Instilling and nurturing a love of music and developing musicianship are why I’m a voice teacher. I earned my Master of Music Education degree in 2012 from Boston University, which has furthered my love of teaching and given me even more resources to draw from.

With all my students, I emphasize good technique. No matter what genre of music or age of student, singing in a healthful and fun way includes great posture, breath management, and producing a free and easy sound. I believe that each student has their own unique way of learning, so I tailor my lessons to fit. Students are both encouraged to sing music they're familiar with and to try something new. I worked with Michelle for a little over 2 years. As an adult student, I was super nervous about singing in front of anyone - it took me this long to just sign up for lessons! She was patient with me and gave me lots of tools for dealing with my nerves and stage fright. Michelle helped me to choose songs that I not only wanted to sing but that matched my voice and range. I was hesitant about performing in a recital but Michelle pointed out that it was like training for a marathon - doing all the work but not performing just seemed silly. It wasn't perfect but it was definitely something I'm proud to have crossed off my bucket list.

I been a student of voice since age 12. I come from a classical background, and while I've expanded my knowledge over the past five to six years, through study, the art of singing contemporary songs, my heart belongs to the classical style.
I have a solid background and believe that, like piano, singing needs a foundation to build upon. I would include vocal technique, ear training and a balance of music theory along with beginning note reading. My goal is for each student to learn, as well as enjoy the art of singing and hopefully assist them in their goals.

As a young child, I knew I loved music. I was fortunate to have my parents who supported and encouraged me with a variety of music lessons. It is my personal joy and a privilege to pass my love of music to the next generation of musicians.

Taking private lessons is a unique environment as it fosters a customized approach to learning. Both the instructor and the student work together to create a better understanding of the instrument and achieve a higher level of appreciation. .

I would love to share my passion and joy of music with anyone who wants to discover their own journey into the musical world.

I have worked with student's from the age seven through adulthood. I enjoy working with any age group. As a teacher, I am always looking for new ideas to aid in a student's musical journey.

I teach to the student's "lea
rning style." I use whatever resources are available to reinforce musical concepts. I am patient, and laid back. I want my students to feel comfortable, and know that they can be themselves when they are working with me. Most of all what a student can expect is a teacher who is interested in them, their progress, and making the our time together as enjoyable as possible. I believe that I help students see the joy music brings to their lives.

I have always felt that one of my greatest strengthens is my ability to interact with children and adults, and I hope that I can continue to share my love of music in the coming years.

Experience

During high school I participated in A Cappella Choir, and joined a global performing group, called "Up With People" that traveled locally and statewide. I was active in high school music productions and I studied privately voice and piano.

Since then, I have continued to sing with community based choral groups throughout the Washington, DC region. I have also assisted as an piano accompanist for a small local church.

Education

I graduated from George Mason University, with a Bachelors degree in Liberal Arts. While attending the University, I sang with the university choir and studied classical piano under the tutelage of Jacequeline Schmitt. It was because of her that I developed an interest in piano technique.

During and after college I studied with a private voice instructor from Catholic University, where I learned classical voice.
I am currently working with a Takelessons teacher to maintain my skill.

I am a certified to teach the Music Color method, which I achieved by taking an online course written by Andrew Ingkavet. I also received training and certification as a Music for Young Children, a program designed for early keyboard beginners.

I have continued to broaden my personal education by taking online courses, such as reharmonization of chords. I have also attended workshops, sponsored by the Piedmont music club, on how to incorporate improvisation into my lesson plans.

Lesson Details

I use a variety of methods for teaching piano. I do not restrain my approach to one method, but draw on resources from other methods and approaches.

I include music theory, ear training and piano technique into the lesson. While I am a classically trained pianist, I do not stick to that style of music. I believe that exposing the student to all types or styles of music broadens their education.

I use the computer and any apps that are available to further my students skills on the keyboard.

Within six months I would hope that the student would feel more comfortable at the piano. I would expect him to learn posture at the piano, including hand position. I would expect that his knowledge of the right and left hand notes would become more proficient, and that he would understand what the staff is. I would expect that he understands keyboard geography, distance between notes, the concept of high/low, dynamics, and patterns (both directional and melodic). I would add two-handed playing, at a very basic level. This, of course, would depend upon the student's pace and how much effort is put into the learning of the instrument.

My goal is to create a fun and lively learning environments, that with patience, will result in a life long love of music and the personal benefits it imparts.

