I teach chess in school settings and private lessons. The skill of students ranges from beginner to intermediate. Some of my students have ratings up to 1200. I can teach you at your home, at my home, or a public place like a library or coffee shop. A typical lesson will be an hour and include a quick chess puzzle, a substantive and level-appropriate lesson, and a challenge game with analysis. All lessons are very dependent on student level, and may include only some of those components.

About Josh
Hi!

I have been working with students for several years in formal and informal settings. I have a degree in psychology, with a minor in statistics. I recently began coaching chess at several local DC area schools, and tutoring private students. I love to help people learn a new subject, and I am especially passionate about engendering the joy of learning in young people.

Thanks!

I've been playing chess for about 8 years. Aside from being a strong player, I also have experience tutoring players of all ages and skill levels. This includes my time spent instructing a very competitive and successful high school chess team as well as serving as a personal tutor for different families in their homes. Of the hours I have formally tutored, I have amassed a 5 star rating on a comparable website.

Coach Siddharth has been a colleague of mine and a chess coach in great standing at Silver Knights Enrichment for the past few years; during this time I have had the privileged of co-coaching groups of young chess enthusiasts with him on numerous occasions and have been continually appreciative of Siddharth's ability to effectively impart his vast knowledge of chess concepts and principles to young students. In addition to his enthusiasm for teaching, he also has a patient demeanor and a wonderful way with kids. Recently I was pleased to learn that one of Siddharth's private students participated in his first scholastic chess tournament and won First Place in his division! Bravo coach!

I started working with John almost a year ago. I was completely new to chess and was interested in learning to play. John has done a great job teaching me the basics (and now some more advanced material) and has also gotten me really excited about the game. Lessons are a nice mix of tactics, broader strategy, and some chess history. It has been really wonderful taking lessons with John. Beyond providing great lessons, he is a really fun and enthusiastic person. It's hard not to be excited about chess when working with him. He is also a dedicated teacher and regularly follows up by email in between lessons, sending homework and lots of resources for outside work.

I have had the pleasure of being one of John's chess students for almost a year and half now, and I can confidently say I have improved leaps and bounds from where I started. While John always has an interactive and challenging lesson planned, I appreciate that the lesson is fluid and adaptable to my particular needs/interests that week, whether it be because I have questions about a specific tactical exercise or master game we are reviewing, or because I have experienced a particularly memorable success or failure in my chess-play that I would like to review. The lessons logically and effectively build upon themselves so that your basic skills are solidified and bolster you as you move on to more complex theories and exercises. As an adult, with a hectic job, I am immensely appreciative of John's flexibility when it comes to arranging lessons and his ability keep me challenged and developing into a more formidable chess player.

John is a great guy and an excellent instructor, and I would encourage anyone with even a passing interest in Chess (no matter the skill level) to give him a try.

Strong analytical skills.
I've been playing chess for 20 years
I've reached a 2020 elo on lichess
https://lichess.org/@/mog926
I estimate my elo rating in otb (over the board) to be somewhere between 2100-2300 and close to master level or even Grandmaster level for slower games.
I know a lot of cool ways to improve at chess and how to teach to get better at analysis and improving your chess/understanding/reviewing your games.
I would love to work with you and help boost your elo by hundreds of points (especially those under 1800 elo) or beginners/intermediate players.
I'm willing to teach all levels.

About Stephen
Currently looking for new students.
I teach piano, japanese, chess, go(weiqi/baduk), and meditation/self-improvement.
I am very proficient in all of the above subjects and have helped dozens of students reach their long-term goals over the years. I am also very patient and have taught children piano lessons for more than 10 years. As a learner I know how overwhelming new subject-matter could be and I tend to understand the pace that the student needs/wants to go at.
I feel a huge sense of accomplishment when I see my students improving. I also am constantly improving myself as a teacher so the lessons will only get better and the material should be easier to understand with time.
Let's master anything you want to work on, and have a lot of fun too :)
Thanks for reading!
