At the age of 4 I began producing musicals in my basement with my sister. This progressed to acting classes, piano lessons, and eventually the school musical in sixth grade. I began taking voice lessons when I was in eighth grade and have never looked back. Through high school, I focused on both classical and musical theatre genres, having leads in high school and community musicals and operettas. While attending the University of Delaware for my Bachelor of Music, I majored in Applied Music: Voice and had the privilege of performing lead roles in Sweeney Todd, The Pirates of Penzance, The Marriage of Figaro, and Die Fledermaus. In addition, I performed two recitals. I was also fortunate enough to be a member of the University of Delaware Chorale, traveling to both China and Spain for tours and competitions. I then attended UD for my Mast
er of Music in Vocal Performance where I maintained a full studio of undergraduate voice minors as a Graduate Teaching assistant.

I took my first pedagogy class at UD and began teaching voice lessons at the Community Music School during my junior year. My experience as a teaching assistant shaped me into the teacher that I am today. I love teaching and helping students reach goals! With my thorough pedagogical training and varied performance experience, I have a great deal to offer my students.

*** Lesson Details ***
During my time with you, I strive to assist you in taking risks, discovering the joy of music, and making progress with your singing. No matter what your goals are - All-State Choir, opera, musical theatre, or just having fun, I love helping you reach them. By looking at different genres of vocal music, we will focus on many different aspects of singing, from music theory, to expressive performance, to the foundation of healthy singing.

I believe that every student is unique and learns in his or her own way. Therefore, I tailor the pace and focus of lessons on your interests and abilities. I believe it is integral for all students to have an understanding of music theory and therefore, work on theory and sight-reading. In addition, I think a well-rounded musical education is key, and will work on an array of genres with you including folk songs, art songs, and musical theatre. We will work on 2-5 songs at once, and will consider a song "learned" once you can perform a song from memory.

Words are what separate the voice from any other instrument. Therefore, I will work with you on ways to examine the poetry and lyrics of each song in order to portray the message of the words.

Megan was the best voice teacher I've had. She was very personable and friendly and more importantly, she was very supportive of my goals. She really emphasized bringing out the 'free' voice as opposed to just molding it towards a particular style, which helped boost my confidence. Highly recommended!

Meg is a wonderful teacher who I would recommend to anybody. One of the things I loved about her was how patient she was with me, even when I became frustrated with myself. Nick teaches beginner guitar to both me and my 8-year-old daughter. He is knowledgable, patient, engaging, trustworthy, and communicative. He tailors his lessons to the individual, and my daughter and I are both progressing as a result. Plus, we're having lots of fun! When my daughter went through a period of not wanting to focus and saying everything was too hard, he handled her doubts and attitude in a gentle yet serious way and got her right back on track. Hey guys, don't read any further. Just book your first lesson with Nick. He's an incredible musician...guitarist, singer and song writer. I learned so much from him and wouldn't be as confident performing without his support. Nick really knows how to dissect a song and teach it from the ground up. He starts simple with easy learning and then has a great grasp of when to take you to the next level. He has taught me so much about music and was always so generous with his time. He'd always stay after the lesson had ended just to help me practice one more song or even just to talk about records and tell me some stories about The Band. Originally from Massachusetts, I have been teaching children and adults flute for over 20 years. I teach from the very beginner student to the very advanced and I have additional training in the Suzuki Method which is especially helpful for beginning young children. I am primarily a classical flute teacher with extensive experience playing in various classical music settings.

My approach is friendly and patient. As I get to know my students, I can better guide them to accomplish the goal of learning flute but, in the process, I never lose sight o the person whom I am teaching. It has to be a pleasant experience as well as challenging. I have learned throughout the years when to relax my expectations of perfection and when to intensify them. I am looking for a good attitude in my students. My students come to me trying their best during
the lesson time and also making time in their schedules to practice. Every student is different and has different goals. I consider the differences while I am teaching them. My younger students don't usually know how serious they are about the instrument. For them especially, it has to be fun and interesting. I make every effort to combine my students in small chamber music groups for recitals. Nearly all of my students participate in regular studio recitals with a pianist provided to accompany them.

Our son attended a neighborhood concert and was struck with the idea that he’d like to learn to play the flute. We knew absolutely nothing about flutes at that time, but we consider ourselves so, so fortunate that Frannie came to us by recommendation.

