Is Finnish hard to learn?
Yes. The Foreign Service Institute rates Finnish as a Category IV language, noting that it can be more difficult for English speakers to learn. It is not related to Latin or the Germanic languages, meaning that there are far fewer similarities to English than most other European languages. Many grammatical aspects of Finnish are complex and require time and attention to learn.

Why is Finnish so different?
Finnish is not an Indo-European language. It is a member of the Finno-Ugric family, along with Estonian, Hungarian, and several other, smaller languages. Despite this, it has lived alongside Indo-European languages, such as Swedish, for thousands of years and has acquired some grammar and vocabulary. The result is a unique, rich language rooted in Finnish culture.
All of the Germanic and Romance languages of central and western Europe are Indo-European, so Finnish can seem different and somewhat exotic. It follows different grammatical rules, and there are far fewer English cognates than you often find in other European languages. Though there may be more to learn, Finnish is a beautiful language and the key to a wonderful culture!
