For almost 25 years, I've had the privilege to have worked with thousands of performers who study with me from all over the world. I teach in-studio at my two locations in Houston and in The Woodlands, Texas. I also work with students who come to me from all over the globe via online over-the-web Skype lessons.

Originally from Detroit, I enjoyed being a "Jack of all styles" singer/musician for over 15 years. I was a professional musician performing Classical, Jazz, Pop, Rock, Gospel, Musical Theater, Commercial and Studio work, along with being very involved in Contemporary Christian music. While I very much loved to perform, I found myself drawn much more to the joy of teaching. I have been singing in Choirs and Bands for a number of years and learned more about my voice and singing properly in a 45 minute session with Eric than I have in all my years of performing. I now understand why I have been struggling to sing in my upper register and Eric has put together a personalized program to help me develop my voice and gain back my vocal range. Eric has a great sense of humor and made the session very enjoyable as well as informative. I look forward to my next session and would highly recommend Eric as an instructor.

I started my musical training as a pianist at YAMAHA institute at age 4 in Japan. I was selected to enter perfect pitch class. It was designated for students who have perfect pitch and potentials to be professional musicians.

I enjoyed playing piano and electric piano and won the 1st prize at Kitakantou Electric Piano Competition hosted by YAMAHA institute. Because of the intensive training, I have been accompanying my students' recitals and performance exams.

As a versatile singer, I was presented as an aspiring opera singer on the website of Maybelline New York. My voice was featured in short films for NEC, the Japanese technology company.

I was also selected as a finalist at the Opera Idol Competition at Lincoln Center, the Hariclea Darclee Voice Competition in Romania, and the Mario Lanza and Elaine Malbin Vocal Competition. Besides being an opera singer, I have been teaching piano and voice for 11 years. I have been fortunate to study with the world renowned teachers. I continue my vocal studies with Mr.Gerald Martin Moore who teaches Tony award winner Kelly O'Hara, Met star Renee Flemimg and Mr. William Hicks who was a coach for Luciano Pavarotti at The Metroplitan Opera. I'm almost afraid to write this review lest Asuka's schedule gets totally filled with new students:) I started lessons with Asuka Nov 22 as a beginner and by January 15 the notes I could sing increased by an octave.

My high C/C6 came by early December, a couple of weeks after starting with Asuka. Some of this is my voice type, but I believe anyone who works with Asuka will see improvement.

I am taking lessons with a well-regarded pop teacher from the same time period and I've developed almost entirely from Asuka's lessons vs the other teacher, and quickly too with consistent practice. What Asuka teachers carries over to non-classical singing also.

Asuka is not rigid in her approach, thankfully, and she is so nice about the million things beginner singers can correct. I don't feel embarassed singing in front of her because she is non-judgmental.

I did some online lessons when she was traveling, and I got just as much out of them so even if I leave New York I will continue working with her.

I take music very seriously but at the same time I like my lessons to be fun and a joyous experience. I am very patient and helpful with any strugg
les that may seem too hard to the student. I will start my students off with the basic vocal warm ups and then move on to material that they would like to cover and if so the student doesn't have material to cover, I will present them with material. Being a singer is not easy at all, so I will challenge my students by giving exercises that challenge them to sing for proficient. I will also bring in material that is brand new and ask the students questions about the piece. The student is in the lesson to learn everything about music, so any type of material that I feel will benefit them and help them move closer to their goal, I will definitely present to them. After 3 to 6 months students will be able to sing in the 3 minor keys and the major key. The student will also have knowledge and know how to sing at least 3 different modes. The singer will know how to read basic sheet music and perform it with solfege. The singer will also have 4 songs of my choice or their choice mastered and ready to perform in front of an audience. Lastly, the singer will have knowledge of proper breath control while performing, usage of a microphone, and intonation.

Keanon did a great job with catering to each singer's style in the group workshop. He is highly knowledgeable about singing and gives great pointers to make your song sound better. We practiced the new cadence for example of the deceptive cadence, the plagal cadence, and the phrygian. we learnt the basic root progression. a standard method of connecting triads with roots a fifth apart is to hold the common tone in the same voice and move all the other parts to the closest possible chord number. We learn about mediant triads s well.some ways using cadence that I can expand my harmonization practice is in general, when tempted to part write or analyze a chord in common-practice music as iii (in major), give the context further thought. i imagine with this knowledge it ill help me to compose a better harmonize song.
We practice together the scale degrees that are designated by Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3...), chor ds are similarly designated by Roman numerals (I, II, III). For example, in the key of C major the notes are C,D,E,F,G,A,B and we have designated them as 1,2,3,4,5,6,7. However, when we consider the triad chords in the key of C we have Cmaj, Dm, Em, Fmaj, Gmaj, Am, Bdim. These are designated I,II,III,IV,V,VI,VII. When speaking about these chords, for instance in the key of C major, we would call Gmaj the five chord, Dm the two chord,

