You will find great fulfillment and a sense of accomplishment if you set aside time on a regular basis to nurture this very important part of what makes you who you are. Think of me like a personal trainer. I will encourage and inspire you while you develop your skills and express yourself through a variety of textile based media.

Teaching is a wonderful extension of my work as a professional crochet and knit designer and technical editor. A web search will reveal some of my published work over the last decade. As a craft teacher in the NYC area for over 8 years, I have worked with individuals, groups and classes of all ages and skill levels. Most of my experience focuses on working with older adults and people with special needs. Minors must have a supervising adult present. I do not work with groups of young children.
I have studied the history and mastered the skills to make and teach a vast variety of textile techniques. Please see my experience.
If you are using this site without the assistance of a TL Rep, I recommend the schedule as you go option. I often have openings in my calendar sooner than the site allows. After we make contact, we can choose the best date and time.
*** Lesson Details ***
Please let me know what you would like to learn or make before your lesson so that we may be fully prepared with any materials, tools, equipment, books or handouts. Students are expected to provide all their own tools and materials unless other arrangements are made.
Recommended duration for in-person lessons is 90 minutes. A surcharge may be added for travel outside of areas accessible by one MTA fare or expected travel time exceeding 90 minutes.
*** Specialties ***
Textile based crafts including crochet, knitting, embroidery, sewing, patchwork, plastic canvas, needlepoint, counted cross stitch, bobbin lace, historic textile and costume conservation and storage, and more.
I also love to research and develop craft projects for classes or master techniques students would like to learn.

About Melissa
I have been teaching since 2006 on a variety of topics. I graduated with an BA from the University of Wisconsin. My degree is in History with and emphasis on East Asian history.
I've taught all age groups from age 2 up to retirees. My teaching experience includes one-on-one and group classes in a variety of settings. I've taught corporate classes, private lessons, small groups, and traditional classroom lessons.
We have a student-centric philosophy of learning. Lessons are generally relaxed and designed to work towards accomplishing student determined goals. While all students will study similar fundamentals regarding technique, theory, and performance, every lesson is as different as every person. Special focus on topics like music theory, self-accompaniment, composition, song writing, and home recording are available as well.
What are your personal goals? We'll tell you what you need to do to get there, and help you take the steps to achieve your aspirations.
Lessons with small children are more focused on just having fun while developing a good musical foundation, but we prefer for them to have as much personal ownership of their lesson as possible.

About Renee D.

I grew up in Los Angeles surrounded by a family of artists and designers. Following my career in fashion and costume design, I began making one of a kind silver jewelry. I have been working with fine silver for 8 years, selling my design pieces in art galleries and online.
I have always tried to share my passion for all things artistic with my two children. By volunteering to run art projects at their school, I discovered the joy of teaching. I decided to combine that with my sewing expertise to help children and adults realize their creative vision. I like helping students explore their ideas while making a project come to life on the sewing machine.

Hi! I have been a nurse for 17 years, and I love teaching! I have worked in all areas of healthcare, and have tons of stories to share. I got my PhD in nursing in 2009, and study innovative ways to teach students that are holistic and student focused. You come first.
I have 3 small children who keep me very busy. But somehow it's never busy enough for me! I always need to be doing something, and MAKING things is my passion. I do all the textile arts (knitting, quilting, sewing, etc), and love construction (electrical, plumbing, woodwork, and anything that involves power tools). I believe these are life skills for anyone, but especially for women who often didn't grow up learning all the "how to’s." I create a comfortable environment, and believe laughter is one of the best ways for learning to happen.

I'm an artist and teacher. My main mediums are oil paint, cut paper, and fiber arts. When I graduated from Pratt in 2003 I received my BFA in Illustration and Art Education. After that I went on to grad school for elementary education. The perfect combination for helping people find themselves as artists while working on my own art.
After teaching in urban and suburban schools in CT, NY and Washington DC I moved to Germany where I taught English as a Native Speaker for three years. That's where I became fluent in German, learned a lot about myself, and worked on my cut paper bird series.

o discover what type of learner they are so that they could finally reach their full potential. Once a person learns how to learn there is no stopping them.
I intend to continue working hard to help people reach their full potential. When you become my student you will have my full attention. I will give you the tools to reach your goals whether it's painting something you are proud of, having a conversation in German, or knitting a sweater.
