Curtis L.

Sacramento, CA

About Curtis

Hello there! I'm a friendly and patient teacher who understands the frustrations that can occur when learning the guitar. Each individual student learns differently and having studied in the Guitar Institute of Technology program at Musicians Institute has given me a well rounded perspective on how to help my students overcome problems from many different angles. I first started out teaching only a handful of students on guitar in 2009. Since then my student base has grown and the art of sharing my knowledge of music has become a passion of mines. I enjoy teaching students of all ages and l
evels!

Growing up, I have always had a passion for music. I was listening to Pop, Top 40, Rock, Metal, Blues, Jazz and everything in-between. However, I didn't start playing the guitar or studying music until I was 21 years of age. This presented some challenges as most professional musicians start much earlier. But through determination and having great teachers guide me, the age old saying of "It is never too late", resonates loudly in my life.

I was self taught for the first year of playing the guitar. I ran into many problems and picked up bad habits. I noticed my growth as a musician had hit a plateau. I then decided to get serious and take lessons from professional teachers. I spent one year studying with Kurt Shiflet and three years with Musicians Institute alumni Scott Allen. After the four years of private lessons in Sacramento, I decided to study in Los Angeles attending Musicians Institute(G.I.T). After the two years, I graduated from the G.I.T program with a certificate in Guitar Performance. During my time at the Musicians Institute, I was instructed by Keith Wyatt, Greg Harrison and Daniel Gilbert (just to name a few). Having been instructed by these great musicians has proven to be invaluable in my career. Allow me to share the wisdom bestowed upon me from my great teachers to you.

I can also create a customized well rounded curriculum that is similar to what I went through at music school. Anything music related we can work on, nothing is off limits in our private lesson.

Boss E-Band Js10 and Fender Guitar

First Lesson with Curtis was great! He gave me take away sheets that he made personalized for my skill level and exercises that I have great need for. His skill and style are exactly what I was looking for in a guitar coach as well. If you like the work of Tony Iommi, Chuck Berry or Robert Johnson, Curtis is the man to see! Keep up the great work Curt!

Javier A.

Sacramento, CA

About Javier

My name is Javier and I love to teach !

I am originally from Guanajuato, Mexico and in my last year of high school, I decided to take private piano lessons with a local teacher and it was during this time period that I learned classical pieces by Beethoven and Mozart. I also took music notation and I tried a hand at composing, discovering a new way to communicate in terms of music.

After moving to the USA, I resume my music education, learning new concepts on classical, blues and pop styles, as well as chord progression and accompaniment pieces. After a year and after completing the teac
her training program, I started to teach piano from my home studio.

During this time, I took upon myself two more years of intense composition study and experimenting with some of the secrets of this art, which now has become one of my passion. In 2007 I earned a diploma from this institution and in the same year I released two CDs of my own compositions: Van Gogh Sunflower's and Dimes y Diretes.

This year I have enrolled in a music program at the Music Conservatory of San Francisco, where I am expecting to learn and expand my knowledge on technique, performing, and music ensembles.

For six years, I have been teaching successfully from my home studio, teaching students of all ages and with different music backgrounds.

*** Lesson Details ***
I teach piano and I specialize in classical and contemporary music styles

I am a strong believer of traditional teaching methods, however, I have learn that we all learn in different ways, so I let my students discover music by teaching them how to relate to the piano first, after they become familiar with the instrument by playing easy but wonderful melodies I start with the process of teaching music notation, scales, chords, analyzing songs, music history, exercises.

I teach all ages, I am very patient and supportive, never pushy but firm with my students goals.

Maria H.

Sacramento, CA

About Maria

With more than 20 years of teaching experience for the cello, I have taught students of all ages, throughout California and overseas. I earned a Bachelor's degree and a Master's degree in Cello Performance and am currently the Principal cellist for the Camellia Symphony, California. In addition, I am teaching all levels of cello and beginner violin lessons to my students in Folsom, Napa and Sacramento.

My professional performing experience began in Medellin, Colombia in 1985 with the Medellin Philharmonic Orchestra where I was their Soloist beginning in 1992 and later on, as First Cel
lo, from 1998-2002.

While in Colombia, I also performed with the Antioquia Symphonic Orchestra and the Antioquia Chamber Orchestra from 1991-1999.