The easiest way to find an interval's name is to first, count all the pitch names present, including the notes themselves (ignore sharps and flats at this point). Then, find out (had it been missing a flat or sharp) what type of interval it would be, depending on whether it is perfect (a 1,4,5,8) or major (2,6,7). If there are no sharps or flats, you are done. If there are, figure out if the flat or sharp decreases or increases the distance between the two pitches. If it increases the distance, the interval is augmented. If it decreases the distance, and the interval would otherwise be perfect, it is diminished. If it decreases the distance and the interval would otherwise be major, it is min that is what I learnt

Mariana was great! Very professional and able to explain the techniques in a very clear way. When I began, I was very nervous and self-conscious. She was patient and kind and never made me feel embarrassed!

She really knows her stuff and technique. I'd been to a few voice teachers before and they were great singers, but they didn't seem to have to really KNOW the techniques behind singing. Mariana clearly is a wonderful singer and has great training in what she does.

We can work on operatic, song, musical theater, and jazz repertoire, languages and diction, dramatic interpretation, and performance skills.

I believe very strongly in singing repertoire appropriate for your age and level, and will not do anything to compromise your development.

Learning to sing requires a great deal of hard work and commitment. Each lesson, I will leave the student with specific exercises and pieces to practice before the next lesson. New exercises may pose challenges, but that's part of the process! If you are struggling with a particular assignment, please do not hesitate to communicate with me, and I will guide you through it, or find an alternative to help you achieve the same goal.

We are all different, and so have different learning styles. Singing lessons should be therapeutic, gratifying, and above all fun! I don't ever want singing to turn into a chore or something you don't enjoy. This should be fun!

Student should have either a piano or keyboard. A CD player, mirror, and yoga mat are a plus.

Originally from Seal Beach, CA, soprano Kelley received her Master of Music from Rice University, where she studied with world-renowned voice teacher, Dr. Stephen King, and her Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from The University of Michigan. She has appeared in full productions and scenes as Contessa Almaviva (Le nozze di Figaro), Fiordiligi (Così fan tutte), Frau Fluth (Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor), Musetta/Mimì (La bohème), Corvina (Volpone), Hanna Glawari (The Merry Widow), Countess Madeleine (Capriccio), and Curley's Wife (Of Mice and Men). As a concert soloist, Kelley has sung Mozart's Requiem and Vespers, Rachmaninoff's Bells, Brahms' Liebeslieder Walzer, and Schumann's Spanisches Liederspiel. She regularly performs in cabaret shows with Lone Star Lyric Theater in Houston, TX, and started teaching privately in 2011.

I have learned so much over the last year. Not only can Kelley teach but she can also sing all styles and genres of music. I highly recommend her as a teacher. She is professional, well organized, and makes great use of our lesson time.

Kelley is the best! She's very knowledgeable in technique, languages, and repertoire, but she also made it really fun for me. I always wanted to sing but was really nervous about it, so I'm so especially thankful for her warm and supportive personality and professionalism. Highly recommend!

Kelley is a qualified pedagogue who exhibits that all too rare balance of consummate professionalism with a friendly personal touch. She teaches a healthy vocal technique, based on current science and traditional methods, always keeping an eye on the artistic and expressive goal. While some teachers just work on your voice, Kelley also coaches the student as they work to integrate their ideas into a musical/dramatic presentation. Kelley has trained with some of the best teachers in the United States and has a wide knowledge of repertoire both in the classical and Broadway/cabaret genres. Her extensive language skills also make her a great resource for students studying the classical repertoire specifically. I do not recommend voice teachers unless I trust their knowledge and professional demeanor implicitly.

I'm currently an Assistant Professor of Voice working in a school of music at a famous university in a major US city. Over the years, I have sent a variety of my students to work with Kelley, from ages 14-60. Across the board, they all have had a rewarding and fun experience, making significant progress both technically and in their self-confidence. I wholeheartedly recommend Kelley to anyone looking for a voice teacher.

I have been an active opera singer and flutist for the past 10 years, and have extensive training and experience in a variety of musical styles (baroque, classical, romantic, modern, art song, chamber music). Because of that, I am especially well trained in breath management. The one thing you will take away from my lessons, is how to breath and sing comfortably, and naturally without tension.