NOTE: I prefer to teach students ages 11 & up.  I will accommodate younger students, but as vocal development is a direct reflection of physical development (the instrument is the body), we will be unable to delve deeply into technique.  Instead, the curriculum for younger students will include musicianship and piano skills; they will be more of music lessons that incorporate singing rather than "vocal" lessons.  My current studio consists of all sorts of singers including classical, musical theater, R&B, and pop.  In classical voice lessons, we will be learning songs not only in English, but also Italian, German, and French. Classical voice lessons may not be for everyone, however, and we will learn repertoire that suits the interests of each student.

I emphasize a basic knowledge of music theory, because it
's important for a singer to not only know how to sing, but to also understand the music he or she is singing. I will incorporate music theory into the lessons, starting with basics such as learning how to read notes.

I believe in making sure the singer is comfortable and confident.  The environment you will be learning in is open and non-threatening because a singer needs a place to explore his or her voice.  I encourage my students to make mistakes and to keep the lines of communication as open as possible.  Singers are perfectionists, and we're constantly telling ourselves what we do wrong- we don't need someone else enforcing that negativity.

I concentrate on a classical vocal technique, with proper posture, efficient breathing, lack of facial and body tension, and healthy vocal production. I believe that it is important to have a strong foundation of healthy technique no matter what style of singing. My teaching style and lesson focus will be different for each individual person, and I'm very flexible in adapting to each singer's needs and personality.

I am a very understanding teacher, and very patient, but I will push you to work to your potential! What you put into these lessons and your practicing is what you will get out of it. I am not strict, but I do expect dedication, passion, and respect. I am a very enthusiastic and energetic teacher, and lessons with me will be fun, productive, and encouraging.

I have been working with Belinda for a little over 2 years. Every lesson, she challenges me to be better than before. What I love most about her style, is she customizes her style of teaching for the student. I am a very imagery oriented person, and she always helps me to visualize things in ways that makes sense to me. Chelsea made her operatic debut in 2005 in Italy with Operafestival di Roma in their main stage production of Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro. While in Rome, Chelsea also was featured in Pergolesi's Stabat Mater. She has also been involved in other concert and oratorio works such as Villa-Lobos's Bachianas Brasileiras No.5, Rutter's Requiem, and Mozart's Requiem.

Along with her classical training she has performed in many musicals such as The King and Guys and Dolls, Oklahoma, and œThe Boyfriend. Chelsea is an honored NATS (National Association for the Teachers of Singing) competitor, Peabody Scholarship recipient, and Bland Music Scholarship recipient. Recently, Chelsea B. worked with the Richmond Philharmonic Orchestra on their spring and summer concert series. When she's not singing, you may find Chelsea enjoying a run through the neighborhood, or enjoying some time with her cat CJ.

I have had the pleasure of working with Chelsea for the last six years at a summer music camp that is sponsored by my church in Peachtree City Georgia. Chelsea is one of our Artists-in-Residence and leads vocal workshops, coaches vocalists, performs with the praise team, and also performs solo material in her presentations. This past year she served as worship leader where she directed over 100 children (ages 5-11), teen and adult volunteers in vocal worship. Her enthusiasm for music is infectious and she brings a fresh approach to the music that is presented at each encounter. She is able to establish a rapport with students of all ages making them comfortable and engaged in the music.
During our week-long camp, Chelsea and other professional musicians present a beautiful concert for the public where classical works are performed. Chelsea treats the audience to sacred and spiritual works and has developed a devoted following of patrons who return annually to hear her perform.

Chelsea has been teaching my 14 year old grandson now for over 2 years. She is actually "gets him" where many teachers don't and she manages to bring the absolutely best out in him. She clearly loves her work and it shows so much so that after many years of playing the piano, more off than on recently, I decided to take lessons with her too. I greatly enjoyed working with Sammy. Apart from being a nice, welcoming person, he had great expertise. My vocal and breathing control greatly improved throughout our lessons. I noticed a better sound and range coming from my voice. I would have hoped to continue training with him, but I had to move away for another job.

Christine is a professional vocal coach and piano instructor with an exceptional reputation. She is the owner of The Exquisite Voice, Inc. and resides in The Historic Parkfairfax community of Alexandria.

She has over eight years of teaching experience and has taught hundreds of students and given thousands of lessons, (including the full spectrum of learning needs) during this time (both vocal and piano throughout the DMV area). Christine is a master of vocal technique and focuses on properly diagnosing and addressing vocal
issues as well as integrating the body to fully support the voice.

