Bass guitar can be a lonely instrument to practice on your own. I use instruction books that come with a CD to play along with to simulate real playing with a drummer and band instruments. This prepares a student to learn songs of their choice and be able to perform with others.

For the beginner we start learning immediately, by choosing what
bass and why. The different methods of sitting with the guitar, as well as standing. We then go over tuning your instrument, these things make us more familiar with the instrument. We then learn new songs by playing either chords (harmony) or melodic lines, (melodies or scales). The beginner will also learn to use "proper technique" which includes playing on fingertips, thumb placement for the fretting hand and other approaches. The picking hand techniques include and are not limited to finger picking, or the use of the plectrum.
For intermediate player it's all about theory and practice. This level of student will learn scale and chordal theory, and apply them to existing songs as well as learning the new songs with the theory in mind. More advanced picking techniques and the ability to know when to use what picking approach when reading the the rhythm figures on the staff. Knowledge of song composition is ...

- I also take lessons from him- I've got a music background but had no previous experience with the guitar before and Mr Mandel was able to adapt his teaching style to accommodate that nicely.
-I highly recommend him!

LOVE MUSIC? PLAY IT!
I am a former classroom music teacher, with an MA in Music Education, and I have been a working musician/recording artist for 30 years. I am patient and experienced in getting results. I believe the recipe for music education is Knowledge, Practice, and Fun = Joy. Spreading joy is a valuable service for good community.
I can help every student achieve his or her goals, whether it's to lead a campfire circle or play Carnegie Hall someday. (One of my students opened for B.B. King, and most of my students will play music for the rest of their lives. Some have grown to lead their own bands.)
I offer lessons in:
Guitar: All styles: Beginner to Advanced.
Piano, voice, ukulele, saxophone, and recording: Beginner to Intermediate.
