Private Cello Teacher

I can help beginning students on cello learn the basics.

About Thomas

Thomas J. W. is an active music teacher, composer, adjudicator, and clinician in the greater Philadelphia area. He has over fifteen years experience as a concert band director, marching band director, jazz improvisation instructor, choral director, private instructor, and marching drill writer. His directing career has included small rural band programs, small metro programs, large high-achieving suburban programs, and non-profit youth bands. In addition to his band compositions, he also has over forty unpublished vocal arrangements to his credit, most written for use with collegiate men's a cappella groups. Thomas taught over 600 online and local private music lessons in 2016.

Thomas has a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education from The Pennsylvania State University. He holds a teaching certificate in the states of Pennsylvania

and New Jersey and has taught at the secondary level in both states. In addition to both instrumental and choral ensembles at Penn State, Thomas was a student leader in the Penn State Blue Band and a member of the brass section of the Cadets of Bergen County Drum and Bugle Corps in 1993 and 1994. He served as an Associate Director of the Warren Junior Military Band of Youngstown, Ohio from 1995 to 2005. He also served as a visual staff member for the renowned North Penn Marching Knights of Lansdale, PA for one season in 2004.

He is a current adjudicator with Drum Corps International and Cavalcade of Bands. He is a member of MENC, PMEA, NJMEA, ASCAP, CASA, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and the National Band Association. He appeared in the Marquis Who's Who Among American Educators in 2004 and 2005, an honor rarely bestowed upon teachers, as students who appear in the Who's Who Among American High School Students must nominate them. He currently is a music teacher at the Center for Performing and Fine Arts of the PA Leadership Charter School in West Chester, PA and resides in Downingtown, PA with his wife and two sons.

Thomas will happily work with students on the autism spectrum or students with ADD.

*** Lesson Details ***
My lessons are tailored to the needs and interests of each student. If a student is involved in school music ensembles, we will work with their lesson books from school in addition to material outside of the books, including SmartMusic, Noteflight, and teacher-created materials. We will focus on building proper tone production and individual technique - something that often is difficult to learn in a large ensemble setting.

I am capable of starting a beginner student on any band instrument including percussion, any classical string instrument (violin, viola, cello, string bass), and piano. I can begin a student on drum set and work with them through their first method book, but I would then recommend they find a specialized drum set teacher after a period of six to twelve months.

For advanced students, I work from selected conservatory etude books on developing advanced skills and can work with students on audition pieces for honors bands/orchestras or college auditions.

My lessons are a half-hour once a week, with the option of working for 45 minutes or 60 minutes.

*** Specialties ***
music, band, orchestra, flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, saxophone, trumpet, french horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba, violin, viola, cello, string bass, piano, Percussion
classical, jazz improvisation

Thomas is honestly an amazing musician and teacher. He was really patient with me. Despite having to deal with major timezone differences (as I live in Myanmar), he took the time to figure it out. Also, he helped me figure out the stuff it took me months to figure out. He also really knows what he's doing. I learned so much in that hour of practice. 10/10 would recommend him.

I am a freelance cellist in NYC which means I get to play music of all styles and genres. I love getting to play and teach all different kinds of music and do not expect my students to learn only one style. The world of music is a vast one and I enjoy getting to explore as much of it as I can

About Eric

Hello! My name is Eric and I've been playing Cello for 19 years. I absolutely love music in all of it's forms. I've had a very diverse career and played music from all over the world and getting to explore the world of music is one of the things I cherish the most. I love getting to pass along my appreciation and love for music to my students.

I have worked in inner City schools in NYC teaching cello classes as well as giving private lessons. As a teaching artist I enjoy getting to travel to upstate NY to work with schools in the Adirondack region. I also have experience teaching adult students of all skill levels.
I am comfortable and experienced teaching people of all ages and experience levels.
*** Travel Equipment ***
I don't provide any equipment unless the student is without a stand in which case I'll bring one, the only thi

ng I would require is a chair but that has never been an issue before.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in Classical music in all genres. I've played in multiple orchestras and string quartets as well as playing solo cello for orchestras and recitals. I am also very experienced in world music, pop, rock, etc.

Private Cello Teacher

I teach cello from the Suzuki method, with an emphasis on technique and intonation.

About Andy

I am Andy. I am a graduate of the California Institute of the Arts with a BFA degree in Composition/Violin Performance. I will be attending school again in the Fall to get my teaching certificate to teach in the public school system. My violin playing has been featured on Glee, with Kevin Olusola (Pentatonix), and guitar featured on shows like Rachel Ray and Dr. Phil. My main passions are songwriting, and collaborating with other great musicians all over the country.

I have been a private music teacher for the past 8 years and it has been an extremely rewarding journey. My students love their lessons with me, and parents love that I am patient and more open-minded than most music teachers out there. Students say I am friendly and funny, and fun to learn with. My teaching style on the violin is centered around the Suzuki method, but I l

eave a lot of flexibility to cater lessons around your interests. If you ask to play a certain song, I will find a way to help you play it. Every goal is achievable with practice, dedication, and fun!

Andy has been teaching my son piano for the last two years. My son always looks forward to going to piano with Andy and he has made so much progress. Andy is very communicative about my son's progress and ideas he has for new goals. Andy is very good at helping my son keep his enthusiasm for piano. He is also sensitive about where my son is at in terms of what he needs to strengthen or if any adjustments need to be made. I highly recommend Andy, not only as a music teacher, but as a person with whom you would want yourself or children to spend time with each week.