She addresses vocal issues in a very practical and logical order by first identifying the primary source of the vocal issues and starting to work from there.

This is a simple, but crucial difference that is apparent in her approach. The very nature of secondary issues are that they are simply the extensions of the primary issues and therefore primary issues should really become the focus and starting point of the technical work.

It is from Christine’s experience and observation that she has concluded that secondary issues will always be dysfunctional (regardless of time and effort put into correcting them) as long as the primary issues have not been resolved. Oftentimes secondary issues will significantly self-correct on their own or can be approached reasonably once the primary source has been corrected.

This can only happen if the teacher knows this and is aware on how to approach the correct order in which to work and to address issues.

Making sense of primary versus secondary issues is absolutely fundamental to legitimately correcting problems successfully. Unfortunately it is often that the student is ultimately left to the enormous task of discovering this on their own, if ever and if they are lucky after years of study because the teacher is often focused on surface level issues, which are always easy to hear.

This is because most professionals are not versed in hearing such nuanced differences, nor capable to offer to work in such a refined manner.

The voice requires an execution of many things that must function together properly in order for it to work. Considering this makes it is easy to understand why the voice is viewed as the most complicated instrument to diagnose and teach. Therefore, it is absolutely important to invest in teachers who greatly have a handle on the voice and how to go about making sense of it.

She also specializes in teaching students process and development through highly mindful practices. She believes that in order for the voice to function optimally, the body, mind and emotional state of the singer must all be receptive and responsive in a positive way. This is because they are all inherently interconnected.

Christine teaches in a mindful manner to help students become more observant and aware of their own approach. By doing so we can realistically create the opportunity to arrive to better choices.

Christine’s extensive experience and knowledge in various styles and specialties in vocal intonation, along with her continuous education (over twenty years) and dedication to the authentic Italian traditions of bel canto and verismo opera has allowed for her to develop an approach that can extended into all legitimate styles of singing. Her personal approach to the voice is beyond comparison, nor can it be matched.

She has a phenomenal ear and can make rapid and highly accurate assessments of technical issues in a very brief sitting. Christine is exceptional at explaining vocal pedagogy and directing students on how to make corrections for themselves.

Christine is a dramatic soprano and is very confident and experienced with large instruments (that are more difficult to train for various reasons and require more specialized training). Having an extremely rare and large voice herself has given her invaluable insight toward fully understanding all other voice types and the discipline necessary to achieve efficient technique.

Many teachers can be limited in their view and teach "their technique" as opposed to helping the student develop their own technique and what works best for them. Christine has a great talent for figuring out what a students needs to do in their approach in order to achieve the results and keep the lessons progressive.

Developing proficient technique in a complete and effective way leads toward discovering the full capacity and beauty of our instrument without compromise. We need to find our voice to find ourselves as artist.

Her methods in vocal intonation translate directly and indirectly into all styles of legitimate singing, which she coaches many varying styles and will direct student toward appropriate repertoire. Students will learn the full potential of their instrument under her guidance. It is her belief that technique should always lead toward one sounding natural, no matter the style and that one fully learns their instrument’s capability to access endless artistic choices as a performer.

Christine offers very traditional based vocal lessons with a focus on improving technique through practical exercises and song repertoire designed for each student's unique vocal needs. She will offer necessary guidance and adjustments to ensure the student's continuous development.

Her goal is for her vocal students to discover their authentic voice and to find freedom in their technique and most importantly their expression as artists.

What you can expect to learn:

Vocal pedagogy and how the voice functions properly; how to effectively think about your voice to get the body to cooperate (aurally, physically, mentally, emotionally, etc.);

Integrating the body to fully support the voice Rebounding the body, which is at the core of support, but often times very apparently neglected because most trained singers/teachers from even the highest institutions do not understand how it works or do it effectively themselves. It is sadly becoming a lost art. This is the most advanced concept of singing and yet is absolutely necessary to master in order to access genuine support. Christine clearly demonstrates and explains how this concept functions and her refinement of it is by far not common knowledge.

Other concepts include sustaining an open throat, internal space for optimal resonances, legitimate dynamics directed from the body and compressed air, anchoring the body to maintain the larynx low;

Various placement techniques, air that can rebound using breath direction, centering the voice/cut internally by aligning the horizontal (mask) and vertical planes (chest, back of head, top of head and spine) support and placement that function together, developing a mixed middle sound that passes easily into low and high registers and broadens range; articulation that is aligned with vertical planes and naturally hooks up chest and top of head (releases in head) without forcing or placing, tongue, jaw and neck release, body posture that is conducive for support and keeps the body open and functional;

Various artistic and performance techniques, musical interpretation appropriate to context, time period and style, aligning the voice and body/acting to come across accurately in our portrayals and the process behind this, memorization techniques, execution of timing for expressive reasons and ways to think about timing that doesn’t conflict with the natural structure of a song, but allows for flexibility in phrasing, phrasal development and song development.

