Chuck M.

Portland, OR

About Chuck

Chuck recently moved to Portland, Oregon from Gainesville, Florida, where he was a staple of the music teaching and performing community for more than 25 years. Originally from Chicago, Chuck completed his BA in Music History and Masters of Music (MM) at the University of Florida. Chuck became obsessed with The Beatles when he began piano lessons at age 12. His first attempt at composing was actually improvising melodies over the ending chords to "Hey Jude". Along with playing Beatles tunes Chuck learned classic standards from a set of Reader's Digest Songbooks inherited from his grandmother. Chuck has performed with classic rock, top 40, funk, R&B, and jazz groups, and has served as an opening act for Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, and legendary Texas bluesman Clarence ...

Great music teacher!

I've been taking ukulele lessons with Chuck for over a year now. I am always impressed with his musical knowledge and appreciate the way he goes beyond the songs and also teachers me musical notation, chord progressions, and more. My lessons are always fun, with just the right amount of challenge to keep my skill development moving forward. Thanks, Chuck!

There are many websites that will tell you instructors don't like teaching adults, but Elisa was a wonderful and patient instructor for all ages. She is able to adjust her approach to accommodate all age groups and skill levels. It's important to let Elisa know what your goals are so she can mold the lessons to help accomplish your goals. Elisa also arranges group rehearsals and recitals to broaden the students abilities in group settings (optional).

Ian M.

Portland, OR

You can play anything on the ukulele! This is a great instrument, and has been referred to as the "gateway" to guitar playing. I am comfortable teaching all ages, and any style of music you're interested in.

About Ian

I have been playing and performing music since the age of 12. I started teaching when I was 19 and love sharing music with others and seeing my students develop into their own artists. I have been in several recording and performing bands, and signed to two major labels. I have songs licensed on major television shows and movies, including Grey's Anatomy, Gossip Girl, Chuck, Veronica Mars, and more. My teaching style has always been to meet my students where they are at, and help them achieve their own musical goals. It's a goal of mine for my students to leave the very first lesson with a sense of accomplishment.

Ian is extraordinary. He teaches me guitar and my 5 year old son ukulele (at different times ;-) !). Ian is able to break down the learning process into understandable steps and keeps us from getting overwhelmed or frustrated. He celebrates our successes and helps overcome the frustration inherent in learning something new. Ian makes makes learning fun and easy - could not recommend him strongly enough!
