Music Theory can seem like a hard or boring subject to learn and it has been for a simple reason. All theory info needs to be APPLIED to practical uses as it is being learned! My training in Study Skills has shown me how to teach a piece of theory and then immediately give the student examples and show ways to use it in songs... now. This provides the correct balance of Information and Application. Theory is a breeze done this way.

I teach all styles and all ages but my specialty is in electric rock music and applied music theory as in guitar soloing and improvisation as well as song crafting. I can teach a student any song requested by looking it up on you tube if you don't have it and immediately transcribe it for you! I also have an extensive library of songs already charted and copied to hand out.

Also, since all teachers are not equal, what separates me from others who give lessons is that I have done extensive training in Teaching and Study Skills. My lessons are very understandable and properly arranged to learn in an organized fashion. So my students progress very well, really learn music and enjoy the lessons

Pete is the best instructor that I have ever had. He is the only person I ever had that was able to explain things in a way that I could understand. I have taken lessons from other people and was not able to learn anything.

I have worked with over 2,500 students in one-on-one lessons, educational workshops, and outreach concerts. My lessons focus on developing technique, practice strategies, a good sound, aural skills, music theory knowledge, and stylistic fluency.

My private students have placed into selective programs including the Greater Hartford Youth Wind Ensemble at The Hartt School, the Connecticut Music Educators Association All-State Band, and Interlochen Arts Camp. I teach saxophone at Manchester Community College, South Windsor High School, Camp Encore / Coda, and Music and Arts East Hartford. I believe students of all ages can find enjoyment and success in music.

You'll benefit from my years of experience as a professional performing musician. From 2012-2016 I toured with the Asylum Quartet, an award-winning ensemble acclaimed for virtuo
sity, creativity, and innovation. I have also performed with the Juilliard Orchestra, the U.S. Coast Guard Band, and International Opera Theater. I hold a Master's in Music from The Hartt School and a Bachelor of Music summa cum laude from Arizona State University (ASU).

***Lesson Materials***

Saxophone students must have an instrument in good repair and required accessories (reeds, mouthpiece, etc.). Piano students must have access to a tuned piano or an electric keyboard with touch-sensitive, weighted keys. I am happy to recommend instrument and accessory brands; please check with me before a major purchase. Quality, working equipment is critical to students’ success.

I periodically request that students purchase books and other lesson materials.

IMPORTANT: If you are planning to buy a saxophone, piano/keyboard, or mouthpiece, please consult with me first. Having good-quality instrument/accessories will help you achieve your success. There are a number of cheap products that are easy to find and purchase, but they are often of poor quality. I can recommend options for your first purchase that may be more expensive, but will help you succeed in the long term.

About John
My job is to get your child crazy about the piano. If you have to nag your child to play, something is wrong. The basics are, of course, important, but until you have gotten the child to accept and love the piano as an object of enjoyment, all that practicing will go nowhere.

How do I do it?

I think it's easier to learn the piano if you are having fun, and that means playing music that you like.

You can always choose what you will play in lessons, and lessons are designed around your preferences, and move at a pace comfortable to you. The basics are still taught, but at a pace that your child finds comfortable. The result of this is that I will get your child to go the piano and play by themselves with no nagging.

I have had the complete classical conservatory experience, yet that doesn't mean I expect that of you in any way,
especially kids.

For children, the best start involves games and immediate playing to give the child a taste of the real joy of making music. Reading exercises have their place, but not at the very beginning.

I want you to play a song you know and enjoy your first lesson, and I can easily help you do that.

It's in your interest to play meaningful music, (to you) right away. It is possible for anyone can play music far more complex than what they can read on a page, so my first goal is to get you started playing real songs on your first lesson.

John's biggest strengths are his patience, understanding and seeming endless facility with music. I read music but not fast enough to allow me to play good pieces, so John translates everything into physical movements. This makes it very easy to play interesting music, which makes me want to play more. I think he has shown me how learn, how to refine things so they are satisfying. I highly recommend him as a teacher, for beginners or advanced.

My son is six years old and has been taking piano lessons with John for six months. John is a unique and engaging teacher. His extensive knowledge of music and skill at the keyboard were apparent from the beginning. He can easily demonstrate a multitude of songs and then teach them on the spot. My son is excited to play a "whole song," be it Sponge Bob or Beethoven. John's teach-by-numbers technique appeals to my son's love of numbers and patterns yet he is also quickly learning how to read sheet music. John really is skilled at disguising a lesson on technique or theory as a game. He is goofy while at the same time encouraging and supportive of my son. He keeps it light, fun, and skill appropriate. Since he comes to our home, I also appreciate John's focus on the lesson - he arrives and departs in a timely manner. I highly recommend John as a piano teacher.

