fun songs with both hands, and know the staff notes.

Branden N.

Sunnyvale, CA

About Branden

Branden is a successful graduate in music with a concentration in composition and jazz performance, completing his degree in only three years. He is a passionate performer as well as a dedicated teacher. He was awarded Cum laude for his great academic achievement. Branden is an accomplished songwriter, composer, musician, and teacher. Originally born in Chicago, Branden is now based in San Jose area, playing various events throughout the South Bay.

Branden has been hired to play local gigs as well as a contract to tour with a jazz band. His experience in teaching guitar for the last 4 years
has ranged from teaching elementary school classes to private lessons.

*** Lesson Details ***
From past experiences teaching students ranging from 7 to 14, Branden has developed many methods in accommodating the different learning styles of students. In general, there is a very casual atmosphere that stresses learning without the strict environment of a classroom. Beginners will be comfortably eased into learning, learning some music theory as well as fundamental musicianship skills along the way. More experienced players will be taught more advanced skills, while delving more into the understanding of the music they are playing.

Students will be encouraged to learn the music that they enjoy listening to, and collaborate with the instructor in developing lesson plans. It is important to bring out the most in the student by allowing the student to feel as involved in their learning as the instructor.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Multiple guitars, two amplifiers, pedalboard, comfortable private space.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide an guitar amplifier and guitar, though I generally expect the student to provide his own guitar. I also expect students to purchase their own books, though I can provide certain sheet music and supplementary supplies if necessary.

*** Specialties ***
I can play a variety of styles, though my specialty lies in the field of jazz. While I may not be the most experienced classical player, I am still quite proficient in classical guitar. My biggest strength is combining classical technique with jazz songs and styles.

ABOUT TAKE LESSONS
I came across TakeLessons and was skeptical about what I would find. The customer service has been excellent (thank you Rafael!). Okay, like any company that would like you to enroll in their service, you might find them pushy. But if you're really interested in learning music of any sort, then go to TakeLesons to get your start. I did and I'm happy :-#

ABOUT BRANDEN
As a "grown up", finding guitar lessons around the Bay Area is no easy task. I was pretty sure Branden would be impatient and patronizing given I'm really old and don't know the ABCs of music.

I was very, very nervous driving up to Branden's with my acoustic guitar. I mean, would he just look at me and say you're too old to learn anything?

What a refreshing surprise! My fears were imaginary.

I've had 2 lessons so far. Branden is easy going, absolutely gets it and is no-fuss. We stick to our lessons, he is quick to point out where I'm going wrong and very patient #please don't change that Branden!#. He also highlights techniques to help learn smarter. Make sure you take your notebook with you when you go, he gives homework and it would be nice if you track it in the same place.

Also, I'm worried about booking appointments at different times and TakeLessons/Branden assured me that can be worked out later. Good to know.

Branden is a great bass guitar teacher.

Branden is a great teacher. He is skilled and patient. He understands that beginners want to get started on challenging songs as soon as possible and he helps with that. After 3 months of lessons, he helped me get accepted to my school's jazz band.

I have absolutely been delighted with my teacher Linda. At almost 50 years old, I was apprehensive about learning to play a new instrument, but she is so welcoming and encouraging. I have been taking lesson since the summer, and I look forward to seeing her every week. Even if I don't get in as much practice as I would like, She is understanding of life's commitments and never makes me feel bad. And despite my MANY questions, she takes the time to explain in detail so I can understand and incorporate the lesson in my playing. I never feel rushed during my lesson and can't wait to surprise her the next week to show her how much I've learned..

Hello Students/Parents:

I tend to work mainly as a "For hire" drummer on multiple acts.

