Hi my name is Nicole; I have over 25 years of teaching experience. (I began teaching beginner students while I was in high school) and I myself began classical piano training at the age of 8 and continued through college. I also studied music theory, ear training and sight reading.
As a student, I participated in yearly NYSSMA competitions, performed in recitals and National Music Guild competitions as well. Following my passion made my decision to major in music the obvious choice. I wound up being the recipient of the first Ralph V. Ritchie Music Memorial Scholarship at Nassau Community College (which needless to say was a huge honor). I studied under Rose Tanner, who was a member of the Juliard faculty, performing many piano solo recitals as well as singing madrigals in a quartet. I truly loved what I was doing. I went on as a perfor
mance major at West Chester University in P.A. for three semesters and it was there that I realized that I wanted to teach piano. I've always been extremely creative and patient, so I thought teaching piano would be a perfect fit for me and it turned out that I was right! I also have had many other jobs working with children, such as being a camp counselor and a nanny for several different families and now I’m a mom as well ! I decided I wanted to write and perform my own music in an original band as well. So I decided to leave West Chester and began several of my own original musical projects and solo performance acts. I've played the piano/keyboard, wrote music/lyrics, sang lead and backup vocals or did a combination of the above.
During this time I worked closely with other advanced teachers and musicians to gain other methods, styles and techniques of playing and teaching music. I found out very quickly that playing a keyboard while standing up is both stylistically and technically different then sitting at the piano,
I'm patient, creative, positive and fun to work with and I really enjoy teaching. I love working with children and I'm passionate about passing my love of music along to my students. I also love to explore improvisation with students and song writing if the student and parents(s) are interested. I myself try to always be open to change and growth. I feel that if you think you already know everything, that you’re not open to learning..and should be).

*** Lesson Details ***
I specialize in teaching classical piano to students of all ages, including extensive experience in teaching autistic, special-needs and disabled children.
Sensitive to individual needs and abilities, I prepare students with curriculum, lesson plans and weekly assignments on a one-on-one basis.
Curriculum may include technique, sight reading, theory, ear training, scales, NYSSMA and performance/recital preparation. Working with both students and their parents together we can determine individual goals for each student.
Scheduling is maintained and coordinated to accommodate students and their families.
In the first three to six months, my intention is to instill a good practice ethic.
Students will be positive and motivated towards playing their instrument.
They will have a basic understanding of theory, scales and technique.
Additionally, students will be able to play a small repertoire of pieces.

Whether you are a beginner or an advanced student, my lessons are organized, productive and most of all - fun!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Lessons in a recording studio. Where you have a choice of an acoustic upright piano or a digital Yamaha keyboard. I also own a farfisa organ and a moog synthesizer.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I always try to get a feeling from each individual student as to which series of beginner books will work best for them. Obviously if the student is more advanced (and already working on a specific piece) please bring that with you to the lesson. There are so many beginner books to start out with. I like to have a lesson book, a theory book and a technic book as well. Once the student has learned the basics, I like to occasionally let them choose a fun song (pop or rock) as a reward for working on the classical criteria that I prefer. I find it helps keep them motivated to plat their favorite songs to their friends and have some fun. (even though that would be work as well).

I specialize in classical music for piano study. I have taught the Suzuki method with a few very young students. I have also taught other styles such as rock and roll , some Broadway songs and top 40 upon request. I also teach some students different styles of songwriting techniques.

I have been taking the world by surprise since the age of 4. I began studying at Queens College at 6 years old and was a recital pianist by the age of 12. I was a consumer of music, from the Music Theory lessons on Saturdays, piano lessons on Thursdays and voice lessons on Saturday afternoons, my life was filled with music.

It is to no one's surprise that I completed my first demo at the age of 13 and was performing for Queens Colleges audiences at 14. I went on the rank high in the NYSSMA series in both piano and voice. I also went on to study music in college and began touring with gospel troupes nationally. Since then I has done many workshops, Master Classes, tour dates, theatre shows etc. Too many to date. I am a sought after teacher for voice, piano and broadway singing. It is a joy to offer Reiki to curious, open clients in need of energy healing. Reiki is a noninvasive energy healing technique totally separate of any religious affiliation and available to anyone. It is a difficult to describe the relaxing, soothing, and deep-healing effects of Reiki to someone who has never experienced.

Excellent first voice lesson. Jillian is warm, encouraging, and very knowledgeable. I was surprised how many "technical" issues she introduced me to (optimal breathing & how best to practice it at home; appropriate use of falsetto at upper limit of bass voice range, etc.) . Looking forward to continued lessons. (Much better use of what used to be my copay for psychotherapy! I've also joined rehearsals with new Encore-NYC chorale group in Manhattan, for people over 55. Music is giving me a real emotional lift in my retirement.)

Personal Statement

I believe that progressive teaching must employ constructive pedagogical strategies to foster meaningful musical experiences for students to build and to exhibit competence. My pedagogical model is comprised of a student-centered approach to produce attainable challenges and to affect affirmative changes that will physically, technically, and emotionally enrich each student's performance.

During instruction, I exercise scaffolding methods to facilitate the students' zone of proximal development and innovative questioning to augment students' cognitive thinking and critical thinking skills. I am a graduate of Columbia University in Music & Music Education, M.A., Ed.M. I have a comprehensive background and training in Piano, Voice, Vocal Pedagogy, Vocology, and General Music. Fay is such an amazing teacher! I got into Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School thanks to her. Best Teacher I've had, she helps train your voice and goes through the vocal anatomy so you understand techniques such as proper breathing, posture, coordination, grounding, acting, diction...etc. I've been her student for about a year three years now and I have to say that my voice has improved so much as a performer all thanks to her! If you get the chance, at least take a class, you will not regret it!

I'm a gigging musician and teacher who graduated from Oberlin College in May 2015 with a degree in Musical Studies and Physics. I was on the Division III tennis team there for two years as well. I pride myself on patience and empathy no matter what I teach, whether it feeling the pulse of a complicated drum groove or solving a challenging physics word problem. For music lessons, I strive to bring in a context of genre fluidity and history, so that a student knows where and what to explore on their own even when I am not in the room to show them. Overall, my teaching is all about inspiring students to do well and make their strengths work for them, rather than dryly coming up with the "right answer" or playing a tune the "right way" to get from point A to point B.

Want to learn how music works behind the scenes? Music theory is the study of what makes up music from a note by note basis. Many topics of music branch under music theory, from reading music and rhythms, understanding basic chords and chord progression, to arranging and composing piano solos, orchestral works, or jazz reharmonization. I have studied music theory intensively and can teach it from a pure beginner's standpoint to an advanced collegiate level.

I have over 10 years of experience on the Clarinet and other reed instruments. I am a senior undergraduate BA Music Education major at the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College and have studied classical clarinet as well as saxophone under various professors at the college.

I also have experience in teaching NYSSMA solos, intermediate/advanced techniques on the saxophone and clarinet, and have run and directed my own orchestra and jazz band during my time in college.

I have a reputation for achieving whatever goals I set my sights on musically, from performing to composing and conducting.
