomplish their goals and become increasingly independent over time. While all students will study similar fundamentals regarding technique, theory, and performance, every lesson is as different as every person. What kind of music do you want to make? I'll tell you what you need to do to get there, and help you take the steps to achieve your aspirations. It's really important to know though that everyone makes their own experience. The process of learning music involves you learning as much about your own mind and body as it does any external concepts, so please keep in mind only you can move yourself forward.
I also love to help students put together a song, record, and produce it for them so that they can have a recording to share with their friends and family.
I also hold events for my students. (Check out our pictures and videos below!) Younger students have opportunities to perform for friends and family at my studio every few months. Adult students also occasionally have events where they get a chance to get together and play music as well.
Aside from in-studio lessons, students also have the option to sign up for online lessons via Skype. (*Online lessons offered during different times than in-studio lessons.)
*Unfortunately due to scheduling issues, I'm not currently accepting students for bi-weekly lessons. I can do regular weekly lessons, or occasional drop-in lessons, but bi-weekly appointments make it really hard for me to give the best scheduled times to my existing weekly students. I'm sorry for the inconvenience.

Jesse has given directions on how to successfully become a better musician. His approach and explanation on musical theories was much more understandable than what I was previously reading. Overall, I found the lessons to be very usefull.

During my undergraduate studies, I worked as a president of SUNY Albany Japanese Student Association and also worked as a TA for Japanese 101 classes, and I absolutely love to teach languages! I understand it is often very hard to find a language tutor outside of the spoken community, and I hope to provide you with the opportunity to be exposed to authentic media sources to acquire natural fluency. Hope to hear from you soon!
はじめまして & thank you for taking a moment to check out my profile! I'm originally from Tokyo Japan, and I moved to NY with my family during high school. I've completed Master's degrees in Language Education & Communication, and Bachelor's Degrees in Music Performance and Political Science. I enjoyed organizing and running language study groups in college, and experienced working as a Japanese TA for several semesters. I LOVE to teach in general, whether it's music or languages, and I personalize most of my teaching materials for individual student. Let me know what YOUR unique short/long-term goals are, along with interest topics, and we'll work it out! Thanks again, and I'm excited to hear from you!
Hikaru is down to earth, conversational and a great teacher. I have already learned so much from her. I can't say enough good things about her. If you make time to study on your own, in conjunction with her lessons you'll be picking up the language in no time at all!

My daughter loves her instructor and was very happy with her.
I've been studying Japanese got 7 years now. I can teach you basic Japanese.
I've been sewing since I was 13. I've sewn things over the years such as dresses, pajamas. I do a lot of tailoring things too. I just love to sew, and I love teaching people to sew too!
The way that I teach is to help the student develop their own style. I have students work on their own individual projects that they pick out while asking me questions that they might have while they are doing their project.
However, if they would like there is an option for me to develop lessons for the student on certain sewing techniques that the student could learn. Although, be aware that learning how to sew takes time and that all the techniques of sewing cannot be done all at once.
Then, there is the third option that the lesson could be a mix of the student doing what they want (choosing their own project) and learning some pre-designed
My first goal is to give my students all of the tools they need to feel confident from the very first lesson. I would like for all of my students within the first lesson to finish either of two basic projects (pajama pants or a draw string bag).
My lessons are not like videos you may find online. Meaning projects will take longer than you think they will. I will work with you to properly construct a quality finished project without too many frustrations and in a timely manner. I recommend buying lessons in 90 minute packages, since sewing always takes longer than expected.
THE BEGINNER SEWER
In these lessons we will go over the following, which can be adapted to how you want:
- Sewing safety and how to use a machine - Learn about the sewing tools you'll be using - How to read, cut out, layout, and follow a basic pattern instructions - How to pin and sew a seam, finish seams and sew hems - Learn to sew on an elastic band (to pajamas or for a tote). - Learn how to unpick your projects when a mistake is made. - Learn how to do a basic stitch and the gather stitch. - TAKE AWAY PROJECTS: - Pajamas - Sewing Tote - Basic Dress - Pillow case
THE INTERMEDIATE SEWER - Cement what you learned in the while a beginner. - Learn to hand sew hems etc. - Learn about different fabrics and when to use them. - Sew a basic zipper onto clothes or bags. - Learn about the different foots. - Learn to do other stitches -TAKE AWAY PROJECTS - Intermediate Dresses/ Clothes - Bags
Whether it is for a hobby, to decorate your house, to prepare for design school, or to make your own clothes, I can teach you from the very basic sewing skills, to more advance topics such as modifying your patterns to make clothes that fit.
りりさん Is a great teacher I'm very excited for my second lesson! She's very focused on what you want to learn specifically and also helps you understand the basics. Sends you what you've learned so you can review it whenever!

