In my studio, I believe that my role is to steer students toward a deeper understanding of themselves, their instrument, and their relationship to music. I tailor my teaching to the needs of my individual students, who currently range from age 7 to adult, often adding improvisation and extended techniques to increase my students€™ awareness of the potential of the flute as a channel for one€™s creativity.

About Roberta
Flutist, Roberta M., is equally at home playing classical and new music. I Care If You Listen has extolled her “lush, full tones… even among the best professionals, not many flute players sound so compelling in a lower register.” Praising her “extreme adventurousness,” New York Concert Review said she “riveted with her performance, inspiring one to want a repeated hearing.” Roberta is a founding member of the Cadillac Moon Ensemble, a quartet of unusual instrumentation dedicated to commissioning and performing new works. To date, the group has commissioned over fifty pieces.

Roberta holds a Bachelor of Music with highest honors from the University of Colorado at Boulder, a Master of Music from SUNY-Purchase College, and Doctor of Musical Arts from the City University of New York Graduate Center. Her teachers include Robert Dick, Tara H
elen O’Connor, Alexa Still, and Jean Rosenblum. Roberta resides in Brooklyn, New York where she teaches privately and is on faculty at Great Neck Music Conservatory.

Roberta has performed with groups including Duo RoMi (with pianist Mirna Lekic), the Portland String Quartet, SEM Ensemble, Wet Ink Ensemble, Argento Chamber Ensemble, Wordless Music Orchestra, Ensemble Moto Perpetuo, Lunatics at Large, Kagel Nacht, Philharmonic Orchestra of the Americas, Cheyenne Symphony, and the Greeley Philharmonic in venues including Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, Alice Tulley Hall, Merkin Hall, The Kennedy Center, Bargemusic (with tenor Robert White), and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. As a guest artist, she has appeared at Bloomsburg University and the University of Southern Maine. She has recorded on New Dynamic Records, Meta, Bridge, and Innova Records.

Roberta has been a Bang on a Can Summer Institute fellow and a participant in the Institute and Festival of Contemporary Performance at Mannes College, as well as participating in festivals at Banff and Domaine Forget. Roberta recently won the Artists International Special Presentation Award and was presented in her debut recital at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall. Other awards include: Purchase College’s Baroque Concerto Competition, Bay Chamber Summer Music Woodwind Prize, Dante Alighieri Society of Denver Music Scholarship, and the Emily K. Rand Award.

Roberta was patient and was obviously an experienced teacher. I teach and I understand what it takes to put a lesson together so that the student gets the most out of it, while pushing the student to do better, but not too much to discourage them from moving forward. She hits that sweet spot! I would recommend her to anyone who was serious about learning.

I have been playing for 12 years, but am young enough to remember (and still feel!) the struggles of practicing and playing the flute. In addition, haven taken over 5 years of Music Theory and Ear Training at music conservatories, I can provide a great way for beginners to learn to read music as well as to hear it.
I will incorporate these aspects into your lessons:
-scales/technique
-articulation
-tone
-intonation
-vibrato
-rhythm
-musicality/being inspired
-how to practice/practice methods

Happy flute playing! :)

I am a very experienced flute player and teacher with many years of experience. I am currently a senior studying flute performance at the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, and I am very understanding and helpful in lessons. I try my hardest to explain things in as many ways to help students learn individually, as every student learns in different styles.

About Sarah
Hello! I am currently in my first year of my Masters at NYU where I am studying flute performance, where I am studying under Keith Underwood and Soo-Kyung Park. I am also an Adjunct Instructor at NYU, where I teach undergraduate NYU students private flute lessons. I recently graduated from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music this past May, where I received a Bachelors Degree in Music Performance with a minor in art history. While at IU, I studied under Kathryn Lukas and participated in various ensembles and concerts, focusing mainly on chamber music.

I am originally from Atlanta, Georgia, where I studied under Christina Smith, the principal flutist of the Atlanta Symphony, and I also participated in a numerous amount of masterclasses and performances with many different flutists. I have been playing the flute for 16 years, a
nd I have been playing the piano for 18 years. I also play the piccolo, alto flute, bass flute, clarinet, and the guitar.

I have been teaching the flute for over 8 years. I have taught students of all ages and levels. I also have worked with high school students in assisting with flute sectionals through the band program.

I am experienced with a large variety of styles, and I am open to exploring different types of music.

My goal is to give students the ability and resources to grow to become an overall musician. I work hard to find out how different students learn, and I adjust my teaching style to fit different learning needs. I aim to help students find a passion in playing music, so I try an find out what interests a student and work to incorporate that into flute playing. I am very encouraging and enthusiastic in my teaching.

I have released 3 albums under my artist-name MikeMRF. My sophomore album, Mob Music, went to #1 on the iTunes Jazz Albums Chart, while my most recent EP went to #11. I have had my music played on U.S. and international radio, and charted on Billboard Most Added and Billboard Heatseekers. I have played with jazz greats and toured both the U.S. as well as Japan.

I used to play music from 3rd grade to college, but never had the opportunity for piano lessons. I always wanted to play such a beautiful instrument. Over 30 years later, I find Mike and my passion for music was reignited. I made him aware of my intimidation of piano (I never played bass clef music, nor read two lines of music at the same time). Mike responding, in a calm demeanor, told me not to worry, it'll happen. He was able to play the songs (impressive he can sight read so well), break down different key positions, allow me to master each hand, and the help me put it all together. Over a year later, I'm playing songs that I never dreamed that I would play. Mike inspires you to be connected to the instrument, is in tune with your anxiety about getting it right, and reminding you of the joy music brings. His delivery of technique isn't clinical, it's like having a coach. Not only is he well versed in music, he's a super nice guy to boot!

Mike made me feel so at ease with this gentle demeanor and patient approach to teaching. To hear him play is inspiring since he has the confidence of someone who has been performing in front of audiences for many years. He has already explained jazz piano in a way that de-mystified a lot of things I never thought I could do myself. Now I understand exactly what techniques I should be practicing to level up as a pianist. This guy can really play anything though, from rock to jazz to R&B to straight pop, which makes him a perfect instructor no matter what style you are interested in. Highly recommend his lessons.

I have had the pleasure of studying with Dr. Sonett for one semester this year during which time I have experienced immense improvements in my playing. Dr. Sonett creates a comfortable, warm relaxed environment, and even though I tend to be shy she put me at ease which exponentially increase my ability to learn from her. Dr. Sonett made sure to know what each student's focus was to make sure that lessons were effective for what the student wanted to get out of them. I have never had a teacher that I felt completely comfortable with and that has increase my love for music. I echo the sentiments of the two above students, Dr. Sonett creates a very welcoming space to express yourself through music and personalizes lessons to fit the individual. During just the few short months I have studied with her I have improved much more than I had in several years with other lesson teachers. I have enjoyed studying with her, and I would highly recommend her to any students looking for lessons.

Dr. Sonnett taught my 7 year old daughter this past year, and I was very impressed with her warm, relaxed, and consistent approach to learning. My daughter's technique and musicality progressed rapidly throughout the year, and never at the expense of the joy of music. My daughter can be a challenge - as her mind wanders easily - yet Dr. Sonnett always brought the focus of the lesson back to the flute in a respectful and often humorous way. It was a wonderful year!
