I specialize in Jazz Saxophone, but also am very fluent and familiar with the classical world as well. One huge plus that my saxophone students have is that I can accompany them on piano. This makes lessons in jazz improvisation much more effective. I focus on fundamental skills such as sight reading, technique, jazz and classical theory, improvisation and composition. I also make recordings for my students on request. I have worked with multiple wind ensembles and jazz bands in the past, and can help polish up ensemble music.

About Joey

Joey Earnest is a Southern California musician and educator who specializes in keyboard, saxophone, composition, and production. In addition to teaching private music lessons, he teaches several rock and jazz history courses at Mesa College. He received a BM in Jazz Studies: Saxophone Performance from UC Irvine, an MM in Composition from San Diego State University, and an MA in Education from National University. Joey also produces and composes electro-acoustic music under the pseudonym, M_NKY. His compositions and improvisations are influenced by Jazz, European Classical, Experimental Electronic Music, Drum & Bass, Reggae, Rock, R & B, Hip-Hop, Indian Classical, Native American, Appalachian Folk, Afro-Cuban, and many more genres of music. Joey can be heard performing in and around San Diego with his band, The Munks.

Joey teaches music

lessons for piano, saxophone, composition, and production. He has taught all levels and ages for over 10 years. Joey has been playing the saxophone and piano for over 20 years. In addition to working as an adjunct professor at Mesa College, Joey has coached saxophone at Westview and Mt. Carmel High School, and taught college level courses in electronic music and music production at SDSU. Joey has a very adaptable approach when he teaches. He understands that all students have very different learning styles and interests. His broad range of musical and educational training allows his students to learn many styles and genres of music while understanding fundamentals like theory and technique. Students will be empowered to hone their craft as an instrumentalist, composer, producer, artist, or all of the above.

We love joey!!! He's a great teacher because he teaches the way that is right for the student. He comes to our house twice a week to teach our 5-year-old son, who wasn't particularly interested in learning the songs from the book, scales, etc, so Joey changed it up to make it fun for him by focusing on making up songs and improvising (while still sneaking in some of the technical stuff). Our son looks forward to his lessons so much! Joey is obviously a masterful pianist and could teach at any skill level.

Joey is a gifted musician and even more gifted teacher. My 14 year old has been taking piano lessons with Joey for about eighteen months now. We lived in San Diego for a year and my son started in person with him for close to ten months. Joey's teaching style and connection with my son was so effective that we decided to continue lessons via Skype. My son is a highly gifted kid for whom lots of learning comes easily. Not so with music, but he is inspired and motivated by Joey. Joey's ability to meet the learner where they are and push them beyond their normal comfort zone is impressive. I am very, very glad that we found him. Joey's teaching style is engaging and encouraging while holding the learner accountable to practice, development, and growth. I wholeheartedly recommend him for both in person and online lessons.

Joey has been teaching piano to our now 8 and 11 yo boys for more than a year. Although my kids aren't musical per say and don't tend to practice during the week, thanks to Joey their piano skills are impressive! Without ignoring the theory, Joey was able to adapt his teaching style to their personalities and has taught them to play their favorite songs. My younger son was so excited to to learn Fall out Boy's "Centuries" he would run to the piano to practice! Both boys are clearly proud of their accomplishments and love to show them off to their friends. Thank you Joey!

You'll be playing songs in no time! With over eight years of teaching experience with students of all ages, I know how to tailor your experience to you or your child's goals and experience level. I believe that we get the most joy from playing our instrument by developing strong fundamentals so that new musical challenges are enlightening rather than frustrating.

About Julian

I began teaching in-home lessons to K-12 and adult students in 2010. Since then I have:
1) Taught thousands of fun and engaging lessons to over 150 students
2) Helped high school students attain successful college music auditions
3) Had students on saxophone AND clarinet place successfully in All-State and All-County Honors Bands and Gifted and Talented Ensembles

Whether your student is excelling and wants new musical challenges to stay engaged or you think they could enjoy music but are struggling to keep up, I have experience with that situation. I am a passionate performer myself, and I released my debut jazz album in early 2018. I truly believe that music is one of the greatest sources of joy in the world.

I played the sax through high school and then stopped playing until I retired ~ 4 years ago. I started lessons with Julian when he lived nearby and have continued with "skype" lessons since he moved out of the area. He's a great teacher: motivational, thorough knowledge of both classical and jazz, kind, good sense of humor, and a good communicator. I highly recommend him.

I highly recommend Julian as a saxophone teacher. My son started playing saxophone and taking lessons with Julian three years ago, when my son was 9 years old. Julian is patient with my son and has built a good rapport with him. Julian has always encouraged him to try his best and to not be discouraged when he makes mistakes, and that has made my son comfortable with Julian and confident enough to push himself. Also, Julian is reliable and punctual, and is good at communicating through text and email.