My goal as a teacher is to help you reach your musical goals! My lessons consist of scales, duets, and solo repertoire. Each lesson is different depending on the student I am working with, but the core of my teach is based around these 3 areas.

About Victor

My name is Victor and I have been actively teaching cello for the past 7 years. In Ames, IA I had a studio of 8 students, all ranging from different age groups and abilities. I also have experience teaching online lessons, which require a slightly different approach than in person lessons. I recently moved to Minneapolis, MN after pursuing my Masters Degree in cello performance at The Boston Conservatory and running a successful teaching studio of 20-25 students. My goal as a teacher is to help you achieve your musical goals. I try my absolute hardest to create a warm and positive environment for all of my students. I understand that every student is different and I make sure to create individual lesson plans for each of my students. Not only will you grow as a musician and as a cellist, but I believe that learning an instrument gives us

skills that can be beneficial in every aspect of our daily lives. Whether you are new to the cello, picking it back up after some time off, or at a more advanced level, I hope to hear from you! If you have any questions at all, please send me an email. I look forward to hearing from you!

BIO:

As a 40 year old beginner I was a little nervous about the whole online experience as well as starting a new instrument. Victor makes the online teaching experience seamless. Victor is calm, thoughtful and patient. He always finds a way to explain something in a way that relates to me specifically. To do this someone must be able to listen as well as teach. This is quality I have not found in all of my teachers/instructors/coaches throught the years. Victor is also easily the most flexible of any teacher I have had. He always finds a way to accommodate my schedule and works around any issues that arise. I have really enjoyed my learning experience thus far and look forward to each lesson. I would not hesitate to recommend Victor to anyone looking to learn the cello.

I was a pianist and oboist in my early life, and now in my 40s decided that I'd love to learn to play the cello. Victor is a really wonderful teacher. He's very patient, very calm, and very responsive. Whenever I would message him, he'd respond within a few hours, and often he'd respond right away. He was very flexible when schedules changed. Whenever I would run into problems or issues with a new technique, he would find resources, such as videos, to help describe it more fully. I've had many music teachers over the years and Victor is absolutely one of the best.

Music is great for self expression a great Escape or an easy pass-time. It's nothing that should be stressful, but the opposite and that is what my lessons aim to do. As a passionate cello player, I want my students to have fun but also really understand their instrument and the music they are playing! Students will learn their scales through the circle of fifths, shifting positions, vibrato techniques, music theory, and performing with an accompanist. They are expected to have fun but to work hard - it’s totally worth it!

About Melissa

I have been playing piano for 23 years and cello for 16 years. I love sharing music with others and seeing them grow to love music as well. I am currently a pianist for the KC Ballet’s ROAD program. I have a Bachelors of Music from Lindenwood University. I have been a piano accompanist for 7 years. I taught 5th grade Orchestra Club in the Fort Zumwalt School District and was a substitute teacher for Orchestra classes for 3 years. I have been teaching private lessons for 10 years.

Based on playing ability, I try to tailor a student's goals to their time available to practice and motivation. Just like with any craft, playing an instrument is a discipline that needs attention, and I want the best outcome the student feels that they can produce. We will have fun discovering the joys of learning music!

About Keats

Hello! I am currently a college student in Lakeland, Florida at Southeastern University. I am in the process of working on my undergraduate degree in music performance with a concentration on cello. I primarily began my studies in piano before taking cello lessons a few years later. I am a teacher that usually teaches classical, but can also teach other things upon request.

I look forward to working with you!

"I am brand new to the cello. My first concerns were the ergonomics... how best to hold the cello, my bow, my string hand, posture etc. Victor gave very cl
ear information on all of these and then was able to give exercises to help these. When we moved to the playing, it was the same clear progressive instruction that was a balance of rational progression and inspiration."

"Currently taking cello lessons with Johnny and his teaching style is great, learning a lot with him + becoming inspired/getting excited about progress. He
's able to pick apart stuff at a very detailed level and help me work through it. Aside from all the technique aspects of cello playing he's good at explaining via online lesson with the details and what not, his motivational talks are helpful if you're having a session where for whatever reason you can't focus and you're kind of flying off the rails.....he'll also remind you that this is music and to do stuff like visualize things like colors or imagine things or recall memories, think of emotions, etc while you are playing."

"Excellent, excellent teacher

I've been taking cello lessons from Bijan for about 2 years now, and his instruction has caused me take a greater appreciati
on for music on the whole. Cello is my first instrument and I was worried that, as an adult player just starting out, I'd have to hunt around for an effective teacher. I was very, very lucky in getting Bijan as my teacher. His credentials are unmatched and his talent across multiple musical styles is amazing. Any question you have, from instrument choice to deep music theory, he has an answer for. He has also been incredibly patient with me, even when I seemed frustrated and ready to give up. I probably would have if it had not been for his encouragement and help. Bijan would absolutely be my first choice for anyone in the San Diego area wanting to learn music."

Is Cello Hard to Learn? Read THIS Before Taking Lessons

By Jessica Dais

Many beginning musicians wonder, “Is cello hard to learn?” The process of learning the cello is not difficult, but it’s important to keep in mind that the cello is not an instrument of instant gratification. It does require focused, daily practice time and a good teacher to guide you along the way. How far you progress with cello is a direct result of the amount of quality time you put into practicing the instrument. Even someone who puts in just 30 minutes a day will notice a signi …