Hi, I’ve taught Japanese since 2002 and I’ve always enjoyed teaching and interacting with students. I have taught American adults and college students for over 5 years now. Teaching Japanese to American military personnel and spouses who were stationed in Japan was the most rewarding experiences I’ve had. They truly needed the language skills to live in Japan, and they really appreciated that they were able to learn survival Japanese that’s instantly useful out in town.
I grew up in Japan and came to US to go to college. Since I was a college student, I taught Japanese to middle and high school students during summer in Japan. I have a Master of Education in TESL. Yes, I used to teach English more vigorously, but I found teaching Japanese more rewarding. I teach all levels including those who are starting out and also want to improve their fluency and understand the culture and history! I’m looking forward to working with whoever is interested in my language :) Thank you!!
I started my teaching career when I was a college student. In Japan, I taught both English and Japanese to middle and high school students at a private academy. I have also taught Japanese to adults especially the spouses stationed in Japan and also at community college. I have the Master of Education in TESL; therefore, I’ve taught English more vigorously, but know what it takes to be successful at second language acquisition. I really find it rewarding to teach those who are interested in Japanese language and culture.
I like to get to know your learning styles and what motivates you. I will cater to your needs and make your own lesson plan just for you.
I love teaching and discovering my own culture through the eyes of the students. I love to meet new people and just love the people who want to learn a foreign language. It gives y
ou an opportunity to widen your view of the world!
I’ve also played the piano since I was 3 years old and have the Yamaha certification; therefore, I teach piano too. I also love to play!!
Japanese native. Living in the US for 30 years. Specializing in the beginner/intermediate.
I came here to the US in 1989 from Okayama pref. It’s west side in Japanese main island. Taught Japanese at Mitsubishi Motors Co. and privately.
I myself learned how to speak English and had hard time leaning it and still learning. I understand how hard it is and struggles to learn different languages. I would like to help you learn from my experiences
I am currently working as a Korean, ESL, and Japanese tutor. Because I am also a language learner (English and Japanese), I know why and in what area the students struggle when learning Japanese especially English and Korean speaking students. I am confident that I can help you to achieve your goal even if you speak languages other than English and Korean.
Hello. I am an in-service tutor at the college. I am currently helping students with Korean, ESL, and Japanese. I meet many students with various needs daily basis. If you let me know your concerns or struggles, I will try my best for you to achieve your goal! Let's make it happen together!
I wanted to find someone who was knowledgeable to help lead me in the right direction in my Korean studies. I've been studying Korean at home and Herena has been incredibly helpful as a tutor! I went in knowing a tiny bit of very basic Hangul. Herena worked with me and with the book I had already purchased for studies. She is knowledgeable and personable. As a native Korean speaker I trust that she knows what she is talking about. Herena is also very friendly and relatable. Super cool that she uses the topics I am interested in for the lessons and offering cultural and historical facts as well. I've learned so much with her, you can't go wrong if she's your tutor!

His teaching skills are much better than other teachers.
Because of experience."
"Oyamada Sensei is very good at finding a student's skill level and tailoring his instruction to improve the skills and challenge the limits of the student
, which has quickly spurred me on to dramatic improvements in my Japanese ability after only 3 lessons. He also makes it fun by playing to the interests of the student and keeping the sessions light and full of humor. Highly recommended if you want to work hard, have fun, and learn Japanese!"
"Very helpful! Gives more insight towards learning the Japanese language."

It's important to be able to express yourself in any language, and learning to express yourself in Japanese can help you communicate more effectively with native Japanese speakers. Here, Washington, DC language teacher Taro T. teaches you some words, phrases, and Japanese vocabulary to express your emotions...