I have been teaching privately and in colleges/schools for over 15 years. For all levels, I will help you develop excellent technique on the saxophone and build a strong foundation in music theory. For advanced/intermediate students, I also teach jazz improvisation, if you’re interested! Please bring in the music and songs you want to work on. I believe lessons should be fun and interesting while you learn great stuff, too!

About Dan

Hi, I’m a professional tenor and soprano saxophonist. I graduated from William Paterson University with a Bachelors in Jazz Performance. I also have an MA in Jazz History and Research from Rutgers University.

I enjoy helping students to develop improved technique, sight reading, and musicality. For those students interested, I also help them to develop a very solid foundation for jazz improv and theory. I’ve taught hundreds of students over the years, privately, in clinics, and in classrooms at colleges and universities.

As a performing artist, I perform with many top jazz artists, and have performed with trombone legend J.J. Johnson, trombonist Steve Turre, drummer Akira Tana and Rufus Reid (Tana Reid), alto saxophone master James Spaulding, and others including Ed Cherry, Yoron Israel, Cindy Blackman, and Leon Thomas.

I've been receiving instruction from Dan for almost a month, and I'm very impressed with my progression. Dan is a very patient, friendly and knowledgeable teacher who cares about my progress and success as a musician. I’ve seen improvement in my embouchure, increased my sight reading speed, and my intonation. I would highly recommend him to anyone interested in improving their ability to play the saxophone.

Before I engaged Dan Faulk as a teacher, I knew of him as one of the preeminent voices on the tenor saxophone. I had seen him in performance several times and heard him on recordings. I reached out to him for lessons because I knew that he was a great player who could likely help me achieve my goal of becoming a musician able to improvise in the jazz idiom. What I did not know until my first encounter with him was how easy it would be to work with Dan. By that, I in no way mean to suggest that he is a pushover or that my lessons were not serious, rigorous or challenging. What I mean is that Dan is the rare instructor who has the ability to help you stay focused and positive while at the same time challenging you in a disciplined and nurturing way. With his guidance, I certainly became a better musician in every respect.

One of the most important things about my time with Dan is that fact that he used a pedagogical framework that clearly conveyed for me at the outset the work necessary for me to become an effective improvising musician. Dan is extremely knowledgeable about the inner workings and alternative underlying theories of jazz improvisation because he has played with and studied with many of the luminaries of jazz, and he knows how to structure and present this information. With his vast knowledge and desire to facilitate my musical growth, Dan kept me on task during our twice a month sessions and was always available in between sessions for any questions I might have had.

In short, I am very happy that I reached to Dan for lessons as he is a wonderful and enthusiastic teacher.

Dan Foulk is not only a great sax player, but also an amazing teacher. He is honest in his teaching style and observes each of students carefully. He listens deeply to them and catches what students are missing that will allow them to grow as a better musician and performer. Dan shows his students what they need to improve their technique and proficiency but also gives them the tools to develop an ear that is able to hear their own mistakes. This is one of the most important skills to have as a jazz musician. Personally, I really enjoyed studying with him and highly recommend a lesson with him whether you’re a beginner, intermediate, or even a professional musician.

I am a multi-instrumentalist, with 14 years of experience playing saxophone, 8 years of collegiate study in saxophone performance with modular studies in Jazz, Music Theory, Composition, and Pedagogy.

With a broad range of skills spread across a wide gamut of instruments, I have ample experience in adapting and learning concepts in a cross-disciplinary manner and have a great facility for fostering growth and diagnosing learning discrepancies.

Lessons are comprehensive; covering not just saxophone technique, but valuable skills and concepts within the idiom that provide students with a well-rounded education and understanding of their musicianship.

Most importantly, I am performing professionally on a weekly basis and putting my own skills and education to work constantly.

About Machado

I am a professional multi-instrumentalist, producer, composer, audio engineer, and educator based out of Portland, OR.

I have 8 years of collegiate experience in performance, composition, theory, and pedagogy from Washington State University, University of Puget Sound, and Whitman College.

I play saxophone, drums, piano, and bass for groups such as Thankusomuch, Integer, Mordecai, Othership Connection, and SARCA.

I have produced, mixed, and mastered for projects by artists like Rob Araujo, Eyelovebrandon, @tlas, and 2uo.

My compositions have been featured in Washington State University's College of Arts and Sciences Undergraduate Research journal in accordance with grant research on contemporary composition methods.

I am a signed artist at Marmoset Music Licensing in Portland, and have independently released six albums that were al

l mixed, mastered, and produced by me.

I love education, and really enjoy passing the skills I've gained along to enthusiastic students. Passion is a very important factor of musicianship to me; don't do it if you don't love it.