I left my hometown of Medellin to come to the United States where I performed with the Texas Christian University Orchestra in Fort Worth, Texas in 2000. Returning to Medellin, I spent the next year with the Eafit Symphonic Orchestra.

Finally, I settled in Sacramento in 2003, coming here to earn my Master's Degree in Cello Performance while performing throughout the next year with the California State University, Sacramento Symphony.

In Sacramento, I have also performed with the Sacramento Metropolitan Orchestra and with several other chamber groups.

At this time, I am teaching all levels of cello and beginner violin. My students range in age from six to seventy years and enjoy learning in a relaxing environment at their own pace.

I incorporate several different teaching styles to meet each students' individual needs and abilities.

Maria was my first private cello instructor and I studied with her for 2 years. She is an extremely kind and warm teacher who made every lesson very enjoyable and immensely educational. She was very open to my ideas as well as my wants and needs as far as playing repertoire and pacing. It is rare to be taught by a professional performer that is quite so active in the area they teach; Maria's experience performing professionally has obviously given her a perspective that is valuable to any of us who want to excel at an instrument. It is a joy to see her perform and learn from her that way as well. I and all of her students had the opportunity to get our own performing experience in her recitals, which were fun and important to my musical growth. I am grateful to have started my education in cello with Maria's instruction; I am much better off because of it.

Maria is a wonderful teacher. We feel lucky to have her. She is an accomplished musician herself as well as an understanding and intuitive teacher. She has been teaching my daughter for 3 years now, and the results are beautiful.

Maria has been my cello teacher for 6 years. She has made learning the cello so much fun and such a great part of me life. She is very positive and sweet even when I mess up and she helps me feel good about my mistakes. She looks at what I do well and gets me excited about working on the songs. She always helps me stay in perfect pitch and helps me prepare for when songs get harder, by making sure I have good tequnique. She always knows what to work on to make my lesson as successful as possible. After six years of playing with her I am playing this amazing and beautiful music. The Bach Cello concertos and the other songs I play make me feel so happy relaxed and filled with joy. She loves the cello and being a musician. And every time you go to her lesson, you just feel the love she has for the instrament and the music and how she wants to share that feeling with you and help you have the same feeling. Maria is the reason I can play so well and she is also the reason I have continued to play for so long and will continue to play for the rest of my life. I am so happy that I have the most amazing, loveing and fun teacher in the world. I think everyone thinking of playing an instrament should choose cello just so they can take lessons with Maria. My lesson is the highlight of my week.

Our daughter has taken flute lessons from Sue for 3 years. These private lessons have provided our daughter with an excellent musical foundation and allowed her to develop skill in playing the flute. Sue has been very flexible in scheduling (when our busy schedule creates conflict). Most importantly, Sue has been supportive and relaxed in her teaching style to allow our very shy daughter to feel comfortable and confident in the lessons.

Sue was a great teacher, even though I only studied with her for a little more than a year. I think I was right up there with one of her favorite "hopeless causes." I started lesson with Sue when I was 65 years old, with absolutely no music background. I so regret that I didn't find Sue and undertake flute when I was much younger. She tried, and was pretty patient, but I think I was pretty hopeless.

Sue's teaching methods are multiple - level. She is inspiring and playful. She is my third music instrument teacher (after 8 years of piano & another 8 years of violin lesson), I learned something brand new about flute and music principles.

Her rate is extremely reasonable especially considering how professional and diligent a teacher she is.

I am very grateful to be guided to her when I was looking for a flute teacher.

Clay W.

Davis, CA

About Clay

Hello, my name is Clay. I am a bassist and guitarist with over 25 years experience. I am currently the bassist for a signed, touring rock band. When I'm not on stage, I like to teach my craft and hopefully inspire others. My goal as an instructor is to create a comfortable environment where students can express themselves and deepen their understanding of the instrument they play. All while ensuring that learning is exciting and FUN!

My teaching style involves discovering what interests and inspires my students and creating a unique curriculum for them, so learning is tailored to their spe
cific needs in an exciting manner. I am comfortable with beginner to advanced players. So, whether the student is brand new to the bass and needs to know where to put their thumb on the back of the neck, or they have years of experience and need someone to show them how to do slap/tap arpeggios and artificial harmonics, I am more than happy to help. Cheers :)