Frannie is fun and has a great sense of humor. She is endlessly patient and relaxed, but also firm when she needs to be. She always keeps the music interesting for him – for example, after a period of working hard on the pieces in the Suzuki Method repertoire, she encourages him to mix it up and play some things just for fun, like the popular themes to Star Wars and Harry Potter.

Our son, now 9, has been studying with Frannie for almost a year now, and I cannot believe how much he has grown and improved in such a short amount of time. Frannie inspires him to play his very best; he works hard to emulate her gorgeous tone. He absolutely loves his weekly lessons, he looks forward to her student recitals, and he is motivated to practice every day.

It is a beautiful thing to watch your child fall in love with making music, and we credit this to Frannie. She has our highest recommendation.

I took lessons with Frannie for more than ten years, starting at age 4 in an introduction to music class at the Brooklyn Music School. Through her I found not just a great love for music but a lens through which I discovered and learned about the world. With Frannie, once a week for nearly my entire childhood, I would learn to practice and work at a piece or phrase, or to interpret and have and opinion on music I played, or to play like I mean every note, and so on endlessly. Those skills were some of the earliest and most important lessons I had about how to live and enjoy my life, and art, and how to work hard, and care about what I do for my own sake and no one else's. And I don't believe just any teacher could have done that for me. Since moving on I have often felt a different excitement and deep understanding of music than many of the peers I met who have spent far more time than me studying music.

I'm still a musician. I graduated recently from Bard College with a degree in music and have since played onstage in a very successful off-broadway musical. I've played in many orchestras including with graduate & conservatory students at Bard, with the New York Youth Symphony Orchestra, and at LaGuardia High School (formerly Music & Art). I have moved on to other instruments, and forms of music, but I credit Frances not just for showing me how much I love music but for teaching me in many ways how to enjoy and get what I want from life. I can't recommend her enough.

My daughter Coco studied with Frances for a number of years. Without question Francis was the best music teacher Coco ever had, and she's had quite a few.
Francis is generous, creative, and inspiring to work with, she has the perfect balance of qualities that a music student needs. She's highly motivating and makes demands of her students which stretch them to achieve their full potential, yet she never pushes past their limits; Coco never felt stressed by her practice but always wanted to fulfill the expectation of excellence which Francis instilled in her. Lessons are taught very close to Grand Central Station convenient for commuters from Connecticut or Westchester. Not to worry, there is no judgement in my studio, in fact, that is my one rule! The studio is a safe place to take risks and explore with our voices. We will work on the proper breathing for power and control, smoothly singing from the highest to the lowest notes in your range, and extending beyond what you never dreamed possible, how all the muscles in your body affect the sound that comes out of you and how to gently optimize your sound, and how you affect your sound by your thoughts feelings and emotions. Somatic Voicework The LoVetri Method takes registration understanding to another level and combined with resonance work to take the chest voice up into the head voice fo a healthy Broadway sound.

The McClosky Technique offers the anatomical understanding and affect of the extrinsic muscles of the face, jaw, throat, neck, tongue and alignment, and how these elements affect the smooth functioning inside the larynx.

I incorporate these styles into my own method of approaching the voice by equally addressing Breathing/Registration/Resonance/ Relaxation, and Mind/Body/Emotion.

Sue Anne is wonderful!

I came to New York for school and to further my training and aspiration to pursue musical theatre. I saw Sue Anne's ad in Hunter College. Her work focuses on how to sing naturally, something I have always tended to struggle with. I often found myself losing my voice the night before my musical's opening night, because of my constant belting and lack of a balanced relationship between my head voice and chest voice. After being with Sue Anne for a few months, my voice has felt and sounded much healthier! I have gained knowledge of the parts of the body involved in singing and especially breathing, and now instead of wailing away at any high note, I am singing with more ease. For the last fifteen years, I have taught piano lessons to children, college students, amateurs, and Grammy award-winning professionals. I started teaching while working on my masters degree at The Juilliard School. Since then, I have performed throughout the United States and earned a doctoral degree in piano performance, but these days most of what I do is teach. I am classically trained, though I have worked with students on a range of musical styles. I get tremendous satisfaction from helping my students overcome their challenges. Regardless of the age or experience that a student brings, my goal is to help make piano playing personally enriching and musically satisfying.

Here are the qualities I think you should look for in a teacher and the ways in which I think I offer them.

