Piano was the instrument I ran to when I was tired of classical guitar in college. As a consequence, I develop a very special relationship with it. I've learned to use it as a vehicle for expressing music in a way that's more free than any instrument that I do. Things I teach on piano usually include...

-Basic technique: scale fingerings, finger mechanics, dynamic posture
-Music Learning: how the piano makes music easier than with any other instrument, and what is the most efficient way to learn music
-Improvisation: how to explore music freely using easy keyboard techniques
-Composition: how to find and discipline your creativity through exploratory piano exercises

About Jonathan

I studied music therapy and music theory at Temple University from '06-'10. Learned a lot. Then again, I learned even more teaching at a school for kids with learning disabilities and working as a traveling street performer. Jonathan is incredibly skilled, a great teacher, fun, and very patient with our gregarious and somewhat distracted 9-year old boy. He has creative, tailored teaching techniques, will try new things, but also keeps our son motivated and progressing. He responds perfectly and patiently to my son when he veers off task, and gets him back on task. We are absolutely thrilled and couldn't have found a better teacher.

My son has special needs related to an anoxic brain injury. This can create frustration with simple things like learning a new chord that feels funny or is difficult to move your fingers to. He always checks in with us to see what concerns we have and then, helps us by offering suggestions on how to make something easier or less frustrating to learn. I think Jonathan does a good job of meeting us where we are. Jonathan is patient with both of us. Today, he talked to my son about practicing communicating so we can understand how to help him learn. He talked to me about it being ok to break away from the timing and to hit chords at the same time as my son so the song can come together.

Jonathan is flexible and easy to work with. My son has some struggles as a result of an anoxic brain injury. Jonathan is very understanding and patient with my son. He has also helped me with advice and suggestions on how to work with my son. We love the spirit of the ukulele and the good vibes it has.

I help students learn a variety of styles from classical to jazz to pop. Something that I especially emphasis is improv and composition which is something we can get started with at any level and we usually dabble in from the first lesson. I teach students age four and up. Anyone can enjoy playing the piano and I help students play the songs that most interest them while making sure they are well-rounded musicians!

I use a variety of curricula depending on the age and interests of the student.
-For students 4-6 I use Music for Little Mozarts where we learn music with stuffed animals based on famous composers like Mozart Mouse, Beethoven Bear, and Clara Schumann-Cat.
-7 to 12: I use the Piano Pronto method book series in the their 45 minute lessons. These books incorporate a varied repertoire with many songs the students already know and enjoy.
-For teens and adults I have some series that contain varied selections of different genres, some that focus on jazz, and some that are ...

Ella es una increíble pianista y maestra. Tomé casi 6 meses de piano con ella y aprendí muchas cosas. Me encantaba que elegía canciones que me iban a gustar y de acuerdo a mi nivel. Disfruté mucho las clases!

"I have been taking lessons with Eric for almost three years and I would highly recommend him to anyone thinking about taking any kind of music lessons. I initially started with blues guitar lessons because I wanted to be able to play my favorite songs or maybe impress girls. Over the years Eric got me interested in so much more.

I learned music theory, jazz standards, improvisation, fingerstyle techniques, how to play and sing at the same time, and how to write and record my own songs. He inspired me to take on piano as a second instrument, initially through him but eventually through classically trained instructor.

What started as basic guitar lessons for a potential hobby turned into my tiny apartment becoming cluttered with musical instruments and audio recording equipment. For this I only have Eric to thank."

Need for Speed: 5 Piano Finger Exercises to Increase Speed

Do you have a need for speed? Below, piano teacher Ryan C. shares some piano finger exercises that will help you increase speed when playing the piano... What makes a great pianist fun to watch?
