Eric B.

Houston, TX

While I teach music reading, as any other good teacher should do, for those students who are interested in learning to play by ear, I also concentrate on improvisation and playing from chord charts. Fun and effective, my approach will help you learn quickly and enjoy the process!

About Eric

For almost 25 years, I've had the privilege to have worked with thousands of performers who study with me from all over the world. I teach in-studio at my two locations in Houston and in The Woodlands, Texas. I also work with students who come to me from all over the globe via online over-the-web Skype lessons.

Originally from Detroit, I enjoyed being a "Jack of all styles" singer/musician for over 15 years. I was a professional musician performing Classical, Jazz, Pop, Rock, Gospel, Musical Theater, Commercial and Studio work, along with being very involved in Contemporary Christian music.
While I very much loved to perform, I found myself drawn much more to the joy of teaching. Vocal instruction and improvisational piano teaching eventually became my passion, and so I've poured my time and energies into teaching singers and players to become, well… better musicians!

Eric has coached me for more than two years. Each lesson was personalized and has helped me to improve gradually. As I could download the recording of the lesson, I was able to practice between lessons. Eric has been very supportive and was very open to my unique music taste. I really feel comfortable now singing thanks to him.

Debbie T.

Houston, TX

I have had my own Piano Studio for both group piano classes and individual lessons with elementary age beginners, transfer students and adults. In the Public School settings, I have had access to keyboards to use as instruction in general music classes.

About Debbie

Having been a public school teacher, as well as a private and group piano instructor, I've observed how differently students "digest" information, and piano lessons are a great way to make use of different learning styles. I emphasize knowing HOW to practice before you leave so you'll be successful at home, and you are welcome to contact me with problems during the week so you don't lose a week in progressing with your lessons. I've had students send a video of a tricky section to ask for alternative fingering, and photos to clarify how they are reading something!! I also perform with an or
chestra and want to feel proficient among my peers, so I really know how it feels to make a mistake in front of everyone. I am here to help you feel proud of your progress.
My primary teaching objective is to have fun as I assist you on this wonderful journey into music!

*** Lesson Details ***
I truly have fun making and teaching music. We celebrate all successes. Even the overcoming of the smallest "hiccups"!
There are games to make my students secure with the many concepts of music reading. I encourage improvisation and ensemble playing. We can add rhythm tracks to "jazz" up our scales and finger builders. Students can accompany with chords or melodic harmonies. I assign exercises to build finger flexibility, strength, fluidity and independence; Pencil work to master theory and reading skills; Pieces that contain the ideas we are focused upon; and pieces to add to your repertoire.

*** Studio Equipment ***
At my Home Studio,You will be playing on my 5'1" Knabe grand piano! I also have electronic keyboards. On occasion you may find yourself playing on my marimba - a definite pitch percussion instrument - like a giant xylophone. We often rehearse our rhythms on my variety of world drums! There are chairs available for guests.
Also, I share my home with my pet cats - so if you are allergic, I'd be happy to consider coming to your home for your lessons.

*** Travel Equipment ***
An electronic keyboard with full-sized keys or a tuned piano must be available along with a proper height stool, bench or chair. A music stand for the books and good lighting is also needed. The family must agree that the 'lesson space' deserves to be quiet with no distractions. I can also bring one of my keyboards to use for duets, accompanying and improvising. Should there be another student (or potential student) in the home, they can use the extra keyboard with headphones for guided practice and creativity. Percussion students - primarily- mallets, would be better served at my home using my marimba. However, those who have bell kits could be taught in their home, with the possibility of using my marimba as an incentive.

*** Specialties ***
I am fortunate to have an extensive collection of piano method books and solos that I make available as part of my lending library. From it I can reinforce a concept or reward an accomplishment with an "oldie, but goodie" from John Thompson or Schaum, without having to charge the parents for another piece. For my beginning piano students of elementary school age, I have used the Robert Pace, Bastien, Faber & Faber and Schaum series. With adults, I invite them into the decision depending on what their experience is and what they would like to be able to perform one year from now. With transfer students, I have asked them to play their favorites from the lesson books they own, (and I ask them to evaluate their proficiency)- then we discuss where to go from there. Often it is positive to stay at the same level but use different literature so they can become comfortable with my style of explanations and expectations. This encourages a relationship where the student feels like they do know what they were taught and 'cements' those skills as a foundation for our moving forward together. I have a CD player handy for the books that include recorded tracks to go along with a learned piece.

I started taking piano lessons from Debbie three months ago. I have some previous experience as a violinist, but none with piano. With her guidance, I've gotten so much farther than I would have on my own! She's a professional music teacher, and it shows - she regularly gives me tips to improve musicality of a piece, or background on the composer. She's easygoing but always encourages you to try to go further. So glad to be learning from Debbie!