Piano:
Christine is also a highly sought out piano instructor for her ability to establish an exceptional foundation in beginning piano students and those who wish to continue their studies and build upon the fundamentals. She specializes in reading skills and excellent technique.

It is her belief that having a solid foundation sets the tone for determining if a student will continue with their studies and therefore this is the most vital part of a student's development and future progress.

She teaches Russian technique, which allows for flexibility, strength and tonal beauty of musical lines. This technique can be applied to all styles of playing piano such as pop, jazz and is not limited to just the classical repertoire.

Her goal is for all of her music students to become increasingly independent as musicians to where they feel confident to teach themselves and others and to ultimately find enjoyment in the process of learning music.

Her approach helps students advance their technique, reading proficiency, including music theory and expand their artistic capabilities.

Education and continuation of voice:

She received her music education in classical vocal performance from George Mason University and has vigiourously continued her studies in opera with Mrs. Fabiana Bravo, who studied with Luciano Pavarotti and Renata Scotto and has had a fabulous career singing at the Met. Christine specializes in Italian for classical rep.

General styles I coach:
Opera (bel canto and verismo) classical, sacred, hymnal, traditional, jazz, r&b, folk, and other variations of these popular styles.

Christine also has an international recording career as an adult contemporary artist.

What do I expect from students who are applying:

Those who are very hard working, motivated, passionate, dedicated, responsible, considerate, humble and serious about lessons and greatly improving as musicians should apply only regardless of aspirations as a hobby or professionally.

I strongly believe that music is a discipline and this is how it will be approached during lessons. This is a teacher-student effort. Taking responsibility for your part is a must. That means trying to the best of your abilities to put my advice and guidance into practice away from lessons is necessary to your improvement.

I am looking for potential long-term students who are willing and ready to work hard in a practical and realistic manner, regardless of age, learning needs or proficiency.

Singing is a long-term sustained process to develop that can absolutely not be rushed and I want students who understand this. I have very limited availability and I am only seeking serious students who have a positive, professional attitude and will value me as a teacher. You need not know anything about voice, just have a good work ethic and attitude :)

I have some musical experience as a hobby (piano, violin, choral arts), so I can be somewhat critical when I meet musicians. I have to say, though, that Christine is an extremely talented vocalist and instructor - I daresay a vocal genius :) The way she describes and encourages understanding of abstract concepts about air direction and body support is very unique. While it remains technical, it also makes you think differently about your body in terms of physical and emotional space. If, like me, you're a technical-minded person in the more general sense, this kind of approach is helpful because you have to engage both sides of your brain. I'm always challenged at Christine's lessons, and there has been great improvement in my voice from 7 months of lessons with her. I'm also having fun in this process, which is why I continue to come back!

I highly recommend Christine. Give it a shot; you won't regret it.

Hi! My name is Rachel, and I have been teaching lessons professionally for over 10 years now. My primary instruments are voice and piano, and I also teach music theory/ear training/musicianship skills. I earned my degree in vocal performance from James Madison University, where I taught lessons to non-music majors as well as tutored general music for the student population. I also hold a masters degree in voice performance and pedagogy from the Peabody Conservatory. I would describe my teaching style as fun and relaxed, with a strong emphasis on healthy technique. Madeline is lovely. She is down-to-Earth, highly knowledgeable, and fun to work with. If you are lucky enough, you might get to hear her sing! I highly recommend her as a vocal instructor to individuals at all levels of experience.

My son really enjoyed his time with Madeline. Unfortunately, due to a move we were no longer able to attend this particular location. Madeline created an environment where my son felt very comfortable exploring different music, he always came out of class with a smile on his face. Madeline was instrumental in motivating my child to sing in front of an audience for the first time. This is an experience I don't think we will ever forget. She is encouraging and inspiring, as well as very talented and knowledgeable. We will really miss her.

Florentina is outstanding! She is incredible with my son, and I’m constantly amazed by how well he connects with her on the lessons. She is very professional, always on time and very communicative with regards to his homework and schedule. He’s now preformed both for family and friends, and also in front of an audience.