STUDYING WITH ME:

Learning guitar should be interesting and fun! While we're studying all the different aspects of the instrument, you'll also be learning how to play your favorite songs and solos! I approach each student as an individual and structure their lessons according to what I determine they need, as well as what they are interested in musically. I concentrate on many different areas; ear training, theory, playing technique, improvisation, various styles of music, and, the physics of the guitar. Understanding how the instrument works is important in my opinion. My long term goal is to teach a student how they can teach themselves down the line. Understanding why you’re playing something is just important as knowing how to play it. I aim to give a student rich and well rounded one-on-one time!

GENERAL BIOGRAPHY:

ave been teaching and performing for over a decade both in the US, and in England. I have played in various bands and have produced independent artists. I have worked for a recording studio and for various academic institutions including the Filomen M. D'Agostino Greenberg Music School in New York city.

I obtained my degree from Purchase College in New York and am a member of their Conservatory of Music.

*** Lesson Details ***
I construct lessons for each individual student depending on their musical tastes, goals, and current skill level etc. I want each person to get as much from their time studying with me as possible. Within three to six months, I'll have you working on timing, theory, ear training, improv, and songs/styles of music you may be interested in. I'm laid back, however, I expect at least the minimum practice time between lessons, which I'll change throughout the course of our time together depending on your skill level etc. Practice materials I draw up are included. I write out everything in plain English and do not require the use of sheet music!

Rather, I work with the student with theory and arrangement conventions to really understand the music. This intern, greatly sharpens their musical ear and helps them to learn music much faster because they understand how it is put together; why and how it works, etc.

Cameron is an excellent teacher for me. I am 11 years old and have been playing for almost a year with him. He is patient and makes me stretch to be a better guitarist. He takes time to find songs at my level of learning and accommodates my tastes in music. I would recommend him for anyone who is interested in playing guitar.

A solid teacher with a lot of experience

Guitarist Brian H. studied at The Hartford Conservatory and the Hartt School of Music, graduating at the top of his class with honors from The Hartford Conservatory. Brian has been a guitar and bass instructor at Choate Rosemary Hall since 1999. Brian also teaches at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, The Music Shop in Southington, and is the owner of Guitar Star Studio, located in Glastonbury, CT. In the past, he taught at The Hartford Conservatory and Riccardo's Music in East Hartford.

Brian has performed in many bands with diverse styles of music. As a past member of the John Jeski band for 13 years, he was a voting member of the Grammy Awards. Brian has 25 years experience playing in rock/pop bands, and currently performs with country artist Frankie Justin Lamprey. He has had the opportunity to perform several times a
t the Oakdale Theater, the Rock Cats Stadium, and has also done a number of radio and television interviews. Brian has provided liturgical music for many years in CT; also, in Sicily and Rome. Mr. H is a patient, enthusiastic teacher who enjoys helping his students master the art of guitar.

*** Lesson Details ***
In the first half of the lesson, students can expect to learn music fundamentals from a guitar method book, i.e. how to read music; I also teach guitar tablature. Depending on ability (beginner, intermediate, advanced), I will show them chords, scales and how to play a guitar solo. The second half of the lesson is spent with the student learning their favorite songs and building a repertoire (song list) for possbile future performances.

Mezzo-soprano Rachel A. has captured audiences throughout the United States with her rich and warm timbre, beautiful blend, and dynamic stage presence. A native of Stockton, California, Rachel was born into a musical family and quickly developed an affinity for the performing arts. She first fell in love with classical music as an oboist and gradually found her niche as a singer through her passion for languages, literature, and theater. In the fall of 2012, she relocated to Connecticut where she continues to be an active performer of opera, oratorio, art song, crossover, and new music.

Most recently, she was seen as the mezzo-soprano soloist in Capella Cantorum Masterwork Chorus and the Old Lyme Congregational Church Choir's performances of Handel's Messiah, the mezzo soloisit in Vivaldi's Gloria and Magnificat with the Stamford Chora
le, with Hartford Opera Theater as Elise in Dawn Sonntag's Verlorene Heimat, Pythia in Nkeiru Okeye’s We’ve Got Our Eye on You, and as Miss Paige in Dan Shore’s An Embarrassing Position which was nominated for Best Featured Ensemble in a Musical through the 2015 Broadway World Connecticut Awards. She has also performed with Opera Theater of Connecticut, Connecticut Lyric Opera, Madison Lyric Stage, Greater Worcester Opera, Revolution Opera Alliance, the Simsbury Light Opera Company, and the Greater Meriden Concert Chorale.

Prior to moving to Connecticut, Rachel lived in St. Louis, Missouri, where she frequently performed with the St. Louis Symphony as a member of the St. Louis Symphony Chorus. She has also performed with Winter Opera St. Louis, Union Avenue Opera, and the Southern Illinois Music Festival. In 2012, Ms. Abrams had the opportunity to be a sponsored young artist with Winter Opera St. Louis where she performed the role of Echo in Ariadne auf Naxos, covered Musetta in La Bohème, and performed in the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical review: A Grand Night for Singing. Ms. Abrams has also performed with Opera Fort Collins, Loveland Opera Theater, Victorian Lyric Opera, and Opera Classica Europa in Bad Schwalbach, Germany as an apprentice artist. Additional operatic credits include Zweite Dame in Die Zauberflöte, Giannetta in L’Elisir d’Amore and Miss Pinkerton in The Old Maid and the Theif.