My son is 7 and this is his first time learning piano. We have been searching for the best piano teacher that works well with children. From reading many excellent reviews, we gave Ms. Debbie a try. And we are so glad that we have made the right choice. My son has been with Ms. Debbie for 2 months and I can see that he starts to like piano now. Ms. Debbie is very patient with my boy and always make it fun and interesting for him at every lesson. Thank you so much, Ms. Debbie.

Jennifer G.

Spring, TX

Twenty four years of experience working with students of all levels and ages has shaped me into the teacher I am today. Although I do tailor my sessions to suit the individual student, here are some expectations you can have of me.
Beginning students up to age 11 typically begin with the Bastien method. This curriculum is great at introducing interval recognition. I supplement this with fun pieces from Alfred, where students can strengthen sight reading skills. Flashcards are also used as reinforcement.
Older kids and adults will begin with Alfred's adult course and progress quickly into independent playing.

For all ages - After the student has reached a level of more independent playing, the student/parent will help select the direction in which we progress.Classical music, composition, and popular music are just a few of the possibilities!

All lesson books and materials are provided by me and are included in the cost of lessons. Students are welcome to provide additional ...

About Jennifer

I have been teaching piano to students of all ages since 1992, both to individual students and groups. I taught with the Music Learning Center of Michigan. I have been a music teacher and choir director for a number of years as well. For eight years I have played the organ and piano for Church worship.

*** Lesson Details ***
Music should be appreciated and enjoyed. Lessons should be fun without sacrificing quality. This is the approach I offer to students. I focus on teaching independence through music theory and sight reading. Performance is an important part of learning so I provide two
recitals every year- one for Christmas and another in the spring, at the end of the school year.
My schedule only allows for weekly lessons. Requests for every other week cannot be accepted.
*** Studio Equipment ***
Separate room dedicated to teaching with upright piano.

Leni B.

Magnolia, TX

The object is to learn to plat the piano with total control and a beautiful sound.

About Leni

BA in Music, composition and conducting from Hunter College (City University of New York)
Diploma from the Conservatoire de Fontainebleau, France
Studied with Louise Talma, Jacques Louis Monod, Nadia Boulanger

Lessons are about learning to make music, not endless scales and arpeggios which so often lead to pain and injury. Tone production, sight reading, and age appropriate theory and interpretation are strong elements from the beginning.

An overwhelming percentage of young, enthusiastic and talented children are discouraged early and give up the piano because they do not make rapid p
rogress and therefore do not enjoy their lessons. Music is one of life's great joys. It should be fun. For the intermediate, and even the advanced, student, it is critical that much more attention be paid to the musicality of the playing and the understanding of the music. This leads to more beautiful playing and greater enjoyment.

Lessons are designed for the needs of the individual student.

*** Studio Equipment ***

After being away from the piano for years, not to mention piano lessons, I learned a great deal in my first lesson with Leni. He teaches a fundamental technique new to me so I am looking forward to my next lesson.

Leni is very patient with me and he takes much of his own time seeing to it that I know the correct hand movements to play the piano properly. I sincerely appreciate all that he does to make me into a "maestro" in the long term!

Leni is an inspiration of how one should approach teaching music. He avoids common issues that discourage others from learning. Leni doesn't drill you through endless exercises, or force you to play pieces such as "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" for months at a time. Rather, he will teach you simpler, but still beautiful, pieces that teach you the fundamentals more effectively than endless drills. I was somewhat nervous because I have arthritis in my hands, but the non-injurious technique that Leni teaches is intended to be as soft on the hands as possible, and not utilize the fingers, which will cause fatigue and injury.

Leni also has a very clear concept of student potential, and will introduce things to you that seem mind-boggling, but by the end of the lesson, you will have accomplished things you couldn't have imagined possible. He does not stick to an ironclad curriculum that he has developed, and will design a plan based on each individual student. His flexibility, faith in his students, realistic approach, and teaching abilities will help you progress rapidly.

Our lessons will get the fingers moving where you want them to, and we'll learn theory at the same time so that you know why you're doing what you're doing.

About Rick

I have been a performer, accompanist, teacher, composer, and arranger for most of my life. I also have been on several recordings and have several self-produced CDs. I look on teaching lessons as a means to pass on the joy of music. It's work. But the pay-off is worth it! I will be teaching out of my home studio as well as available for teaching in your home.

All I ask is that you be serious about learning and be thinking of the long term. Give me your time, I'll give you a great introduction into the world of music!
