Mandolin is an interesting instrument in these modern times as it has a history of either bluegrass or European music but has been used in Rock songs too. So it's a lot of fun working out how each student wants to use his mandolin - what style or combination can be quite unique. What's your interest?

I teach all styles and all ages but my specialty is in electric rock music and applied music theory as in guitar soloing and improvisation as well as song crafting. I can teach a student any song requested by looking it up on you tube if you don't have it and immediately transcribe it for you! I also have an extensive library of songs already charted and copied to hand out.
Also, since all teachers are not equal, what separates me from others who give lessons is that I have done extensive training in Teaching and Study Skills. My lessons are very understandable and properly arranged to learn in an organized fashion. So my students progress very well, really learn music and enjoy the lessons

About Ryan
Ryan is a musician from Jefferson Park who plays a plethora of different instruments. He specializes in guitar, banjo, mandolin and ukulele, but also dabbles in accordion, piano, drums, harmonica and several others. Learning to play instruments is one of the true pleasures in his life and he hopes he can make it one of yours, too.
As a teacher Ryan's goals are fairly simple. First and foremost he wants to make his lessons comfortable, interesting and fun. A close second is to build a strong foundation on the basics, so as we learn more advanced techniques we have a solid base of technique to build upon. Currently Ryan is a co-lead singer, songwriter and stringed instrument player for the local band Distant Brothers, a folk rock band based out of Chicago. They play venues throughout the Midwest, with some of the notable venues being House of Blues, Metro and Cubby Bear in Chicago. Another highlight of his time with the band has been a collaboration with Oistrakh Symphony Orchestra, where he not only was able to play in collaboration with the orchestra, but joined in the arranging and conceptualization of some of the pieces played.

I grew up in North Carolina, around bluegrass and Old Time music. I started playing mandolin as a teen and studied Irish mandolin in College for 4 years. I play bluegrass/Old Time and Irish mandolin and am comfortable teaching both. I also play pop style mandolin. I teach basic music theory with mandolin lessons, also fingering techniques, tunings, chords, and styles. I love to teach mandolin students tunes, so they can understand how mandolin works when played alone or with others. I love folk music, and I would love to share that love with students.

A two-time Acoustic Music Seminar participant and a graduate of the Berklee College of Music, mandolinist Jake Howard plays and writes music that is galvanized by roots music from around the globe. Music has taken him all over the country, yet he was introduced to acoustic music in his hometown, the greatest bluegrass city of all time: Akron, Ohio. Jake joined his uncle’s bluegrass band (The Blue Ribbon Bluegrass Band) playing mandolin and spent the next two years refining his craft.