A passionate performer of Jewish music, Ms. Abrams was featured as a soloist in Martin Bresnick’s puppet opera, Der Signál, with the Hartford Independent Chamber Orchestra during the 10th Annual Celebration of Jewish Arts and Culture at Charter Oak Cultural Center in October of 2014. As an active performer of art song, Ms. Abrams has collaborated with various musicians throughout the New England region to create diverse and accessible art song recitals. In April of 2015, Ms. Abrams and pianist Michael Korman presented a recital featuring the works of Schönberg, Ruth Schönthal, Previn, and Weill with the Maurice Greenberg Center for Jewish Studies at the University of Hartford.

Since the winter of 2016, Rachel has been an active performer with Lollipop Opera Outreach. This touring opera company brings the joy of opera to thousands of school children throughout New England. This season, she will perform the roles of the Mother/Witch in Hansel and Gretel, Babe in The Three Pigs – A Pig Tale, and participate in the premiere of a new interactive “culinary” opera adventure: A Fairytale Kitchen.

In addition to being a passionate performer and collaborator, Rachel is a private music educator dedicated to the success of her students. Ms. A maintains a private studio of voice students out of her home in West Hartford, Connecticut. In addition to her private teaching studio, she is the alto section leader at St. James Episcopal Church in Farmington. She has also taught at Farmington Valley Academy Montessori in Avon, Arts Place in Cheshire and Summit Studios in Manchester.

As a voice teacher, Ms. A provides her students with a holistic, healthy, and age appropriate technique based on her studies of vocal pedagogy, years of lessons from master teachers, and her personal experiences as a performer. Through personalized vocal exercises and repertoire assignments, students will learn how to achieve a proper vocal onset, management of air pressure, increase vocal stamina, and maximize vocal freedom through balanced resonance. I grew up in music, and started playing the piano when I was 6 years old, and began composing and using Logic Pro two years after that. I have been playing saxophone for 8 years, and am currently working to gain my bachelors degree in music performance from California State University, Fullerton. During my saxophone instruction I also began learning clarinet as a supplementary instrument, and have been playing it for 3 years. What I love about music the most, is how deep it resonates with the human soul and how the music stems from the passion of the composer and the performer.

I feel that my job as a teacher is to instill a sense of passion and love for music in my students, in addition to teaching them the instrument and the rudiments of music. I also am a strong believer that the best way to grow as a musician is to perform, to play
with other musicians, and to listen to as much music as one can get their hands on. My teaching style emphasizes deliberate and consistent practice schedules and a very broad and visceral understanding of music as a whole.

When playing any instrument a little theory goes a long way! When teaching theory I will present it in a way that is relevant to the guitar! Rather than intimidate and confuse my students!

Lessons include: Musical Alphabet, Enharmonics, how to read basic musical notation, All the notes on the fretboard, Major Scale, Minor Scale, Diatonic Movement, The Number System, Cycle Of 4ths, and Cycle Of 5ths.

If any of these sound scary or like foreign language it's okay, I will keep my classes at a nice slow to steady pace. And I will make it all relevant to the guitar!

Jonathan French is a great instructor. He is an extremely knowledgeable and patient teacher. He allows you to learn at your own pace while still managing to provide challenging lessons. In total, I have had five guitar lessons from Mr. French and all of the lessons have been fantastic.

I've been waiting to learn piano for 40 years and Will made it easy and fun. I was thrilled to be playing my first song with both hands by the end of my first lesson.

About Jake
Hello!

I am currently earning a masters degree in viola performance at The Hartt School, with separate emphases in music theory, conducting, and strings pedagogy.

In the past year, I was a teaching artist at the Incredible Children's Art Network in Santa Barbara, where I was exposed to many teaching methods and techniques, among them the El Sistema method of strings pedagogy. I was also a musical mentor at Santa Barbara Strings, where I led string sectionals, and coached chamber music groups.

Teaching is a great opportunity to get to know a young artist. My primary goal as a teacher has always been to help my students discover their own musical voices. In our lessons together, we will explore your personal musical interests, and I will also introduce you to an applied technical approach to the viola and violin, which I will cater
to your individual technical and musical needs!

My daughter began her first year of violin lessons with Jake at her school when she was in 4th grade . She enjoyed taking lessons with him and remembers discussions they had about the history of the violin. She said he was a good teacher - patient and explained things well. She received a good fundamental background in the violin and that has carried over to her continuing into her second year of lessons.

Fantastic teacher! I worked with Jake at the Incredible Children's Art Network (formerly of Santa Barbara, CA) and had watched Jake build positive healthy relationships with each of our students. He focused on establishing a safe learning environment and individualizing lessons for students with various needs.

His easy going temperament, open mind, and professional mindset made him easy to work with as a colleague.