I currently play with Street Drum Corps ("Percussion ensemble of the Year" from Drum Magazine! -2012) and Out of The Blue. (Hit band)

*** Lesson Details ***
During our first lesson we will discuss plans that cater to your needs, and customize th
em.
I want to help you reach your goals and make you happy as a drummer, so I am open to teach you anything no matter where your strength or weaknesses may fall.
Next, we will pick a fun area to work on, and a challenging area to conquer. For example: we will work on a fun song/groove-- then we will work on reading and/or rudiments.
I am also very patient and Flexible to those students whom have special needs, or want to go slower.

I teach using a combination of modern, traditional and personal books, and Popular music charts and lead sheets for drums are written by myself, for the student.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I will bring the following: my laptop for music purposes and songs, and my curriculum.
I expect my student to have the following: A pair of sticks, a practice pad/or small sized drum kit, headphones of any kind, and a music stand. I will plan to use one drum set switching off.

"œWhen the student combines his/her playing with a strong practice, playing, and performance regimen, they are bound to get better and improve to continue making music a concrete hobby in their life."

Thanks!
-Jeff

I've gotten so much better!

So far, with just having three lessons with Jeff, I feel that the amount that I have progressed in three weeks is far greater than the amount I've improved in the two years I've been drumming! I highly recommend Jeff to anybody.

John L.

Cupertino, CA

About John

I am an experienced instructor focused on beginning students of any age. It is never too late to learn the violin. I use the Shinozaki method as the primary textbook with Suzuki and Miller as supplemental texts. Students will be introduced to the history and structure of the violin and will learn how to read music, accurate intonation, identifying notes by ear, correct posture, proper bow holding, breathing and relaxation techniques. Methods I've developed over the years will help beginners master techniques that normally take years to develop and will allow students to quickly build up co
nfidence and overcome psychological barriers.

Here is a recommendation written for me by a former student:

I am pleased to write a letter recommending Mr. John L. as an excellent violin teacher. When I started playing violin at the age of 43, I was a raw beginner with no previous musical experience. I am now in my eighth month of lessons. I am very pleased with my progress and even happier to say that I play daily with enthusiasm and joy.
Mr. L. has contributed immeasurably towards a very satisfying practical, psychological and spiritual violin practice. Mr. L. is a true inspiration. His use of intuition, patience and balance have helped me in my search for joy in movement and expression through the violin. Mr. L. has many qualities as a person and as a teacher. The one that stands out in my mind is his sincerity of heart. He wants me to play well,to be happy and to love my violin. Every time I leave my lesson I think how blessed I am to be receiving the gift of his teaching. I am not just a violin student to Mr. L. I am a whole person. He taps in to his life experience to communicate with me in a most effective manner. I believe his use of breath and body work have been key to my success.
The benefits of learning the violin with Mr. L. have spilled over into other parts of my life. I feel my life has been enhanced physically, mentally and emotionally. Mr. L. has instilled in me a love of music and learning.
I am so glad that Mr. L. is with me on my journey with music. I have no doubt that it would have been a very short trip had I not had the good fortune to be taught by him.

Mr. John L. is an absolutely fantastic teacher. I am so lucky to have found him as my teacher. I am a beginner and knew nothing about the violin and how its played. So, I was starting off on a fresh note. Take lessons helped me find Mr. John L. I am 2 classes into it and I like a lot of things about my lessons. Let me list a few:
1. Mr. John L. has a unique approach to teach, he inspires, he is easy to talk to and he reminds me of my grandpa who is caring and cares to teach well.
2. He brings a lot of tips and tricks from his own life and daily mundane activities to teach the skills.
3. I can see he tries so hard when he sees a student is not getting something right, he sits down and explains the philosophy behind it and tells a story, teaches a trick and asks us to play again.
4. His house is very clean and well kept to create an atmosphere to learn.
5. Having studied arts, philosophy himself, he blends the concepts from life very well when he teaches to play.
I enjoy learning from him and like I said, for a beginner who had no ground, this methodology has helped me a lot. I like the approach a lot.

I recommend Mr. John L. to anyone who has an open mind, like to learn the why and how of violin playing and most of all, how to enjoy while you play.