MUSICALITY
A teacher should have an ear for what
makes music colorful and beautiful. I believe that the goal of musicians should be to attune our inner ears to the music behind the notes that sit on a page before us and then let that music flow through us. We all hear different qualities in the notes, but as long as we honestly try to get inside the notes before we touch our instrument, we can all make beautiful music.

TECHNIQUE
Once we have an idea of the way we want the music to sound, we need technique to produce those sounds. Early in my training, I experienced discomfort from the poor way in which I was playing. As a result, I had to retrain myself completely. I was fortunate enough to find three teachers of the Taubman Approach who helped me to understand the connections between playing in a coordinated way and playing beautifully. As a result of having made many mistakes myself and then overcoming them, I have developed the ability to see what is holding back my students and to help them find better ways of approaching the piano.

MATERIALS
The best music for students is the music that motivates them to practice. That said, at certain times, I think some pieces will help a student get to the next level, and others will only tie the student in knots. I have taught a lot of repertoire in a variety of styles. I can give students at any level music that is appropriate for them. I am also always eager to work on music that my students bring me.

To give students skills that directly apply to their playing, I also incorporate theory, ear training, sight reading, and scales into lessons.

INSTRUMENT
Although I have no qualms about teaching students who have electric keyboards, acoustic instruments give better aural feedback to pianists about the health of their technique. At least once a week I make sure my students get to play on an instrument that responds to their efforts with a beautiful sound: either my own 1913 Steinway B, or one of a variety of good grand pianos at the midtown studio where I teach.

PRACTICE METHODS
Students can expect to learn a lot in their lessons, but lessons usually only happen once a week. The quality and quantity of the student’s practice the rest of the week is critical. At each point in the process of learning a piece, there are different practice methods that help a pianist get to the next step. I think I can see where students are in the learning process and can guide their practice so that their time spent at home is optimized.

PERFORMANCE EXPERIENCE
Many students enjoy playing music for themselves, but when they are asked to play for others, the joy of the experience turns into fear of embarrassment. There is no quick and easy solution to performance anxiety, but having worked through it in hundreds of performances, I can say there are certainly ways to reduce it and even make performing joyful. Understanding that playing for others is an experience of sharing, not “impressing,” and practicing in a way that helps one to see, hear, and feel the music the instant before one plays it are at the core of my method.

PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES
I teach children and adult students. I do not force anyone to perform, though I encourage it. I am a member of two associations of independent piano teachers that sponsor recitals and competitions for my young students. My adult students and I usually get together at my apartment twice a year for a piano-food-fest.

FLEXIBILITY
Ultimately, there is no single way to teach all students. Students come to me with different degrees of musical training, physical awareness and dexterity, musical tastes, discipline, and patience. It is my job to figure out what will light each student’s fire and help them to practice through their challenges so that they can enjoy the beautiful and all-consuming experience of making music.

I had a great experience taking piano lessons from David. After several years away from the piano, I wasn't entirely sure where to start. David took me back to the beginning and focused on fundamentals and technique. Not only did this improve my playing, but it also helped me develop awareness of areas that I could work on when I practiced. I found David to be a wonderful teacher who teaches a good balance of technique and artistry, and I would take lessons with him again.

Lessons with David were my favorite time of the week during college. He worked on both basic techniques and finer details and nuances, which made the lessons very creatively satisfying. As a student, I hold him in the highest regard. If you haven't signed up for a lesson, you're missing out!

I always wanted to learn how to play the piano and it wasn't until the age of 29 that I decided that there was no better time than now to start taking lessons. As a beginner, I am so thankful to have David as my teacher. He stressed the importance of technique even though he knows that I just really want to learn how to play so I could show off at a dinner party. Without this, I wouldn't have progressed as quickly as I have. He is incredibly patient, which is what I like most about him as a teacher. Given that I started with David as a true beginner, he had to go over the same things repeatedly, for months on end, and he was never once impatient. He also thinks about his students outside of his lessons and that speaks volumes. I only like certain types of music and am quite stubborn about only playing what I like. He not only understands this but will send me links to songs and brings pieces of music to our lesson because I often have difficulty finding pieces that I like or that are the right fit for my skill level.

If it weren't for David's steadfast positivity, his kindness and his genuine desire to see me grow and learn as a piano player, I would not still be taking lessons from him three plus years later. Luckily for me, that is not the case and I look forward to having many more lessons with him. I highly recommend David as a teacher!
