My hope is that all students will learn at their comfortable pace in ways specific to their learning style. In more than 25 years teaching experience, I've learned that students will excel in and find enjoyment within an environment fostering self-confidence and self-expression. Of particular interest to me is bridging student interests, intra-curricular, and other collaborative repertoire assignments with lessons. I will have accomplished my life's passion when practice rooms, recording studios, audiences and stages have past and present students who continue to love music and support the performing arts.

I have a Master's Degree in Vocal Pedagogy from Peabody Conservatory at The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD. I began teaching during my final year of undergraduate School at Birmingham-Southern College in Birmingham, AL. I began taking piano lessons at the age of five and played int he sch

Learn the basics of rhythm and tonality, as well as how they apply to your instrument. Then use those tools to learn the music you're interested in.

Intermediate
Learn about common variations of the tonalities you already know and start to venture into more complex rhythm ideas like polyrhythms. Also start to build the chops to learn parts more accurately when learning songs.

Talented teachers are rare. Like a great coach i sports... the coach doesn’t need to be the top athlete in his field to know how to teach each team member to hone their best abilities, he just has to know and see how to teach you how to get there. Being an outstanding teacher is a great talent all in itself... and that is Jesse. He has that quality and ability to lead, focus and take you where you want to go.

Jesse has given directions on how to successfully become a better musician. His approach and explanation on musical theories was much more understandable than what I was previously reading. Overall, I found the lessons to be very usefull.

Along with the other subjects I teach that include voice and speech, I wanted to post another that spoke directly to those that suffer from a stutter. I too had a horrible stutter when I was much younger and through much therapy, I learned to completely eliminate it from my speech pattern. I believe I can do the same for you.

About Randy

I have always been an actor first, it is the craft and discipline in which I hold my advanced degrees; it is my first and eternal love. There really isn't much more one could add to such a claim. Simultaneously I have believed a teacher is born, not bred; and I was born to be in theatre, and now, wi

First off. Just want to say that we had to cancel our first session. However, I really like this guy because he had kept it real and set it straight on the reason why the session was cancel. He was very sick that day and he didn't want to be involved with the session not being at 100%. Respect! I wouldn't have wanted him not being at his best either. Takes alot of guts for a person to confess that. I really appreciated the honesty because that explains how passionate Randy is about the craft.
Second of all, when we did our first session, I had to deal with a rough technical patch of trying g to join in for the session. He had no problem helping me with this technical glitch rather than allowing TakeLessons (who I was unable to reach because of matainace issues), to handle it. He helped 5he TakeLessons team. A plus Randy! Though I had to finally use another device to finally join the session, Randy was still willing to have patience and help me with the tech problem.
Lastly, Randy brought a warm feeling to the session and yet sincere. He made me feel welcomed, which opened me up more during this session. This helped because I am uncomfortable with improv but want to get better. He understood this and gave a real honest approach. Also, he informed me that we were going to get a gist of my performance level and work from there. Furthermore, we were going to ease our way into improvement. This gave me alot more balance than other improv classes. He is even willing to give me a little homework that I can practice in prep for next week.
Randy is very encouraging and I enjoyed our first session. I'm exited for next week!

I have been playing mandolin for about five years now. What started as a Led Zeppelin obsession has since moved towards a Chris Thile obsession...including studies following his learning methods.

About Joe

I absolutely love teaching music! After over 20 years of teaching, performing, writing, and recording in all styles/genres, it continues to be a great adventure. It is a joy to pass this on to others...especially seeing my students that never touched the instrument going on to be very proficient p

I can play any number of styles from blues and country to hard rock and heavy metal I've been playing guitar for about 15 years now. I know music theory very well and I'm great with making the theory part fun to learn while teaching to play a style that the student prefers. I'm an easy going guy and really patient. I make the promise to every student that I will give them every bit of effort and support I can to propel them in their music career. I'm one of those people who gets along with everybody and I like to make my lessons fun for each student.

About Garrett

I've been playing guitar for about 15 years now and I've played in just about every type of band. After playing in a metal band for about 5 years I switched over to a classic rock group for a couple years. In both of those groups I was lead guitar/lead vocals. Now for the last few years I've been

I tried learning guitar a number of years ago. Garrett was great getting me started back into guitar. He quickly got me going with some simple chords and techniques. He has a strong understanding of guitar and makes it easy to understand. + he can play anything!
Derrick
What can I say about Garrett. I have never met a better guitarist in my 20 years of playing. Taking lessons with him was one of the best decisions I ever made. I would pay him double. No matter the guitar style, Garrett seems to have played it for years and has real insight on any of the different styles from Blues, to Country, to Rock, to Classic Rock, to Metal. He helped me not just learn riffs or songs but scales and has bug in teaching me more advanced music theory as well. He truly is the perfect mix of good person and amazing guitarist. Don’t miss the chance to learn from one of the best no matter your skill level!

I have been taking trumpet lessons from Troy for about 16 months and I highly recommend him as an excellent , very patient and encouraging teacher.
I am 80 years old and before lessons with Troy had not touched my horn since high school. He started with the basics and with his guidance my skills improved nearly to the level when I played in the high school orchestra and concert band.

In addition to being a very good teacher, Troy is also an excellent musician and his passion for music and sharing is highly inspiring.
Being an excellent teacher and musician is just part of Troy. He tops it off with a big personality and a good guy to be around.
If you are 8 or 80 and are looking for a teacher with outstanding credentials who is very patient and makes learning fun be sure to ask for Troy as your teacher.

"Athan is a fantastic teacher and communicator. To shake things up a bit this summer, I arranged an online poker lesson with Athan for my son. I saw later that Athan's resume is super impressive -- Yale, Cornell, professional poker player, CEO multiple times over. So impressive, actually, that leading up to the lesson I was wondering whether he and my son would even be able to communicate with each other, and whether I was getting my son into something that was way over his head. I sat next to my son the whole time, and saw the whole lesson. Athan came in and knocked the lesson out of the park. He knew his "audience," was totally prepared, and said all the right things at the right times to keep everything clear, interesting and effective. Just as one example, at the beginning Athan asked my son a couple questions about his other interests (e.g. what do you do? do you play sports? like math?) and when Carter told him the answers, Athan memorized them. Then throughout the lesson, Athan kept analogizing the principles he was teaching to those experiences Carter had told him about. Amazing! I was blown away. Athan's not only an apparent master of his poker craft, but he's got real talent when it comes to communication more broadly. It's no wonder he's traveled so far."

"The great experience started with the first chat, well before the first lesson. I knew this was going to be very good, because he asked several pertinent questions, which let him know my general level. That way, he could already have a plan when we first met. Improvement is already evident after the first lesson. I plan on many more sessions with JP."

Chess Openings & How To Start Your Game Strong

As a game, chess is traditionally divided into three phases: the opening, the middlegame, and the endgame. While all three are important, today I’m going to help you start out strong in the opening. When I first learned how to play chess, I played openings that really did not help me improve and left me with an awkward start to the game more often than not. Eventually, I adopted some of the openings that I will show you in this post and my rating skyrocketed. Opening Principles The first …
