With over 10 years of playing the trumpet under my belt, my specialization is in Jazz, along with theory. I can help beginners grasp the intricacies of playing trumpet, to advanced players looking to broaden their knowledge. Too many times have I taken private lessons from unenthusiastic players that take the process too seriously. Music should be fun! Which I prioritize in my lessons. I look forward to working with you!

About Tom

I have been playing trumpet for over 10 years. I've been gigging around the New Haven area for about three years now, and have played numerous styles. From traditional jazz, to bebop, to New Orleans Second Line, to Funk. Being immersed in these styles has made me very accustomed to playing in those

Provided a lot of insight into what I was doing wrong on the instrument, and gave me good exercises to do weekly. Definitely recommend.

I normally use the Standard of Excellence method books for many of my students; however, I am open minded to adjusting to each individual student's musical needs, whether it be Jazz, Classical, or whatever style music the student is focusing on. Other excellent methods are the Ed Sueta Book, Rubank Method, Breeze Easy, Achievement in Excellence, and perhaps the First Division Method Book. For Drummers, I prefer the Haskell Harr Method, or the Buddy Rich Method Book, as well as the Breeze Easy Method. I always play my instrument along with the student so that he/she can hear how the music is supposed to be played in regards to the notes as well as the rhythm! This way, we all have fun learning!

Exactly what you want in an instructor: knowledgeable, patient, and supportive!

As an adult learner who plays multiple instruments, I’ve had every type of teacher you can imagine. It’s always a struggle to find a teacher able to work with the unique requirements of being an adult with adult obligations and time constraints.

Tom, as it turns out, is that rare teacher able to not just handle these unique requirements, but is also fantastic at finding and focusing on knowledge gaps, whether it be playing, theory, tone, or anything else I throw at him.

Prior to taking lessons with Tom, I had barely held a trumpet, and I’m progressing at a rate far faster than I had imagined I would.

So don’t bother looking elsewhere, Tom is who you need!

Outstanding start.

While I had previous experience playing an instrument MANY years ago, I never played the piano and started taking lessons with Lori as an adult. In almost no time I was able to read the bass clef (left hand) notes and within the year I had learned all the scales (majors and relative minors - both harmonic and melodic) and arpeggios (root and inversions). I was also playing "real" pieces of music.

Lori stresses good technique and good practice habits and can suggest more than one way to master a concept. She also makes learning the piano fun.

"Because the lessons are in our home, it’s been a very relaxed, enjoyable experience for our son and that was important to us. His former teacher was great, but Dr. Pugh has pushed him to an entirely different place musically. Dr. Pugh’s professionalism and enthusiasm for music are inspiring and he has brought our son’s trumpet playing to another level.