My teaching philosophy is to serve as a resource to students, or even, to act as a sounding board for them and their ideas. I evaluate the student's strengths and weaknesses over a few diagnostic lessons, then I determine what the student wants from lessons. The curriculum I build is based entirely on what I feel will help the student thrive most, but while also remaining wary of supporting their desires.

I feel like teaching musical concepts also makes me stronger at them, so I strive to keep myself honest while providing a clear pathway to steady progress with my students.

Nobody becomes a superstar overnight; I'm here to continue to push until my students can achieve new heights.

I've been playing the saxophone for over 15 years, and I love its color, flexibility, and unparalleled expressive range. I want to make sure all my students have as well-rounded an education they can, from basic fundamentals, to classical and jazz tone, to improvisation, to all sorts of wild extended techniques. The sky's the limit with the saxophone!

About Aidan

I am a composer, educator, and saxophonist looking to help students of all ages and backgrounds understand music as deeply as possible. I firmly believe that ear training and practical theory that helps students gain an understanding of a wide variety of music will help them appreciate and love music more deeply--it's like listening in full color!

I believe that all music has the potential to be great, and I want to help aspiring musicians and composers learn to be the best artists they can be. I am an experienced teacher and composer who teaches music theory and composition at The Community Music Center of Boston and holds a master's degree from Boston University, where I studied with esteemed composer Joshua Fineberg. I am also an experienced saxophonist who studied under Idit Shner at the University of Oregon.

I relish the opportunit

y to teach music to students of all skill levels with a focus on any style a student wishes, but don't think that means you'r education will be limited! I believe eclecticism is one of the finest virtues a musician can have, and there's something valuable every genre has to teach us.

Learning to play your instrument at the highest level will make it easier for anyone to play any kind of music they may like. Don't waste time learning to play tunes on sax, but spend time learning to play sax on any tunes. Seems like a smarter way to go to me. I'm all about learning to play as fast and efficiently as possible. However practice and playing time is a must.

Takes the same amount of time to learn to play sax now as it did 175 years ago!

About Kevin

35 yrs of teaching sax and clarinet students
Many of my students have participated in Honor Band and All State Band events year after year. I am very comfortable with total beginners, advancing players, and aspiring pros. I currently have students from 9 to 80+
I tailor student lessons to the needs and wants of the student, however certain things cannot be skipped. Like math, music is a sequentially learned skill. Master the basics...and you can play whatever you practice for.
I am Ok working with serious or casual players, and am relentless in making sure that you grasp the concepts necessary to be a good player.

I have been playing music in one way or another for over the past 20 years. Saxophone has been my main instrument for the majority of this time. I began playing in middle school and continued playing throughout high school and college. I have marched with the Million Dollar Band and played in several jazz bands.
With my experience, I can help teach you to read music as well as teach beginner saxophone technique. If you're ready to learn, let's get to it!

About Jessica

I'm a music lover and if you're looking for a saxophone teacher then I'm sure you are, too! I have enjoyed playing this instrument and I would love to help you get introduced to it!

Want to learn how to play the saxophone? I’ll teach you the basics so that you can learn to play whatever you want, whenever you want. Just tell me what kind of music you like and I’ll help teach you how to play it. Let me show you how fun the saxophone really is. I can’t wait to see you in my class!

About Anthony

Hey, my name is Anthony and I’m really excited to meet you! I’ve been playing the saxophone for almost 10 years and don’t plan on stopping anytime soon. While I’m currently in college studying finance, I still very much enjoy playing music on the side. Throughout the years, I have experimented with the alto, tenor, and baritone sax but have the most experience on alto. I’ve also tutored kids in the past, but it wasn’t until recently that I considered making the instrument I’ve played for the majority of my life, a job.
I’m a very patient person, and want to help anyone who’s just starting out on saxophone, get better—no matter how long it takes. Because, at the end of the day, I just want my students to enjoy playing this instrument as much as I do.
I really look forward to teaching you how to play the best instrument

on earth!

Jack
""Now that I'm studying with Mike, the efficiency of my practice time is way, way up."

Mike is the first coach who emphasizes "practice the hard parts".
So much so that any time a note comes out either not in rhythm, not in pitch, or not a great sound, I have the confidence to stop and repeat the hard part until it's no longer hard. Even when learning to improvise, if the notes I pick on the sax don't match the ones I first heard in my head, I have the confidence to stop and really find those notes that my mind imagined. Eventually I'll be able to hit the ones I intend the first time. He also advocates to always know the purpose of any practicing you're doing---there's no more aimless noodling. Even when I'm jamming, there's a specific goal in mind.

The second thing I really get from Mike is that he expects me to know what notes I'm playing and what role they fill in the key. Formerly my method of improvising was to hunt and peck, occasionally hitting notes outside the key and finding a way to "work them back in". But now, if I'm riffing on the note F in the key of B-flat, Mike wants me to know that that's the 5 of the key. And to also know where the 3 and 7 are---like a home base where you know it's safe to play."
